Shuttle Van Driver/Bus Monitor

Rochambeau, The French International School of Washington, DC (Rochambeau), has an opening for a Shuttle Van Driver/Bus Monitor – Part-time for the 2026-2027 school year. This position starts August 17, 2026.

Location: Bethesda, MD Reports to: Director of Transportation Job Type: Part-time, split shift, hourly, non-exempt Salary Information: $20.00 per hour (or $1.00 differential, if current pay is higher) Benefits: This position is eligible for Montgomery County Sick & Safe Leave and is not eligible for additional benefits or paid time-off. However, Rochambeau determines benefit eligibility based on an employee's total scheduled hours across all workcenters. Employees who maintain a combined full-time schedule will remain eligible for medical benefits in accordance with school policy and applicable law.

Position Summary

The Shuttle Van Driver/Bus Monitor is a hybrid role responsible for the safe and orderly transportation of students to and from school and assigned destinations. This position requires a dual focus: effectively operating school vehicles in compliance with DOT and safety standards, and providing active supervision to manage student behavior and ensure passenger welfare. At any given time, you may be assigned to either the Shuttle Van Driver or the Bus Monitor position in accordance with business needs. The successful candidate will demonstrate a high degree of safety awareness, maintain punctual attendance, and support the core values and mission of Rochambeau.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Transportation & Vehicle Operations:

  • Provide daily transportation for passengers, safely and efficiently loading and unloading all passengers at designated stops.
  • Conduct required pre- and post-trip vehicle inspections to ensure proper operating conditions and adherence to school and DOT standards.
  • Maintain accurate pre- and post-trip logbooks and student ridership lists.
  • Comply with all State driving regulations and established school transportation procedures.
  • Maintain the vehicle's interior in a clean, neat, and safe operating condition.
  • Promptly report all accidents, incidents, traffic violations, or maintenance needs to management.

Student Supervision & Safety:

  • Actively monitor student behavior during transit to ensure safety and prevent the use of unsafe objects.
  • Effectively manage student conduct by de-escalating unruly situations and enforcing bus rules to foster a positive atmosphere.
  • Ensure students are only released to authorized adults; follow departmental notification policies for any unreceived students.
  • Facilitate Emergency Evacuation procedures and act promptly in the event of an accident or emergency to ensure student well-being.
  • Use a two-way radio to interact and communicate professionally with the transportation officer and supervisors.
  • Utilize iPads for accurate and timely student registration and disciplinary documentation.
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Must be 25 years of age or older, with a minimum of 5 years of driving experience.
  • Possess a valid U.S. driver's license (Class C or higher).
  • Clean driving record: no moving violations in 3 years; no DUIs, suspended licenses, or major violations in 5 years.
  • Proficient in using technology, specifically iPads, for student registration and other tasks.
  • Strong English verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and a service-oriented approach.
  • Ability to interact and communicate respectfully and effectively with students and staff members in a cooperative manner.
  • Availability to work a split shift, typically starting at 6:00 AM and concluding between 6:30 PM and 7:30 PM, with punctual and regular attendance.
  • Ability to interact with children and successfully clear a background check, including a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and security of information.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to Rochambeau's vision, mission, values, and strategic aims.
  • Three Professional References (name, position, contact number, and email) listed on your CV/resume.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma/GED (or equivalent).
  • Bilingual French/English language desired.
  • Experience in a private, international, or school setting is a plus.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This position primarily operates in school, outdoor, and in-transit environments. Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs independently, work in all weather conditions, including rain, snow, heat, cold, etc, and maintain physical mobility, including extended sitting, walking, standing, twisting, and stair climbing.
