Job description

Gender And Sexuality Alliance Sponsor (High School)

The Gender and Sexuality Alliance (GSA) Sponsor plays a critical role in supporting a student-led organization that promotes belonging, respect, awareness, and positive school culture. This position guides and supervises GSA members in planning and facilitating meetings, educational activities, awareness initiatives, service opportunities, and school-wide events. The GSA Sponsor supports student voice and leadership while fostering a welcoming environment in which students can build connections, engage in respectful dialogue, increase awareness of issues related to gender and sexuality, and contribute to a school community that values the dignity and inclusion of all students in alignment with District expectations and school guidelines.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

A. Education And Experience:

  1. Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in education from an accredited college or university

B. Credentials:

  1. Illinois Professional Educator license with the required endorsements as provided in the school code.

C. Knowledge, Skills And Abilities:

  1. Knowledge of the purpose and function of Gender and Sexuality Alliances and other student-led organizations that promote belonging, awareness, leadership, and positive school culture.
  2. Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and Board of Education policies related to student rights, conduct, supervision, nondiscrimination, harassment, bullying, privacy, and school-sponsored activities.
  3. Knowledge of age-appropriate concepts and terminology related to gender, sexual orientation, identity, allyship, inclusion, and respectful interpersonal interactions.
  4. Skill in clear, professional, and respectful oral and written communication with students, staff, families, administrators, and community partners.
  5. Effective interpersonal and active listening skills that support student voice, respectful dialogue, collaboration, and relationship building.
  6. Strong organizational skills with the ability to plan meetings, coordinate activities and events, and meet established deadlines.
  7. Ability to guide and support student-led planning, decision-making, problem-solving, and leadership development.
  8. Demonstrated leadership skills appropriate to advising and supervising a student organization.
  9. Ability to facilitate respectful discussions involving diverse perspectives, experiences, identities, and backgrounds.
  10. Ability to recognize situations requiring referral to appropriate school personnel and connect students with available school-based supports consistent with District procedures.
  11. Ability to maintain appropriate professional boundaries and protect confidential student information in accordance with applicable law and District procedures.
  12. Ability to exercise sound judgment in sensitive and student-centered situations.
  13. Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse cultural, socioeconomic, academic, and personal backgrounds.

Essential Functions
  1. Facilitates and oversees the planning and implementation of the GSA's annual program of meetings, activities, educational opportunities, and initiatives.
  2. Conducts and supervises regular GSA meetings in accordance with school expectations and established procedures for student organizations.
  3. Guides student members in establishing club goals, leadership roles, meeting structures, and priorities that reflect student interests and the purpose of the organization.
  4. Supports student-led planning, decision-making, and implementation of activities that promote belonging, respect, awareness, and positive school culture.
  5. Creates and maintains a welcoming environment in which students can participate, build connections, share perspectives, and engage in respectful dialogue.
  6. Supports age-appropriate student learning and awareness related to gender, sexuality, identity, allyship, inclusion, healthy relationships, and respectful treatment of others.
  7. Guides students in planning educational campaigns, awareness activities, service projects, guest speakers, presentations, and other initiatives consistent with school and District expectations.
  8. Promotes student leadership by providing opportunities for members to facilitate meetings, develop initiatives, communicate with stakeholders, and assume meaningful responsibilities within the organization.
  9. Collaborates with administrators, counselors, social workers, teachers, and other appropriate school personnel to support GSA activities and broader school climate initiatives.
  10. Provides students with information regarding appropriate school-based resources and refers students to qualified school personnel when individual needs extend beyond the scope of the sponsor role.
  11. Supports school efforts to prevent bullying, harassment, discrimination, and exclusion and promotes respectful interactions among members of the school community.
  12. Provides guidance to students regarding school policies, procedures, behavioral expectations, and appropriate processes for raising concerns or seeking assistance.
  13. Plans, coordinates, and supervises GSA-sponsored events and activities, including appropriate logistical arrangements, approvals, and student supervision.
  14. Serves as a chaperone and ensures appropriate supervision and student safety during meetings, events, activities, and other GSA-sponsored functions.
  15. Collaborates with other clubs, student organizations, staff members, and administrators when coordinating activities or initiatives that contribute to student engagement and positive school climate.
  16. Maintains accurate records and safeguards confidential student information in accordance with District procedures and applicable legal requirements.
  17. Communicates effectively and professionally with students, staff, families, administrators, and community partners regarding GSA activities and initiatives.
  18. Models professionalism, respect, inclusivity, appropriate boundaries, and ethical leadership for participating students.
  19. Attends required meetings, trainings, and in-services related to the role and remains informed regarding District expectations applicable to student organizations.
  20. Performs related duties as required.
