What is a set stylist?

Set stylists are creative professionals responsible for designing and arranging the visual elements of a set for photography, film, television, or events. They select props, furniture, and decor to create a desired mood or theme, ensuring everything looks visually appealing and suits the project's objectives. Set stylists often collaborate closely with art directors, photographers, and other creative team members to bring a specific vision to life.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a set stylist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Set Stylist, you need a strong eye for design, creativity, and knowledge of visual composition, often supported by a background in art, design, or fashion. Familiarity with industry-standard tools such as Adobe Creative Suite, prop sourcing platforms, and inventory management systems is common. Excellent communication, collaboration, and attention to detail are standout soft skills for managing client expectations and working with production teams. These skills ensure that sets are visually compelling, on-brand, and effectively support the narrative or marketing goals of the project.

What are some common challenges faced by set stylists when working on photo or film shoots?

Set stylists often encounter tight deadlines and last-minute changes, which require quick problem-solving and adaptability. Balancing the creative vision of directors, photographers, and clients while staying within budget constraints can also be challenging. Additionally, sourcing and transporting props, as well as coordinating with other departments like lighting and wardrobe, demands strong organizational and communication skills. Despite these challenges, the collaborative and dynamic nature of the work makes it rewarding for those who thrive in fast-paced creative environments.

Job description

About TC Shadowlight
TC Shadowlight is a creative production studio specializing in building inspiring environments for some of the world's leading brands. We pride ourselves on our collaborative culture, creative problem-solving, and passion for bringing ideas to life.
Our Art Department creates interior environments for commercial photography, video, product storytelling, and digital content. Using furniture, accessories, textiles, artwork, architectural elements, color, and materials, our team transforms creative concepts into fully realized, camera-ready spaces that support our clients' brands.
As our creative work continues to evolve, we are expanding our Art Department and building out our styling team. We are seeking Interior Designers and Set Stylists with a strong eye for interiors, styling, composition, and visual storytelling.
This is an opportunity to apply interior design and decorating skills in a unique creative environment. Rather than designing permanent residential or commercial spaces, our team creates temporary, highly detailed interior environments for photography and video-often moving from one style, brand, and creative challenge to another.
Candidates may come from interior design, interior decorating, home styling, visual merchandising, set styling, or related creative backgrounds. Experience in a production studio is not required for the right candidate; we are interested in strong creative instincts, an understanding of interiors, and the ability and desire to learn our production process.
Position Overview
The Interior Designer / Set Stylist works within the Art Department to develop and execute visually compelling, camera-ready environments for photo and video productions.
Depending on experience, this position may support or independently lead aspects of creative development, interior styling, room assembly, prop sourcing, client brand interpretation, and on-set execution.
The ideal candidate combines a strong understanding of interior design principles-including scale, proportion, balance, color, texture, composition, and spatial relationships-with the flexibility and problem-solving skills needed to bring a creative vision to life in a fast-paced studio environment.
Responsibilities
  • Develop and execute interior environments and room scenes for commercial photography and video productions.
  • Select and style furniture, artwork, accessories, textiles, lighting, dรฉcor, and architectural elements to create cohesive and visually compelling spaces.
  • Apply interior design principles including scale, proportion, balance, harmony, color, contrast, rhythm, and composition.
  • Create and revise style boards, inspiration presentations, color palettes, and other visual references.
  • Source furniture, props, dรฉcor, materials, and accessories through vendors, retail sources, vintage and antique resources, and our extensive in-house prop collection.
  • Interpret client brands, creative briefs, and visual direction and translate them into physical environments.
  • Work collaboratively with Art Directors, Designers, Set Stylists, Production, Photography, Video, and Carpentry teams to develop and execute creative concepts.
  • Prepare, assemble, style, and maintain camera-ready sets, considering how spaces and styling choices translate through the camera.
  • Make on-set styling adjustments to furniture, props, accessories, and dรฉcor to refine composition and support photography and video needs.
  • Participate in real-time creative problem-solving during productions, including continuity management and styling adjustments.
  • Support or lead prop sourcing, purchasing, organization, pulling, returns, and de-propping depending on experience level.
  • Support specialty styling needs including material boards, flat lays, appliance propping, and food-related environments as needed.
  • Manage multiple projects, changing priorities, production schedules, and deadlines.
  • Track project expenses and work within established styling and production budgets.
  • Stay current on interior design, home, lifestyle, fashion, and consumer trends.
  • Participate in department meetings, creative critiques, training, and collaborative development.
  • Maintain a proactive, solutions-oriented attitude and contribute to the overall success of the Art Department.

Ideal Candidate
  • Has a strong passion for interior design, decorating, styling, and visual storytelling.
  • Has a developed eye for furniture, color, materials, textiles, accessories, scale, proportion, and composition.
  • Can look at a space and understand what it needs visually to feel complete and intentional.
  • Enjoys sourcing and discovering furniture, dรฉcor, artwork, accessories, and unique pieces.
  • Is comfortable moving between different interior styles, aesthetics, brands, and creative directions.
  • Thrives in a collaborative, hands-on creative environment.
  • Demonstrates strong creative instincts and practical problem-solving skills.
  • Is highly organized and detail-oriented.
  • Can balance creative vision with practical execution, schedules, and budgets.
  • Is comfortable managing multiple priorities and shifting deadlines.
  • Is receptive to creative feedback and enjoys collaborating with others.
  • Takes initiative and contributes positively to team success.

Preferred Background
We are particularly interested in candidates with professional experience, education, or a strong portfolio in:
  • Interior Design
  • Interior Decorating
  • Home Styling
  • Home Staging
  • Visual Merchandising
  • Set Styling / Photo Styling
  • Scenic or Environmental Design
  • Other related interiors-focused creative disciplines

Candidates with strong transferable creative experience who demonstrate an exceptional eye for interiors and styling are also encouraged to apply.
Qualifications
  • Degree in Interior Design, Interior Architecture, Fine Arts, Visual Merchandising, or a related creative field is preferred but not required for candidates with relevant professional experience or a strong portfolio.
  • Professional experience in interior design, decorating, styling, visual merchandising, or another related creative environment is preferred.
  • Strong understanding of interior design principles and visual composition.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, deadlines, and changing priorities.
  • Strong attention to detail and follow-through.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and presentation software.
  • Familiarity with Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, SketchUp, or related design and presentation software is a plus.
  • Interest in learning the unique requirements of designing and styling environments for photography and video.

Experience & Growth
We welcome candidates at varying stages of their careers and will tailor responsibilities to demonstrated experience, creative ability, and readiness.
Candidates earlier in their careers may work alongside experienced Set Stylists and Art Directors while developing their skills in studio production, sourcing, client brand interpretation, room assembly, and on-set styling.
More experienced candidates may take greater ownership of creative concepts, sourcing, styling execution, and productions based on demonstrated experience and readiness.
Our goal is to build a strong, collaborative styling team with opportunities for continued creative and professional growth.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift and move items up to 40 lbs independently or with assistance.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, reach, and climb ladders as needed.
  • Ability to work in studio environments and on active productions.
  • Ability to differentiate between colors and materials.
  • Ability to work under deadlines and occasionally adjust schedules to support production needs.
