What is set design?

Set design is the process of creating the physical surroundings in which a film, television show, theater production, or other performance takes place. Set designers are responsible for conceptualizing and building the scenery, backdrops, and props that help bring a script to life and establish the mood and setting. Their work involves collaborating with directors, producers, and other designers to ensure the visual environment supports the story and artistic vision. Set design combines creativity, technical skills, and a strong understanding of architecture and spatial planning.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a set designer?

To thrive as a Set Designer, you need a solid background in art, architecture, or theater design, often supported by a relevant degree or portfolio of work. Expertise with design software such as AutoCAD, SketchUp, and Adobe Creative Suite, as well as familiarity with construction methods and materials, is crucial. Creativity, collaboration, and strong communication skills help Set Designers interpret scripts and work effectively with directors and production teams. These abilities ensure that visual environments enhance storytelling and meet both aesthetic and practical production needs.

How does a set designer typically collaborate with directors and other creative departments during a production?

Set Designers work closely with directors to understand the vision and mood of the production, ensuring the set supports storytelling and character development. They also coordinate with departments such as lighting, props, and costume to ensure all design elements are cohesive and technically feasible. Regular meetings and design presentations help align everyone’s efforts and resolve any logistical challenges early in the process. This collaborative approach is crucial for creating immersive and functional environments on stage or screen.

Job description

HelloFresh is seeking a Senior Art Director to shape and create performance-driven creative across Meta, TikTok and YouTube. Working at the intersection of Growth, brand and culture, you'll turn performance strategy into platform-native creative across video and statics: from concept and visual direction through hands-on design and final execution. This is a player-coach role: you'll set the visual direction for shoots, talent, creators and food, while also getting into the work yourself: designing, building and iterating assets alongside Copy, Video, Production and Creative Strategy. You'll bring strong taste and platform fluency while embracing emerging tools to expand what's creatively possible and scale what works.

You will...

  • Concept, art direct and design platform-native paid social creative across Meta, TikTok, YouTube and OTT - video-first, but spanning static too - that aligns with brand objectives and drives measurable performance for Growth
  • Translate Growth strategy into compelling visual direction: food styling, set design, talent direction and creator partnerships that feel native to each platform and authentic to our brands
  • Collaborate closely with a copywriter to develop strong, cohesive concepts that communicate key messages with clarity and impact
  • Work alongside a videographer, editor and producer, providing creative direction on set and in post: from prop styling and location scouting through casting and directing talent
  • Partner with the Creative Strategy and Growth to understand campaign goals, audience, and performance metrics, and iterate creative based on what the data tells us
  • Review and analyze content performance to identify creative opportunities and provide actionable recommendations for future work
  • Set and maintain a high creative bar across a high-volume pipeline, balancing brand craft with the speed and iteration performance marketing demands.
  • Advance AI-enabled creative workflows across design and static production, using emerging tools to accelerate exploration, iteration and scalable content creation.
  • Stay ahead of platform behavior, visual culture and emerging technology, continuously bringing new creative approaches into the work.
  • Manage multiple workstreams simultaneously while maintaining quality, consistency and on-time delivery.

You are...

  • Someone who takes a human-first approach and is highly collaborative
  • An expert in developing creative for social media platforms, their best practices, and the ability to adapt content for different formats and audiences
  • Proficient in leveraging data and analytics to inform creative decision-making and drive performance optimization
  • A performance creative: you think in scroll-stop, concept strength and creative efficiency, not just aesthetics, and you know how to use data to make better work
  • An exceptional communicator and presenter with the ability to effectively articulate ideas and collaborate with cross-functional teams
  • Able to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment and manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • A strong collaborator with excellent communication skills, and the ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams
  • A passion for creativity and a drive to stay updated with industry trends and emerging technologies
  • A culture fit; someone who interacts with positivity, professionalism, passion, and kindness

At a minimum, you have...

  • 5+ years' experience as an Art Director at a creative agency or design-led consumer brand
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating expertise in video production and art direction, with a focus on paid social campaigns
  • Working knowledge of design software and a hands-on approach to the work
  • Experience being on set, providing live feedback to stylists and videographers, as well as directing talent
  • Ability to work on-site 4 days a week
  • Experience in DTC or food and beverage is a major plus
  • Proven experience working as an Art Director or in a similar creative role, preferably in the digital advertising or social media marketing industry

You'll get...

  • Competitive Salary & 401k company match that vests immediately upon participation
  • Generous parental leave of 16 weeks & PTO policy
  • $0 monthly premium and other flexible health plans effective first day of employment
  • 85% discount on your subscription to HelloFresh (as well as other product initiatives)
  • Snacks, cold brew on tap & monthly catered lunches
  • Company sponsored outings & Employee Resource Groups
  • Collaborative, dynamic work environment within a fast-paced, mission-driven company
