Job description

A.I.S., Inc. (AIS) is a national scientific services firm supporting maritime activities requiring certification of compliance with environmental regulations as well as collecting data for use by Federal, State, Municipal, and other government agencies along the US coastline.
Primary Functions:
AIS is looking for a Hatchery Project Manager to support NOAAs' Northeast Oyster Breeding Center (NOBC). The NOBC is a cooperative venture of the Northeast Fisheries Science Center (NEFSC), the USDAs Agricultural Research Service (ARS), and the East Coast Shellfish Growers Association (ECSGA) with development initiatives aimed at producing superior oyster lines.
The NOBC hatchery is being designed to implement a breeding plan formulated by USDA/ARS geneticists with annual cycles of family-based breeding of up to 100 crosses per year. Small oyster seed (~2-3 mm) from each cross will be provided to commercial partners to evaluate performance and inform subsequent breeding cycles. The goal is to provide superior broodstock oysters to commercial hatcheries for success in the diverse growing areas from New York to Maine.
Primary Function:
Leadership
  • Facilitates communication between a team of FTE and contract scientists and technicians in achieving the goals of the NOBC.
  • Develop and monitor workflows for quality assurance and quality control of operations and research.
  • Represent and resolve IT issues.

General
  • Support operation of the NOBC hatchery and nursery with logistical, organizational, and documentation responsibilities
  • Document all activities, including meeting notes, archiving of technical data, and budget summaries.
  • Respond to quantitative data calls, including technical accomplishments, expenditures, and reporting of issues and solutions
  • Interface at least weekly with project managers to receive direction and report progress.
  • Data analysis and graphical representation (graphically portray summary data for presentation by leadership)
  • Extract and compile data on system performance and project accomplishments.

Laboratory Operations
  • Understand safety procedures in the laboratory, handle chemicals, do basic chemical safety, and dispose of chemical reagents in compliance with state regulations.
  • Correctly label chemicals and chemical hazardous waste.
  • Provide detailed laboratory notebooks of sample analysis when requested.
  • Record data for all standard operating procedures on chemical analysis.
  • Apply quality control to samples and troubleshoot common laboratory problems.
  • Communicate system and equipment failures to facilities staff and project managers.

Field operations
  • Support coordinated interactions between lab staff, extension, and participating constituents.
  • Participate in field trips to distribute seed oysters and information to participating constituents.
  • Attend scientific and educational conferences to promote results and implications of assigned tasks.
  • Present research material and network on current and future projects, verbally and in writing, including participation in preparation of peer-reviewed publications.

Compensation: Candidates will be paid an hourly rate to be negotiated, and total compensation will vary depending on candidates' availability. This is a full-time position. AIS benefits package includes health and dental insurance, vacation, sick and holiday benefits.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor or graduate degree in management or technical field related to project organization and management.
  • Be able to drive a government vehicle.
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate a large and diverse team to accomplish complex, technical objectives.
  • Demonstrated ability to have primary responsibility for function of a shellfish hatchery, including scheduling and organizing spawning, coordinating a team accomplishing larval rearing and early nursery culture, and quantitative documentation of all steps leading to production of shellfish seed target quantities.
  • Experience with logistical support of complex, technical projects.
  • Experience with archiving and organizing technical data.
  • Experience with data QA/QC and graphical display.
  • Experience communicating with both technical experts and constituents/end-users..
  • Experience working across disciplines.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • M.Sc. or equivalent in aquaculture, marine science, or a related field is an asset but consideration will also be given to applicants with relevant shellfish industry experience.

Travel:
  • Travel is anticipated for site visits and conference opportunities.
