POSITION SUMMARY

The Capital Equipment (Cap/EX) Technician is responsible for installing commercial refrigeration and HVAC systems, as well as troubleshooting capabilities on refrigeration racks, cases, HVAC, and control systems. This includes working with a wide range of mechanical, electrical, and control systems. Your primarily position is to work with the CapEx team to deliver excellent installation/service to achieve 100% equipment operation per scope of work. When additional resources are needed in the other areas of the business you may be called upon to assist. The role requires technical expertise, problem-solving skills, and a proactive approach to minimize equipment downtime and improve system performance.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Installation & Commissioning:

  • Survey stores and write up scopes of work/repairs needed on existing Refrigeration/HVAC/Control Systems.

  • Install new capital equipment and machinery in accordance with manufacturer specifications, ensuring proper setup and calibration.

  • Ensure completion of Punchlist to maximize system performance

  • Assist in the commissioning of new equipment to ensure it meets operational requirements and industry standards.

  • Collaborate with Technicians, Leadership, Vendors, and other contractors to effect optimal project delivery on all projects.

Maintenance & Repair:

  • Perform preventive maintenance on capital equipment when replacing components to ensure it operates at peak efficiency and minimizes downtime.

  • Support RHVAC Technicians, when needed, in stores while performing Capex work.

Equipment Troubleshooting:

  • Use diagnostic tools and software to identify issues and troubleshoot complex mechanical, electrical, or control system failures.

  • Develop and implement corrective actions to fix equipment issues and prevent future breakdowns.

Optimization & Upgrades:

  • Recommend and implement system upgrades and improvements to enhance equipment performance, reliability, and energy efficiency.

  • Collaborate with engineers to design and implement modifications to existing systems as needed.

Safety & Compliance:

  • Follow all safety procedures and regulations when handling refrigerants, operating electrical systems, and working with pressurized equipment.

  • Ensure that all capital equipment is maintained in compliance with safety standards and regulations, including OSHA, ANSI, and other industry-specific guidelines.

  • Follow lockout/tagout (LOTO) and other safety procedures when working on equipment to prevent accidents and injuries.

  • Complete safety training provided by company.

Documentation & Reporting:

  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, repairs, inspections, and equipment performance data in computerized maintenance management system.

  • Document equipment issues and provide detailed reports to management regarding the status of repairs and maintenance.

Collaboration & Training:

  • Work closely with engineers, operators, and other maintenance staff to ensure proper operation and troubleshooting of capital equipment.

  • Train and assist Technicians and Apprentices in the proper use and maintenance of equipment.

Inventory Management:

  • Monitor spare parts inventory and order necessary parts to ensure availability when needed for repairs and maintenance.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Valid driver's license

  • Ability to pass preemployment DMV check, drug screening, and background check

  • Refrigeration license as required by applicable state regulations

  • EPA Certification

  • OSHA 10Hour certification (or ability to obtain within 30 days)

  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • Completion of an apprenticeship or formal RHVAC training program

  • Authorized to work in the United States (no company sponsorship)

  • English proficiency (read, write, speak)

  • Ability to read and understand building drawings, specifications, and submittals

  • Experience in the supermarket or grocery industry (preferred)

  • Willingness to travel: daily travel within a 100mile radius; occasional travel (5-10%) within a 200mile radius with potential overnight stays (subject to business needs)

SKILLS/COMPETENCIES

  • Background in refrigeration, HVAC, controls, and/or electrical (desired)

  • Strong knowledge of refrigeration, HVAC, and EMS construction principles

  • Knowledge of controls systems and control sequences

  • Ability to generate accurate, detailed notes and reports

  • Proficient computer skills (Outlook, Word, Excel)

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with owners and contractors

  • Ability to lead project meetings

  • Independent, selfstarter

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to lift heavy equipment and materials (up to 50 lbs or more).

  • Ability to work in confined spaces, at heights, and in environments that may require protective equipment (e.g., gloves, hard hats, safety glasses).

  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks such as climbing, standing, bending, and crouching for extended periods while working on equipment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Field-based, working on customer sites.

  • May require work in noisy, hot, or dusty environments.

  • Overtime or weekend work may be required depending on equipment needs and urgency of repairs.

  • Ability to store company issued vehicle preferred.
