Shadow Intern information

What can I expect from the daily experience as a Shadow Intern, and how does it differ from a traditional internship?

As a Shadow Intern, your primary focus will be observing and learning from professionals in your field rather than performing hands-on tasks or independent projects. This experience offers a behind-the-scenes look at typical workflows, decision-making processes, and team dynamics, allowing you to gain a realistic understanding of the role. While you may not have direct responsibilities, you'll often participate in meetings, attend training sessions, and have the opportunity to ask questions. The structure is usually less formal than a standard internship, emphasizing learning and exposure over output, which is ideal for those exploring career options or looking to build foundational knowledge.

What is the difference between Shadow Intern vs Intern?

AspectShadow InternIntern
CredentialsTypically no formal credentials required; focus on observationUsually students or entry-level with minimal requirements
Work EnvironmentObservational, shadowing professionalsHands-on tasks, active participation
Employer UsageUsed for learning and exposureUsed for skill development and project work
Search & Comparison IntentUnderstanding observational rolesSeeking active internship opportunities

In summary, a Shadow Intern primarily observes professionals to gain industry insight, while an Intern actively participates in tasks to develop skills. Both roles are common in educational and entry-level contexts but differ in engagement level and responsibilities.

What are shadow interns?

Shadow interns are individuals, often students or recent graduates, who observe professionals in a workplace to gain insights into a specific career or industry. Unlike traditional interns, shadow interns typically do not perform hands-on tasks but instead follow employees to learn about their daily responsibilities, company culture, and workflow. This experience helps them understand the realities of the job and decide if it aligns with their career interests. Shadowing is usually short-term and serves as an introduction to a particular field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Shadow Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Shadow Intern, you need a keen willingness to learn, observational skills, and a foundational understanding of the industry or field you are shadowing. Familiarity with basic productivity tools (like Microsoft Office or Google Workspace) and any field-specific software is helpful. Professionalism, strong communication, and initiative are important soft skills that help you build relationships and make the most of the experience. These abilities are crucial because they allow you to absorb knowledge effectively, demonstrate your potential, and leave a positive impression for future career opportunities.

Job description

Internship Term: Fall 2026 (September-December)
Internship Location: on-site in Indianapolis, IN
Anticipated Time Commitment: Opportunities available at approximately 20-25 hours per week, or approximately 40 hours per week
We're Drafting & Developing the BEST: Have you always dreamed of working for a professional sports franchise? Do you want to be the BEST in the NBA? If your answer is YES to these questions, then an internship with the Indiana Pacers Ticket Sales Department is the opportunity of a lifetime.
Start Here, Stay Here: If you're looking for an internship just to fulfill some needed credits in order to graduate, look for something else. Our internship program is all about preparing you for a career selling sports. We are hiring interns who are dedicated to our team. We are looking for quality people who want to impress us so much that we offer them a full-time job when they graduate.

If you've proven yourself as a dedicated person with a strong work ethic and a genuine interest in sales, then you are right at the top of the list when we hire people for our full-time positions. This internship could be the start of an illustrious NBA career for you.
The Scouting Report:
We are looking for the following qualities and characteristics in a Ticket Sales Intern:
  • A strong desire to be in ticket sales after graduation
  • A competitive edge that drives them to be the BEST

  • Interest in business
  • This internship requires flexibility with work schedule. Interns will be required to work games and other company and sales events during the evening and weekend.

The Game Plan: This is a great launching point to begin your career in sports ticket sales. You'll learn how to help our Corporate Ticket Sales Managers and Group Event Specialists remain as efficient as possible. You'll be doing a lot of their administrative work. Best of all, you'll be able to get actual hands-on sales experience as we allow you to shadow the Ticket Sales representatives on the phones, out of the office on appointments, and at different events during the season and during the off-season. This is a paid internship with flexible hours to accommodate your class schedule.
Game Recap of Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Researching qualified leads.
  • Researching local businesses, organizations, teams, etc.
  • Mailing out large ticket blocks.
  • Completing data entry utilizing Microsoft Excel and Archtics.

Qualification Requirements: The Ticket Sales Intern must be enrolled in college course(s) as a junior, senior, or graduate student while maintaining an internship with the Indiana Pacers. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed above are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
Role Players Need Not Apply. We're Looking for Future Hall of Famers!
We are working to develop the best ticket sales department in all of sports. Therefore, we will be very selective in who we add to our team. We're looking for candidates who are competitive, detail oriented, coachable, and who have the desire to climb to the top of the industry. Are you ready to be our next All-Star?
We are an equal opportunity employer, and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, age, gender identity, marital status, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
