What is sign fabrication?

Sign fabrication is the process of designing, manufacturing, and assembling signs for businesses, organizations, or public spaces. This involves working with various materials like metal, plastic, vinyl, and glass to create custom signs that meet clients' specifications. Sign fabricators use tools and techniques such as cutting, welding, painting, and electrical wiring to produce both indoor and outdoor signage. The process may also include installation and maintenance services. Sign fabrication plays a crucial role in branding, advertising, and providing wayfinding information.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in sign fabrication?

To thrive in Sign Fabrication, you need skills in measuring, cutting, assembling, and finishing materials, often supported by a high school diploma or technical training. Familiarity with tools such as CNC routers, vinyl cutters, digital printers, and design software like Adobe Illustrator or CorelDRAW is typically required. Attention to detail, creativity, and effective communication help professionals exceed client expectations and collaborate with team members. These skills ensure that signs are produced accurately, efficiently, and to high-quality standards, meeting both client needs and safety regulations.

What are some common challenges faced in sign fabrication, and how can new employees prepare for them?

Sign fabrication often involves working with a variety of materials and tools, requiring precision and attention to detail. New employees may initially find it challenging to interpret design specifications accurately and operate specialized machinery safely. To prepare, it's helpful to familiarize yourself with basic fabrication techniques, safety protocols, and to seek hands-on training during onboarding. Collaboration with more experienced team members and asking questions will also accelerate your learning and help you adapt quickly to the fast-paced, project-driven environment.

Job description

Commercial architectural graphics and signage

We are a Bay Area signage manufacturing and installation company with over 30 years in the industry. We work on commercial, retail, and construction projects across the region — from tenant signage to large-scale exterior installations.
Custom sign fabrication studio seeks dependable, precision-focused fabricator to help run our heavy shop production floor. This is a shop-based role for someone who takes pride in dead-accurate work and works safely without being told.
Skills the ideal person will possess — ability to work under pressure, ability to multi-task, mechanically inclined, sharp eye for detail, prefers organization and efficiency, excels in a close-knit workspace. Precision of 1/16" is required and must hold consistently. Corrections stick the first time.
Main daily tasks include utilizing table saw, router, sander, and cutting machinery; learning our sign standard paint system and all processes for preparing and painting sign materials; fabrication of signage on wood, aluminum, acrylic, and composite substrates; cutting, forming, and assembly work with chemical adhesive bonding (no torch welding); reading and working from shop drawings independently; processing deliveries; keeping the shop clean, organized, and safe. May also help with field installations on larger projects.
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
- 3+ years hands-on experience in woodwork, carpentry, cabinet shop, sign shop, or comparable precision shop environment
- Ability to multitask, work independently, prioritize, and collaborate within a small team of seasoned professionals
- Attention to detail and a desire to produce nothing but the highest quality product, with precise measurement
- Strong shop safety habits — proper PPE, machine guarding, safe material handling, situational awareness around others
- Strong communication skills — ability to interact clearly with the project team
- Willingness to learn our systems, materials, and standards
NICE TO HAVE:
- Sign industry, cabinetry, or finish carpentry background
- CNC router experience
- Painting and finishing background
- Basic computer skills
