The Senior Manager / Director of Transportation & Shipping Operations is responsible for leading all outbound transportation, shipping office, yard operations, and specialized delivery services across the distribution network. This includes ownership of cost, service, execution, and customer experience across standard deliveries and high-touch segments such as showroom buildouts and retail deliveries.

This role drives alignment between internal teams (operations, customer service, sales), external partners (Redwood, carriers, specialized service providers), and system platforms to ensure scalable, consistent, and high-quality execution.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Other minor duties may be assigned.

  • Own end-to-end outbound transportation performance across LTL, TL, parcel, final mile, and specialized delivery services
  • Ensure routing guide adherence and proper service-level selection, including standard vs. inside delivery vs. white-glove services
  • Lead network optimization initiatives across NJ03, AZ02, and future nodes
  • Integrate high-touch delivery requirements into standard operating models
Showroom Buildout & Retail Delivery Support (NEW)
  • Own transportation strategy and execution for showroom buildouts, retail store openings, and customer-facing installations
    • Consolidation and sequencing of shipments
    • Time-specific delivery windows
    • Liftgate, inside delivery, and white-glove services
  • Partner with Sales, Project Management, and Customer Service to align on:
    • Delivery schedules and site readiness
    • Special handling requirements and access constraints
  • Ensure carriers and service providers are properly equipped to support:
    • Urban / limited-access locations
    • High-value or fragile materials
  • Develop SOPs and playbooks for showroom and retail project execution
  • Monitor and manage performance against key milestones and delivery timelines
  • Lead escalation management for time-sensitive projects and customer commitments
  • Lead carrier strategy, selection, and performance management across all modes
  • Own relationships with key partners including Redwood and specialized final-mile providers
  • Manage KPIs across both standard and project-based deliveries:
    • On-time to appointment
    • Delivery completion against project timelines
    • Service failures, damages, and install-related issues
  • Drive corrective actions and continuous improvement with carrier base
Shipping Office & Yard Operations
  • Oversee shipping office execution including:
    • BOL generation and accuracy (including complex, multi-stop/project shipments)
    • Routing guide adherence
    • Appointment scheduling and execution
  • Ensure yard operations support both standard outbound flow and staged project shipments
  • Drive strong trailer visibility, dock flow, and dwell time management
Fleet & Driver Management
  • Experience managing commercial drivers, transportation fleet operations, and DOT-regulated transportation activities is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of fleet safety programs, driver qualification requirements, Hours-of-Service regulations, vehicle maintenance programs, and DOT compliance standards preferred.
  • Experience managing company-owned power units, yard operations, jockey drivers, shuttle drivers, or private fleet operations is a plus.
  • Proven ability to establish safety-focused transportation programs while maintaining operational efficiency and service performance.
  • Own transportation budget, including standard freight and project-based delivery costs
  • Manage cost drivers associated with showroom/retail deliveries:
    • White-glove and specialized handling services
  • Identify cost optimization opportunities without compromising service quality
  • Support bid events and carrier negotiations for both core and specialized services
Systems & Integration Ownership
  • Ensure transportation systems support both standard and project-based workflows:
    • Redwood (TMS execution, visibility)
    • EasyPost (where applicable)
  • Drive visibility into service levels, accessorials, and tracking for high-touch deliveries
  • Partner with IT to enable scalable solutions for project tracking and execution
Cross-Functional Alignment
  • Partner closely with:
    • Sales (showroom and retail project pipelines)
    • Customer Service (CSX) for delivery coordination and escalation
    • Operations for staging and readiness
    • Pre-ship planning (project coordination)
    • Post-ship issue resolution (delivery execution)
  • Lead and develop transportation, shipping office, and yard leadership teams
  • Build capabilities to support both standard operations and complex project deliveries
  • Address staffing and coverage gaps (including second shift and extended hours support)
  • Promote accountability and a high-performance culture
Qualifications

The requirements listed below are representative of the qualifications necessary to perform the job.

Education & Experience
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Supply Chain, Logistics, Business, or related field (MBA preferred for Director level)
  • 7-12+ years of transportation/logistics experience
  • Proven experience managing high-touch delivery models (retail, showroom, project-based logistics, or white-glove delivery)
  • Experience with multi-site operations and 3PL/TMS providers (Redwood strongly preferred)
  • Deep understanding of LTL/TL operations and final-mile delivery, including white-glove services
  • Strong project management capability for multi-shipment, time-sensitive initiatives
  • Financial acumen with strong control of transportation and accessorial costs
  • Excellent stakeholder management across Sales, Operations, and external partners
  • Strong systems mindset with ability to drive process and visibility improvements

Compensation

$120,000 - 135,000 per year

Actual compensation is based on multiple factors that are unique to each candidate, including but not limited to skill set, level of relevant experience, and specific work location. Salary ranges for positions based in other locations may differ based on the cost of labor in that location.
