Job description

SUMMARY:
The Shipping Lead verifies/supports shipping functions and procedures are being followed. They also prepare items for shipment which includes; picking, labeling, loading/unloading, lifting, operating forklift and handheld RF Scanners; participates in continuous improvement, planning, scheduling, and reporting activities; help department leaders to develop a positive work culture.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty and other duties as assigned, satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Safety Responsibilities (100% time)
  • Follows all safety rules and regulations including always wearing required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as bump cap, ear plugs, safety glasses, gloves etc.
  • Ensures that others in Shipping Department are following all safety rules
  • Reports non-working equipment to Maintenance
  • Follows procedures outlined by Shipping Manager
  • Understands and follows food safety guidelines
  • Understand and follows USDA regulations
  • Is aware of the location of the drivers at all times
  • Does not allow drivers to leave loading dock areas

Associate Interaction and Involvement (80% time)
  • Example activities include Associate Development - coaching, mentoring, working with associates throughout work area during assigned shift, assist with conflict resolution among associate, and training. Fosters positive working relationships. Responds proactively to daily activities to ensure proper procedures are being followed.

  • Assist Shipping Manager with identifying labor needs, training, and coaching for improved performance.

Specifically:
  • Provides leadership and supervision to the daily activities in the Shipping Department to ensure a safe, secure, and clean environment for associates.
  • Ensures the associates have proper access to the necessary tools to perform their assigned duties and that the tools are routinely inspected and maintained.

  • Assists Shipping Manager in all shipping and receiving processes are being followed to ensure accuracy, completeness, condition of shipments, and all transactions made in CAT2 - Computer base processes are done correctly (building loads, repositioning, scanning orders to manifest, receiving)

  • Performs cycle counting, identifying items and inventory discrepancies to help ensure accuracy and keep the integrity of the inventory. Help and assist with all movements of inventory from production to designated transfer points to storage and or work areas.

  • Inspects loading operations to ensure compliance with shipping procedures and policies. Seals, bill of lading, loaded trailers and truck doors.

  • Is actively involved in each work function to support shipping/receiving procedures and efficiency of all workflow functions and managing utilization of limited area of space.
  • Communicates and works effectively with clerks, administration, management and team to ensure accuracy of orders, shipments, receives, inventory, or discrepancies.
  • Must be able demonstrate advanced skills with forklifts and electric pallet jacks.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Continuous Improvement Process (10% time)
  • Example activities include process development and improvement, project planning and execution, space planning.

Specifically:
  • Assists Department Supervisor/Manager with organization and lead the focus on improved productivity levels in a manner that first stresses effectiveness by improving processes and secondly stresses the efficiency of associate work.
  • Provides feedback and communicate with the leadership team in safety, labor, and best practices.
  • Participates in the completion process development, projects, and best practices for improvement implementation.

Planning (5% time)
  • Example activities include manpower planning, forklift utilization, work flow prioritization, utilization of space, and daily scheduling.

Specifically
  • Assists with planning; adjusting the daily workload and staffing needs in each work functions or area to minimize overtime, and provide feedback of all or any changes that may affect department productivity.

Communications and Reporting (5% time)
  • Example activities include department meetings, carrier/driver interaction, vendor provider, and internal communications with peers and other departments. Assist with KPI tracking, quality reports, audits, material handling equipment reports, individual performance tracking

Specifically:
  • Effectively communicates work task Standard Operating Procedures, convey key information during pre-shift meetings and ensure appropriate shift hand-offs.

  • Coordinates with the Department Managers, Supervisors, Quality Assurance, and other required personnel in order to attain delivery, cost and quality of service objectives.

  • Performs an end of day report that includes all in/out-bound activities, challenges/issues, safety/lost time, and or other necessary activities to support best practices.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The following requirements are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Previous Shipping/Receiving experience required. High School Diploma desired.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS: Must be able to effectively read, write, and speak English. Bilingual in Spanish preferred.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Very strong math skills required for various tasks.
REASONING ABILITY: Must be able to make good decisions in apply Shipping Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), applying policies in the Employee Handbook, and using good judgment.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Must be computer literate with intermediate skills in Excel. Proven ability to motivate, coach and train subordinates.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  • Must have adequate eyesight and hearing to be able to recognize hazards to equipment and personnel.
  • Must be able to turn in all directions in order to observe objects and employees nearby.
  • Full range of motion in extremities to allow proper movement and handling of product.
  • Must be able to walk or stand for at least 90% of assigned shift.
  • Must have ability to lift up to 75 pounds occasionally, and up to 50 pounds frequently throughout shift.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Must be able to work in, and tolerate, a cold and wet environment normally ranging from 0 degrees Fahrenheit to 27 degrees Fahrenheit.
NORMAL WORK SCHEDULE: The hours and days of work are established by departmental needs and at the discretion of management. Overtime or changes in schedule will be required as special circumstances arise.
