Job description

Position Overview:

The Shipping Lead will administer processes and procedures in the shipping department in Alpharetta, GA.  Must be able to organize, plan, provide tools and information to organize and schedule and prepare shipments for trucks to accommodate the high pressure demand of our industry.  Record time, date, quantity, source, and destination of materials shipped.  Ensure that goods are verified against records of shipment.  Supervise the maintenance of records of damaged or defective items and discrepancies in quantities and weights.  Some knowledge of manufacturing including operational departments (Engineering, Purchasing, Project Management and Logistics).


Essential Job Functions:

•    Oversee outgoing shipping activities to ensure accuracy, completeness, and condition of shipments.

•    Organize and prepare daily shipments.

•    Direct movement of shipments from shipping to storage and work areas.

•    Determine space requirements and position of shipment in trucks and lays out position of shipment.

•    Follow QA procedures.

•    Communicate to all internal customers.

•    Communicate outgoing shipment requirements with designated carriers and employees in shipping.

•    Organize, distribute and print all orders.  Ship and close out all sales orders.

•    Create and print packing lists and Bill of Ladings.

•    Prepare daily management and weekly reports.

•    Maintain various files and records – both computerized and hard copy files.

•    Provide training, scheduling, and guidance to shipping personnel.

•    Coordinate with the Shop Supervisors and Leads, Master Scheduler and other shop personnel in order to attain delivery, cost and quality of service objectives.

•    Ensure the cost effectiveness of the delivery function, including the control of labor utilization - preventing excess hours, downtime and overtime, and efficient usage of transportation related equipment.

•    Foster positive working relationships. Respond proactively to performance concerns, discipline, employee complaints, and other employee relations matters.

•    Determine space requirements and position of shipment in boxcars and trucks and lay out position of shipment.

•    Assist in picking orders when needed.

Minimum Qualifications: 

 To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Demonstrated experience leading shipping, receiving, or warehouse staff in a manufacturing or distribution environment.
  • Hands-on experience with truck scheduling, carrier coordination, and dock/appointment management.
  • Working knowledge of shipping documentation, bills of lading, and freight carrier processes.
  • Familiarity with OSHA safety regulations and a demonstrated commitment to maintaining a safe work environment.
  • Basic computer proficiency, including the ability to enter data and navigate an ERP or warehouse management system (Macola experience a plus).
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and shifting delivery schedules simultaneously.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; able to give clear direction, provide constructive feedback, and coordinate effectively with carriers, drivers, and internal departments.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to make sound, timely decisions under pressure in a fast-paced shipping environment.
  • Demonstrated reliability and accountability; must be available to work the full shift schedule and occasional overtime as shipping demands require.
  • Experience in wood manufacturing a plus, but not required.
  • Lift, carry, push and or pull 1 - 50 lbs. frequently.
  • Forklift certification, or willingness to obtain one, is a plus.

Education and/or Experience:

  • High school diploma or G.E.D. required; Associate’s degree in logistics, supply chain, business administration, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of two (2) to four (4) years of experience in shipping, receiving, or logistics, including truck scheduling/carrier coordination, preferably in a manufacturing environment.
  • Prior supervisory or lead experience preferred.
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification is a plus.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, bend, and reach for extended periods on the shipping/receiving floor. Use of a forklift, pallet jack, or other material handling equipment is required. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

  • The primary working conditions are those of a warehouse/shipping dock environment, with exposure to variable temperatures, noise from material handling equipment, and dock-level traffic. The employee may occasionally be exposed to outdoor weather conditions while supervising dock activities.
