What are Shopify Developers?

Shopify Developers are specialized web developers who design, build, and maintain e-commerce stores using the Shopify platform. They customize themes, integrate third-party apps, and implement features to enhance the online shopping experience. Their work ensures that Shopify stores are visually appealing, functional, and optimized for sales. Shopify Developers also help with troubleshooting, site migrations, and performance improvements.

What do Shopify devs do?

Shopify developers build and customize online stores using Shopify's platform, including designing themes, developing custom features, and integrating apps. They often work with Liquid, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to enhance store functionality and user experience, and may also troubleshoot issues and optimize site performance.

Is Shopify developer in demand?

Shopify developers are in high demand due to the growth of e-commerce and the popularity of Shopify as a platform. Skills in Shopify theme customization, app integration, and proficiency with Liquid, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript increase employability in this field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Shopify Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Shopify Developer, you need expertise in web development with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Liquid, along with a solid understanding of e-commerce best practices. Familiarity with the Shopify platform, API integrations, version control systems like Git, and often certification as a Shopify Partner are highly valuable. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication skills set top candidates apart. These skills are crucial for building high-performing, user-friendly online stores that meet client needs and drive business growth.

Do Shopify developers need coding?

Shopify developers typically need coding skills, especially in languages like Liquid, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, to customize and build themes and functionalities. While some tasks can be done through the Shopify admin interface, coding knowledge is essential for advanced customization and development work.

Will AI replace Shopify developers?

Shopify developers design and customize online stores using tools like Liquid, HTML, and JavaScript. While AI can automate some repetitive tasks and assist with coding, it is unlikely to fully replace the need for skilled developers who understand business needs, user experience, and complex integrations. Human expertise remains essential for creating tailored, high-quality e-commerce solutions.

What is the difference between Shopify Developer vs Shopify Front-End Developer?

AspectShopify DeveloperShopify Front-End Developer
Primary FocusDeveloping and customizing Shopify stores, backend integrations, app developmentDesigning and implementing the visual and interactive elements of Shopify stores
Skills RequiredLiquid templating, Shopify APIs, backend coding, app integrationHTML, CSS, JavaScript, UI/UX design, theme customization
Work EnvironmentCollaborates with designers, developers, and clients on store setup and functionalityWorks closely with designers and clients on visual design and user experience

While both roles work within the Shopify ecosystem, a Shopify Developer handles broader store functionalities, including backend and app integrations, whereas a Shopify Front-End Developer focuses on the visual design and user interface. Understanding these differences helps businesses hire the right specialist for their needs.

How does a Shopify Developer typically collaborate with designers and marketers within an e-commerce team?

Shopify Developers work closely with designers to ensure that site layouts, themes, and user interfaces align with the brand's aesthetic and provide an optimal user experience. They also partner with marketers to implement tracking tools, promotional banners, and other conversion-focused features. Clear communication and frequent check-ins are common, as updates to product pages or campaigns often require quick technical adjustments. This collaborative environment helps ensure seamless site performance and effective digital marketing efforts.

Job description

AI-Native Growth MarketerAbout the Role

This is a new kind of marketing role. Youโ€™ll use AI tools as your primary production method and bring strategic judgment, brand sensibility, and analytical rigor that AI canโ€™t. Youโ€™ll own the daily output engine for email, blog/SEO, and ad creative while building the analytics and optimization infrastructure that makes every marketing dollar work harder.

Key Responsibilities

Content & Campaign Execution

  • Write and publish SEO/AIEO-optimized blog posts and recipe pages, applying editorial judgment for persona targeting, brand voice, product accuracy, and search optimization.
  • Build and send email campaigns, and manage lifecycle flow builds.
  • Produce ad creative, social assets, and promotional graphics using AI-assisted design tools.
  • Build and maintain the AI creative workflow system, including measurement and ongoing optimization.
  • Execute the full-year campaign calendar with persona-segmented content across email, blog, social, and advertising.
  • Collaborate with the Creative Manager on brand consistency, with our photographer/videographer on content integration, and social media and earned media channel owners.

Analytics, Tech Stack & Optimization

  • Own the Shopify app stack: audit, configure, and optimize plugins. Cut what doesnโ€™t perform. Implement whatโ€™s missing.
  • Build and maintain marketing analytics infrastructure and drive conversion rate optimization.
  • Manage SEO/AIEO technical execution through our shared IT team.
  • Support Amazon analytics and reporting in partnership with our Amazon vendor.

Qualifications

Required

  • 3+ years in content marketing, growth marketing, or a hybrid digital marketing role.
  • Demonstrated AI tool proficiency and genuine passion for AI-enabled content and workflow development.
  • Strong writing and editing skills with the ability to adapt tone across different customer personas.
  • Proficiency in at least one email platform (Klaviyo strongly preferred) including campaign builds, flow architecture, and segmentation.
  • Working knowledge of Shopify Plus (or comparable e-commerce platform) including app management and basic analytics.
  • Comfort with data: you can build dashboards, interpret trends, and turn analytics into action.
  • Design sensibility - understanding of layout, typography, color, and visual hierarchy - with working proficiency in Canva or comparable tools.
  • Self-directed with strong project management instincts; you can own an editorial calendar, production queue, and tech stack without daily supervision.

Preferred

  • Experience building and optimizing Klaviyo flows and automated email sequences.
  • Familiarity with Shopify app ecosystem, Liquid theme basics, and CRO tools.
  • Experience with SEO/AIEO content strategy and technical SEO fundamentals (schema, site speed, search console).
  • Exposure to prompt engineering, AI workflow building, or automation tools.
  • Experience in food, CPG, or specialty e-commerce.

This role is 5 days a week onsite at our Richfield, WI facility.
