What is Shopify design?

Shopify design refers to the process of creating and customizing the visual appearance and user experience of an online store using Shopify’s platform. This includes choosing or creating a theme, adjusting layouts, colors, fonts, and adding visual elements that reflect a brand’s identity. A well-designed Shopify store not only looks appealing but also optimizes navigation and conversion rates for customers. Shopify designers use built-in tools, as well as custom code (HTML, CSS, Liquid), to achieve unique and functional store designs. Effective Shopify design can help businesses stand out and improve their online sales.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Shopify designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Shopify Designer, you need a solid understanding of web design principles, proficiency in HTML/CSS, and experience with Shopify’s Liquid templating language. Familiarity with design tools like Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, and Shopify’s theme editor is essential, along with knowledge of e-commerce best practices. Strong communication, creativity, and problem-solving skills help designers translate client needs into effective, visually appealing online stores. These skills are crucial for creating user-friendly, high-converting Shopify sites that drive business growth and client satisfaction.

What are some common challenges faced when designing a Shopify store, and how can I overcome them?

A common challenge in Shopify design is balancing aesthetic appeal with seamless functionality, especially when customizing themes or integrating third-party apps. Designers often need to ensure that the store is visually engaging while maintaining fast load times and mobile responsiveness. Collaborating closely with developers and store owners is essential for aligning design choices with brand identity and business goals. Staying updated with the latest Shopify updates and best practices helps address technical limitations and deliver a smooth user experience.

Website Manager - Shopify Plus

Gratz Pilates

Job description

Website Manager - Shopify Plus
About Us
Gratz Pilates stands as a cornerstone in the world of Pilates, with a rich history spanning back to the 1960s. Renowned for our commitment to premier manufacturing, we have been steadfast in upholding the legacy and integrity of Joseph Pilates' original designs. Our dedication to craftsmanship, authenticity, and precision has earned us a distinguished reputation within the Pilates community. We take pride in delivering exceptional products that empower practitioners worldwide in their pursuit of physical well-being and strength. Join us at Gratz Pilates and be a part of our legacy of excellence.
About the Role
We're looking for a hands-on Website Manager to own the Shopify Plus ecosystem behind GratzPilates.com; theme code, product data, apps, shipping, checkout, and every system they connect to. You're the internal expert on how it all works, able to explain tradeoffs to non-technical peers and build creative solutions when there's no off-the-shelf fix.
You'll work closely with product management, product marketing, social marketing, customer service, and global services, since the website touches all of them, but technical ownership is yours alone.
Gratz's Shopify setup is deeply interconnected: product data, templates, apps, shipping, taxes, checkout, and reporting all affect each other. A quick fix that ignores those dependencies can resurface as a customer service, fulfillment, tax, or reporting problem. We need someone who builds scalable foundations by default and tests thoroughly before calling something done - not just someone who moves fast.
This is about building the website out further to serve our growing customer base and revenue, not a rebuild.
This is a fit for someone self-driven and technically sharp, who sees a fix or opportunity and builds it, and enjoys playing on a team driving growth and success.
Key Responsibilities
Site build & troubleshooting (core focus)
  • Build and publish new pages, landing pages, and site updates quickly and independently within our existing Shopify Liquid theme - turning ideas into reality across the entire site from content to commerce.
  • Build reusable templates and content structures (e.g., studio directory, blog, events page, maintenance provider page) so non-technical colleagues can add and update content themselves without needing you for every change.
  • Read and work within the existing codebase and related API/app connections; make careful, reliable edits; troubleshoot methodically; and recognize when something needs deeper development support.
  • Evaluate, install, configure, and troubleshoot third-party Shopify apps and integrations, knowing when a plugin is the right call vs. custom-coding a solution.
  • Use AI tools to speed up repetitive or labor-intensive work, freeing up time for strategy, QA, and higher-value development - without letting AI substitute for real technical understanding.

Scalable systems & product structure
  • Design product data structures (e.g., SKU architecture), templates, apps, and shipping/checkout rules with the full Shopify flow in mind, not just the immediate request.
  • Anticipate how a given change could affect customer service, fulfillment, tax, or reporting downstream, and build accordingly.

Customer Account, Checkout, Shipping
  • Troubleshoot checkout-related issues in partnership with
    Ops and Finance,
    and
know when a problem needs custom app development vs. a configuration fix.
  • Own the transition to Shopify's new customer accounts ahead of the legacy sunset, assessing what custom development or IT/agency support it requires.
  • Maintain and evolve shipping tables, rules, international requirements, and exceptions as complexity grows, anticipating edge cases rather than patching issues as they appear.
  • Work confidently within our PHP-based shipping app, including its more advanced configuration beyond the built-in wizard.

Web Optimization
  • Own SEO and GEO (generative engine optimization) implementation on-site - page structure, keyword-aware content, internal linking, metadata, image optimization, schema, and performance - working closely with our SEO/GEO/SEM agency, who guide strategy and content direction.
  • Apply strong conversion-minded UX judgment to reduce friction across product pages, collections, cart, and checkout, drive improvements in conversion rates.
  • Bring strong visual design and brand judgment, especially for landing and collection pages, balancing functionality, search visibility, and polish.

Collaboration
  • Serve as the go-to expert on how our Shopify ecosystem works for product, customer service, and other teams.
  • Flag downstream risk or friction before it becomes a problem, rather than after.
  • Translate technical tradeoffs into clear, non-technical terms for stakeholders.

Qualifications
Must-have
  • Bachelor's degree
  • 3-5 years of hands-on Shopify Plus development experience, including Liquid, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
  • Proven track record working independently within an existing codebase and third-party app ecosystem - not just Shopify's built-in settings.
  • Experience designing scalable product, template, or checkout structures with downstream dependencies in mind.
  • Solid SEO foundation, with curiosity about or experience in GEO/AI-search optimization.

Nice-to-have
  • Custom app development or API integration experience, especially around checkout or customer accounts.
  • Familiarity with PHP, particularly in the context of shipping or logistics apps.
