Job Title: HR Generalist (Contract)

Industry: Nonprofit

Location: Washington, DC (remote, with option to work onsite)

Assignment Type: Contract, leave coverage through early February

Pay: $25.00 - $29.00 / per hour

Work Schedule: Variable, generally 20 to 30 hours per week with heavier hours Monday through Wednesday during payroll cycles; standing hours 9am to 5pm; Fridays are typically light or off

About The Company:

Our client is a mission driven nonprofit organization in Washington, DC with a small, collaborative HR team supporting employees across multiple departments. This role sits within a two person HR function reporting directly to the head of Human Resources.

 Job Description:

This contract HR Generalist will step in to cover an upcoming leave and take ownership of payroll administration and employee facing HR communications.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Run payroll end to end for all departments across both semiweekly and salaried populations
  • Manage the full payroll intake process: reminders and notifications, timesheet collection, time clock review, data entry, and submission to the Shared Services Payroll Manager ahead of each deadline
  • Enter job changes, pay adjustments, separations, and other employee record updates within payroll deadlines and in line with internal procedure
  • Keep payroll documentation and standard operating procedures current
  • Maintain compliance with federal and District of Columbia wage and hour regulations
  • Build monthly reporting for development and finance stakeholders, plus ad hoc payroll reports as requested
  • Maintain back end payroll system coding to support grant reporting and other finance driven requirements
  • Complete employment verification requests
  • Protect the confidentiality and integrity of all employee records
  • Serve as the primary owner of the shared HR inbox, fielding and routing employee questions on HR and payroll matters and using response templates to keep turnaround fast and consistent

 Qualifications:

  • 4 or more years of HR Generalist experience
  • Hands on payroll processing experience; Paylocity proficiency is required and non-negotiable
  • Experience owning a shared HR inbox, triaging employee requests, and working from response templates
  • Strong Microsoft Office Suite skills
  • HR project management exposure is a plus; familiarity with Monday.com or Jira is welcome but not required
  • Background supporting an association or nonprofit
  • Sharp attention to detail, polished professionalism, and clear written and verbal communication
  • Degree preferred but not required
