As of Jun 28, 2026, the average hourly pay for shunt driver in the United States is $16.29, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $14.42 and $17.31 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What company in Texas is paying truckers $14000 a week?

Shunt drivers and other truck driving roles can sometimes earn high weekly pay through specialized routes, overtime, or bonuses, but earning $14,000 a week is uncommon and typically associated with owner-operator positions or highly experienced drivers in specialized freight. Most standard trucking jobs offer lower weekly earnings, and such high pay may involve additional factors like incentives or contract work.

What are shunt drivers?

Shunt drivers are professional drivers responsible for moving trailers and containers within a confined area, such as a warehouse yard, distribution center, or port terminal. They use specialized vehicles, often called shunt trucks or yard tractors, to reposition trailers for loading, unloading, or staging. Unlike long-haul truck drivers, shunt drivers typically do not drive on public roads and focus on efficient trailer management within the facility. Their role is essential for maintaining smooth logistics operations and minimizing delays in cargo handling. Shunt drivers must have strong spatial awareness, attention to safety, and may require specific training or certifications depending on the employer and location.

What does a shunt driver do?

A shunt driver operates specialized railway vehicles to move and position railcars within yards or industrial facilities. They use remote controls or cab controls to precisely couple, uncouple, and organize railcars, ensuring efficient train assembly and disassembly. This role requires knowledge of safety procedures and often involves working in a yard environment with various equipment.

What is the highest paid truck driver job?

The highest paid truck driver jobs typically include specialized roles such as hazardous materials (hazmat) drivers, oversize load drivers, and those working in long-haul or team driving positions. These roles often require additional certifications, experience, and the ability to handle complex or oversized loads, leading to higher compensation compared to standard trucking jobs.

What is the difference between Shunt Driver vs Yard Driver?

AspectShunt DriverYard Driver
CredentialsDriver's license, possibly forklift or yard certificationsDriver's license, yard safety certifications
Work EnvironmentRail yards, freight terminals, industrial sitesYard areas, warehouses, freight terminals
Employer & IndustryRail companies, freight operatorsLogistics companies, warehouses
Job FocusMoving rail cars within yardsMoving trucks or containers within yards

Shunt Drivers primarily operate in rail yards, focusing on moving rail cars, while Yard Drivers handle trucks and containers within yard environments. Both roles require similar licenses and safety certifications, but their work environments and specific tasks differ.

What jobs pay 2000 a day?

Shunt drivers typically do not earn $2,000 a day; such high daily earnings are usually associated with specialized roles like executive consultants, high-level traders, or certain medical professionals. Most jobs with high daily pay require advanced skills, certifications, or significant experience, and earnings can vary widely based on industry and location.

What are some common challenges faced by Shunt Drivers, and how can they be managed effectively?

Shunt Drivers often encounter challenges such as navigating tight spaces in busy yard environments, managing tight schedules, and maintaining effective communication with warehouse and logistics teams. To manage these challenges, it is important to stay alert, practice safe driving techniques, and use radio or digital systems to coordinate movements with other team members. Continuous learning about site layouts and regular safety training can also help improve efficiency and reduce risks on the job.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Shunt Driver, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Shunt Driver, you need a valid commercial driver’s license (often a CDL), knowledge of safe trailer maneuvering, and experience operating heavy vehicles in yard environments. Familiarity with yard management systems, vehicle inspection protocols, and sometimes forklift operation or tachograph use is important. Attention to detail, situational awareness, and strong communication skills help ensure smooth coordination with warehouse and logistics teams. These skills are crucial for maintaining safety, minimizing downtime, and ensuring efficient movement of trailers within logistics hubs.
