Job description

General Summary

The Material Coordinator typically works in a warehouse environment and is responsible for tracking inventory levels, handling all aspects of shipping and receiving, and keeping accurate records. On the shipping side, they package items, print labels, weigh packages, and determine appropriate postage. As receiving clerks, they are responsible for comparing bills of lading against actual merchandise received, inspecting for damaged goods, and, once approved, distributing merchandise to the correct locations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Determines the method of shipment and prepares bills, invoices, and other shipping documents
  • Receives merchandise - checks and signs delivery slips, and assists with unloading as necessary
  • Inspects and verifies incoming goods against invoices or other documents, records shortages, and rejects damaged goods or hazardous goods
  • Accepts or returns merchandise according to established company procedures
  • Calculates prices according to guidelines and affixes bar codes, prices, and security tags as necessary
  • Organizes distribution and shipping of goods or hazardous goods
  • Makes necessary verifications against documents, unpacks and routes goods or chemicals to appropriate storage areas
  • Handles customer pick-up and delivers goods and hazardous goods
  • May operate a forklift, hand truck, or other equipment to load, unload, transport, and store goods and hazardous goods
  • Maintains internal record-keeping systems
  • Contacts resource people for various information
  • Contacts transport companies and suppliers in order to expedite, trace or return merchandise that does not conform to specifications or purchase orders
  • Assembles containers and crates, packs goods to be shipped, and prepares to identify information and shipping instructions
  • Takes inventory, maintains storage area, organizes, and places stock on shelves
  • Exam all storage and warehouse facilities for deterioration, damage, or conditions that put goods and hazardous goods in risk
  • Ensures area is secure at all times
  • Pick up supplies as required

Knowledge, Experience and Skill Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • At least two years of related experience required
  • Knows safe storage and handling procedures for various chemicals and materials
  • Knows proper shipping procedures for transportation of dangerous goods
  • Forklift operations preferred
  • Proficient written and oral communication skills according to skill requirements
  • Possess strong computer skills, able to read, write, and comprehend written instructional documents
  • Ability to function well in a high-paced and at times stressful environment
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume
  • Proficient Microsoft Office productivity suite preferred
  • Must be able to successfully pass as required a federal, state, or local government's background investigation
  • Valid motor vehicle operators license
  • Forklift certification preferred
  • 40-Hourur Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) preferred

Work Environment

  • Prolonged period of standing, bending, reaching, and working with hands
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • Occasional periods of prolonged exposure to loud noises
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds at times
  • Ability to stand, walk, and reach with arms and hands as necessary
