What is a shipping associate?

Shipping Associates are logistics professionals responsible for preparing, packaging, and dispatching outgoing shipments from warehouses or distribution centers. They manage the documentation for outgoing goods, ensure orders are accurately filled, and coordinate with carriers to meet delivery schedules. Shipping Associates also inspect packages for damage, track inventory, and may operate equipment such as forklifts or pallet jacks. Their role is essential in ensuring that products reach customers efficiently and in good condition.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a shipping associate, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Shipping Associate, you need attention to detail, basic math skills, and experience with inventory or warehouse operations, often supported by a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with shipping software, barcode scanners, and warehouse management systems is typically required. Strong organizational skills, reliability, and effective communication help ensure smooth coordination with team members and timely order fulfillment. These skills are essential for maintaining accurate shipments, minimizing errors, and supporting efficient logistics operations.

  • Making Decisions:

    • Prioritize tasks based on customer needs, shipping deadlines, and changing operational demands in a fast-paced environment.

  • Cultivating Relationships:

    • Partner closely with Supply Chain, Production, Warehouse, and other teams to ensure orders are ready to ship and issues are resolved quickly.

  • Instilling Trust:

    • Support inventory accuracy, shipping documentation, order verification, and other operational processes to ensure customers receive the right product at the right time.

  • Customer Focus:

    • Be willing to work hands-on and stay until critical priorities are completed, especially when supporting high-volume retail shipments or time-sensitive customer orders.

What background should you have?
    • 1-3 years of experience in shipping, warehouse, fulfillment, logistics, supply chain, manufacturing, or a similar operational environment.
    • Experience supporting retail customer orders, distribution, or high-volume shipping operations preferred.
    • Forklift experience required; forklift certification preferred or willingness to become certified.
    • Strong Excel or Google Sheets skills required, including the ability to organize data, track operational metrics, and maintain reports.
    • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, hands-on warehouse or manufacturing environment.
    • Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining accuracy.
    • Willing to work hard, stay until critical work is complete, and demonstrate flexibility when business needs change.
    • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify issues and take action quickly.
    • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
    • High degree of initiative, follow-through, accountability, and ownership.
    • Ability to work independently while also contributing as part of a team.
    • Experience with inventory management, warehouse systems, ERP systems, or shipping systems is a plus.
