Shopify Coder information

What are some common challenges faced by Shopify Coders when customizing online stores, and how can they be overcome?

Shopify Coders often encounter challenges such as integrating third-party apps, maintaining site performance while implementing custom features, and ensuring compatibility with Shopify's updates. To overcome these, it's important to follow Shopify's best practices for theme development, thoroughly test custom code in a development environment, and stay updated with the platform's API changes. Collaborating closely with designers, store owners, and the support team also helps address issues efficiently and ensures smooth project delivery.

What is the difference between Shopify Coder vs Shopify Developer?

AspectShopify CoderShopify Developer
CredentialsBasic knowledge of Shopify Liquid, HTML, CSS, JavaScriptIncludes Shopify Coder skills plus experience with app development, API integration
Work EnvironmentFreelance, small agencies, e-commerce storesAgencies, in-house teams, larger e-commerce projects
Industry UsageCustomizing themes, fixing bugs, minor modificationsBuilding custom apps, advanced theme development, integrations

Shopify Coders typically focus on theme customization and minor modifications using Liquid, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Shopify Developers have a broader skill set, including app development and API integrations, working on more complex projects. Both roles are essential in the Shopify ecosystem but differ in scope and technical depth.

Does Shopify allow coding?

Shopify allows coding through its Liquid templating language, which developers use to customize themes and storefronts. Shopify coders often work with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Liquid to modify store designs and functionalities. Knowledge of Shopify's API and app development can also be important for advanced customizations.

Will AI replace Shopify developers?

AI is unlikely to fully replace Shopify developers, as their role involves complex tasks like customizing themes, integrating apps, and troubleshooting that require human expertise. While AI tools can assist with coding and automation, skilled developers are needed to design, implement, and maintain tailored e-commerce solutions. Continuous learning of coding languages, Shopify APIs, and development best practices remains essential for the job.

Can you make 10k a month on Shopify?

A Shopify coder can potentially earn $10,000 a month by developing high-demand features, customizing themes, or optimizing stores for sales, especially if they have advanced skills and a strong portfolio. Achieving this income level often depends on experience, client base, project complexity, and the ability to deliver value through coding and technical support.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Shopify Coder, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Shopify Coder, you need proficiency in web development languages (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Liquid), a solid understanding of e-commerce principles, and experience with the Shopify platform. Familiarity with Shopify's theme development tools, APIs, and version control systems like Git is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication are essential soft skills that help you deliver customized solutions and collaborate with clients or teams. These competencies ensure seamless, high-quality Shopify store development that meets business goals and enhances user experience.

What is a Shopify Coder?

A Shopify Coder is a developer who specializes in creating, customizing, and maintaining online stores using the Shopify platform. They use programming languages like Liquid, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to build themes, add custom features, and integrate third-party apps. Shopify Coders help businesses enhance their e-commerce websites by optimizing the user experience and ensuring the store functions smoothly. Their expertise allows merchants to tailor their Shopify stores to meet specific business needs and branding requirements.

Is it hard to get hired at Shopify?

Getting hired as a Shopify coder can be competitive, requiring strong skills in Liquid, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, as well as experience with Shopify's platform and APIs. Candidates often need a solid portfolio or previous work experience, and familiarity with e-commerce concepts can improve chances. The hiring process typically involves technical assessments and interviews to evaluate coding ability and problem-solving skills.

Job description

Who we are
Vidably is building the evidence layer for commerce: verified buyer video, structured with AI, and tied to outcomes. UGC video contains more product truth than specs, studio media, or text reviews because it shows fit, feel, use-case, and tradeoffs in real contexts. It is how people actually decide what to buy.

Today, the most impactful buyer video lives on platforms like TikTok and Reels, disconnected from product pages, outcomes, and brand control. Vidably brings that content onto owned commerce surfaces, uses AI to turn it into structured, SKU-level evidence, and measures what actually drives conversion. We share incremental value with creators, which unlocks far more high-quality buyer video and a system that learns what matters for each product.

This is the missing input for shopping agents. The same signals humans use to buy confidently are the signals an agent needs to recommend, compare, and explain products with real evidence, not guesswork.

Vidably is backed and supported by AI Fund.ย  Founded by Andrew Ng, AI Fund is backed by over $370 million. As a venture studio, AI Fund works alongside entrepreneurs, venture funds, and corporate partners to build new companies rapidly and increase their odds of success.

About the role
This is a hands-on, jump-into-anything role on a small, talented team. You'll help build the AI-powered evidence layer for commerce, making Vidably self-serve and reliable across real Shopify storefronts. Candidates must currently be based in the Bay Area. Relocation will not be an option for this role.
Responsibilities for the Role Include:
  • Build and ship across the full stack: Shopify app, storefront widget, AI extraction pipeline, internal tooling
  • Harden a live Shopify app and storefront integration across OS 2.0 and legacy theme realities with safe rollouts and easy rollback
  • Extend the mobile web creator upload flow with Mux: QR prompt record/upload consent submit
  • Turn raw buyer video into structured product evidence at scale: AI extraction, review/approve/publish, and self-serve tooling
What Success Looks Like:
  • Onboarding new customers becomes boring and repeatable
  • Founder minutes per merchant drops materially because workflows are productized
  • We can scale customers without bespoke engineering per store
Required Qualifications Include:
  • You've shipped to production across the stack and you close loops fast - you design, build, debug, and operate
  • Strong fundamentals: performance, reliability, security, and product/UX judgment (especially on conversion-sensitive surfaces)
  • AI-native builder: you ship production code with agentic tools (Cursor, Claude Code, Codex CLI, similar).
  • You use AI for speed, keep quality high with tests/CI/observability, and can debug when AI output is wrong
  • Thrive in ambiguity and a very small-team environment.
  • You're excited to learn new tools and domains fast, and you jump into whatever needs doing
Nice to Have Skills Include:
  • Shopify apps/theme integration experience, or embedded widget/SDK experience in hostile third-party environments
  • Video pipeline familiarity (Mux or similar)
  • Experimentation/analytics rigor: clean event design, integrity checks, debugging
We may use artificial intelligence (AI) tools to support parts of the hiring process, such as reviewing applications, analyzing resumes, or assessing responses and identifying potential inconsistencies or verification signals in application materials based on available information. These tools assist our recruitment team but do not replace human judgment. Final hiring decisions are ultimately made by humans. If you would like more information about how your data is processed, please contact us.
