NSC Technologies is actively seeking a motivated Rigger Helper to join our team in the San Diego area. This position is ideal for candidates with strong mechanical aptitude, rigging experience, and the ability to perform demanding physical work in a shipyard environment while complying with OSHA safety standards.
Position Overview:
As a Rigger / Material Handling Technician, you will assemble rigging to lift and move equipment and materials throughout shipyards, piers, docks, and aboard vessels. You will support lifting operations, operate equipment such as forklifts, trucks, and jacks, and ensure safe handling of loads in compliance with company safety rules and OSHA requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Assemble rigging and attach loads with lifting devices (wire, straps, chains) to crane hooks.
  • Safely rig and use chainfalls, wire clamps, synthetic slings, and wire rope load charts.
  • Operate forklifts (as needed), drive trucks, and use hydraulic/mechanical jacks.
  • Lubricate or slush wire, and use proper hand signals for rigging communication.
  • Support material handling across piers, docks, and shipboard environments.
  • Monitor work areas for safety, environmental, and quality compliance.
  • Work independently and assist in training junior team members.
  • Perform tasks outside primary craft as needed.

Skills & Qualifications:
  • Experience:
  • Prior rigging, material handling, or shipyard/naval vessel experience preferred.
  • Ability to demonstrate practical rigging skills during hiring process.
  • Knowledge & Skills:
  • Understanding of load charts and sling capacities.
  • Ability to read and follow written/oral instructions and safety guidelines.
  • Good mechanical aptitude and use of rigging hand signals.
  • Basic math skills (fractions, decimals, metric/standard conversions).
  • Language & Reasoning:
  • Ability to read/write simple instructions and communicate effectively in group or one-on-one settings.
  • Apply common sense to problem-solving in varied work situations.

Physical Demands:
  • Lift/push/pull up to 100 lbs occasionally, 20 lbs frequently.
  • Bend, squat, kneel, crawl, and climb ladders, scaffolding, and ramps.
  • Work in confined spaces (18" x 36" openings) for extended periods.
  • Perform prolonged standing (2-3 hours) and overhead work.
  • Tolerate extreme hot/cold weather conditions and noisy environments.
  • Safely use PPE (hard hat, respirator, fall protection, flotation gear, steel-toe boots, safety glasses, etc.).
  • Work at heights 12 feet or more using ladders, scaffolds, or manlifts.

Work Environment:
  • Shipyard, vessel, and outdoor conditions (heat, cold, humidity, noise, moving mechanical parts).
  • PPE is mandatory for all tasks to reduce exposure risks.
  • Occasional work in normal office settings for planning and reporting.
