What is a SiC power engineer?

SiC Power Engineers are specialists who design, develop, and optimize electronic systems that use silicon carbide (SiC) semiconductors for power conversion and management. These professionals work on creating highly efficient power electronic devices, such as inverters, converters, and power modules, utilizing the superior properties of SiC materials, like high thermal conductivity and voltage resistance. Their expertise is crucial in industries such as electric vehicles, renewable energy, and industrial automation, where efficient power handling is essential. SiC Power Engineers often collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure the integration and reliability of SiC-based solutions.

What are some common challenges faced by SiC power engineers when integrating silicon carbide technology into existing power systems?

SiC Power Engineers often encounter challenges when integrating silicon carbide (SiC) devices into established power systems, primarily due to differences in electrical characteristics compared to traditional silicon components. These challenges include managing higher switching speeds, optimizing thermal management, and ensuring compatibility with existing circuitry and control methods. Additionally, engineers must stay updated on evolving industry standards and reliability testing to maximize the benefits of SiC technology. Collaborating closely with design, testing, and manufacturing teams is crucial to address these integration hurdles efficiently.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a SiC power engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a SiC Power Engineer, you need a strong background in electrical engineering, with expertise in power electronics, semiconductor device physics, and silicon carbide (SiC) technology, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with simulation tools (like SPICE), PCB design software, and knowledge of industry standards and SiC device characterization techniques is essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills set outstanding engineers apart in this field. These skills enable the design and optimization of high-performance, reliable SiC-based power systems that meet industry demands for efficiency and innovation.

What is the difference between Sic Power Engineer vs Electric Power Engineer?

AspectSic Power EngineerElectric Power Engineer

At Raytheon, the foundation of everything we do is rooted in our values and a higher calling – to help our nation and allies defend freedoms and deter aggression. We bring the strength of more than 100 years of experience and renowned engineering expertise to meet the needs of today’s mission and stay ahead of tomorrow’s threat. Our team solves tough, meaningful problems that create a safer, more secure world.

Raytheon's Effector Analog & Power (EAP) Department is looking for junior to mid-level engineers who have power electronics knowledge to help design robust power systems.

The EAP Department is responsible for the development, from concept to integration, of Telemetry and Flight Termination products; power systems from all up round to the lowest level power regulation; servo electronics supporting all mechanical motion in our products and low noise mixed signal electronics that provides the analog to digital interface to our front-end sensors. Each of these products generally operate in lower power and voltage ranges less than 10kW and 1000V.

What You Will Do:

  • Design, analyze, simulate, test, and document power conversion (and related analog) circuitry. This circuitry will dominantly involve non-isolated and isolated switch mode power converters and linear converters. Main emphasis is on board-mounted power end use applications.

  • Help to see circuit card development through its design phases, from requirements definition through initial integration testing.

  • Test and validate circuit card designs by developing test procedures, performing data capture, and analyzing results to confirm adherence to project requirements.

  • Guide ECAD drafters through layout and routing activities, with moderate support from senior engineers. Assist in layer stackup definition.

Qualifications You Must Have:

  • Masters degree in Electrical engineering or related science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) is required

  • Design, analysis, test, and/or simulation experience with one or more of the following non-isolated converter topologies: buck, boost, buck-boost.

  • Experience using tools such as MATLAB, MathCAD, Mathematica, or other similar tools.

  • Experience with analog electronics design, including at least one of the following: FETs/BJTs, op-amp, high/low/band pass filters, clock/data termination, and comparator circuits.

  • The ability to obtain and maintain a US security clearance is required. U.S. citizenship is required as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance.

Qualifications We Prefer:

  • An advanced degree in Electrical Engineering

  • A self-starter, a quick learner, be able to function in a dynamic environment, and have good time management skills. Should have an appreciation for how successful teams are structured.

  • Experience communicating and documenting technical topics at the small team level.

  • Experience in any one of the following:

  • Familiarity with wide bandgap devices (SiC, GaN) in power electronics designs.

  • Simulators such as SIMPLIS or SABER, or Mentor Graphics DxDesigner, and/or Hyperlynx.

  • Acting as a liaison between program and functional management in a cross-matrixed organization.

  • Military specifications.

  • Design considerations for voltages > 400V and/or power > 10kW. Three-phase power systems, power factor control, and inverter/rectifier development.

  • Program management tools such as Earned Value.
