You will fabricate and assemble fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP) tank components using specialized hand lay-up processes. Working Monday through Thursday on second shift from 4:30 PM to 3:00 AM, you will play an essential role in meeting production targets while maintaining Xerxes' high standards of quality and safety. This role operates in our Edmonton, AB manufacturing facility and reports to the Production Supervisor/Manager, contributing directly to Xerxes' position as the largest manufacturer of underground fiberglass storage tanks in the world.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate machines and use hand/power tools (e.g., grinders, trimmers, rollers, saws) to cut, shape, splice, and fit plastic/fiberglass materials into tank parts and assemblies.
  • Follow blueprints and drawings to align and join tank shell halves using a hand lay-up process.
  • Assemble structural components and ensure proper bond/lamination between layers.
  • Install fittings, gauge plates, manways, and other components onto the tanks according to specifications.
  • Ensure all accessories are securely and accurately attached.
  • Cut and prepare composite materials (fiberglass cloth, resin, etc.) using patterns and templates for assembling parts.
  • Make minor adjustments or repairs to parts as needed to achieve proper fit and finish.
  • Inspect work periodically during the assembly process to ensure compliance with quality standards.
  •  Identify any defects or issues and correct them or report to supervisors.
  • Accurately document production information on process sheets, work orders, and timecards.
  • Complete all required paperwork in a timely manner to record work completed and materials used.
  • Maintain a neat and tidy work area, keeping tools and equipment organized.
  • Perform basic preventive maintenance on tools/equipment as required to keep them operational (e.g., cleaning, checking tool condition).
  • Collaborate with team members and supervisors to meet production schedules.
  • Assist in other production or assembly tasks as required to support the overall manufacturing process.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent is preferred
  • Minimum 1 year of experience in a manufacturing or industrial production environment is required. Prior experience in an assembly role or working with fiberglass/plastics is a strong plus.
  • Ability to read and follow blueprints, drawings, or technical schematics (training can be provided, but this skill is considered an asset).
  • Good command of the English language (reading, writing, speaking) and the ability to communicate effectively with team members. Must be able to follow verbal and written instructions and work as part of a team.
  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills to identify and fix material or product defects. Ability to troubleshoot minor issues during the assembly process and seek guidance for complex problems.
  • Ability and willingness to learn new tools, equipment, and procedures. Must be open to training and quickly picking up new skills or techniques as the manufacturing process evolves.
  • Willingness to work the assigned second shift schedule reliably. Ability to work overtime or occasional weekends if production deadlines require.

Preferred Skills and Attributes

  • Prior experience using a spray gun or spray-up equipment for applying resins or coatings is a definite asset.
  • Familiarity or past work with fiberglass, resins, or composite materials in a production setting is highly beneficial. Comfort working in an environment where these materials are used (including exposure to fiberglass dust and resin odors) is important.
  • Strong ability to interpret blueprints and drawings (if you have this skill, it will be a plus even though it can be learned on the job).
  • Experience with other manufacturing equipment (e.g., spray systems, forklifts or overhead cranes for moving large parts) is a plus. Certification or ability to be trained in forklift/overhead crane operation is advantageous.
  • A proactive attitude toward efficiency and quality improvement. Willingness to suggest ideas and adapt to lean manufacturing or process improvements.

Physical Requirements

  • Good hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity to handle small tools and precise tasks.
  • Ability to work in a fiberglass manufacturing environment, which can include exposure to fiberglass fibers, dust, chemicals/resins, and consistently moderate industrial noise. Appropriate PPE (personal protective equipment) is provided.
