What is set design?

Set design is the process of creating the physical surroundings in which a film, television show, theater production, or other performance takes place. Set designers are responsible for conceptualizing and building the scenery, backdrops, and props that help bring a script to life and establish the mood and setting. Their work involves collaborating with directors, producers, and other designers to ensure the visual environment supports the story and artistic vision. Set design combines creativity, technical skills, and a strong understanding of architecture and spatial planning.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Set Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Set Designer, you need a solid background in art, architecture, or theater design, often supported by a relevant degree or portfolio of work. Expertise with design software such as AutoCAD, SketchUp, and Adobe Creative Suite, as well as familiarity with construction methods and materials, is crucial. Creativity, collaboration, and strong communication skills help Set Designers interpret scripts and work effectively with directors and production teams. These abilities ensure that visual environments enhance storytelling and meet both aesthetic and practical production needs.

What is the difference between Set Design vs Scenic Painting?

Set Design involves creating the overall visual concept and layout of a scene, while Scenic Painting focuses on bringing that vision to life through painting and finishing techniques. Both roles are essential in production, often working closely together, but they require different skill sets and responsibilities.

How does a Set Designer typically collaborate with directors and other creative departments during a production?

Set Designers work closely with directors to understand the vision and mood of the production, ensuring the set supports storytelling and character development. They also coordinate with departments such as lighting, props, and costume to ensure all design elements are cohesive and technically feasible. Regular meetings and design presentations help align everyone’s efforts and resolve any logistical challenges early in the process. This collaborative approach is crucial for creating immersive and functional environments on stage or screen.

Job description

Job Description
The Role
The mission of the GM EDI team is to develop, execute, and maintain an EDI strategy that enables GM to exchange business data across its supply chain quickly, accurately, securely, and at scale. Success in this role requires strong command of GM EDI standards, trading partner processes, enterprise integration patterns, and the business processes that support Purchasing, Supply Chain, Logistics, Manufacturing, Finance, and Retail Sales.
The GM EDI Team is seeking a Senior System Engineer to partner across internal IT teams, business stakeholders, external trading partners, and strategic SaaS vendors. This role is ideal for a senior-level EDI professional who combines deep technical expertise with strong systems thinking, business process knowledge, and the ability to influence modern integration solutions.
In this role, you will help support EDI operations, modernization, process automation, and technical thought leadership across GM's B2B and emerging B2C integration landscape. You will be expected to challenge the status quo and help GM shape the future of digital business connectivity with our trading and technology partners, including how the B2B network can be expanded to support broader supply chain collaboration use cases.
What You'll Do
  • Support EDI operations, modernization, process automation, and technical thought leadership initiatives across GM's B2B and emerging B2C integration ecosystem.
  • Support supplier and customer onboarding, trading partner escalations, plant and product launches, and ongoing production operations.
  • Design and support B2B solutions using APIs and traditional formats of ANSI X.12, UN/EDIFACT, RND, VDA, and related standards.
  • Translate business requirements into transaction-set design, mapping logic, API-enabled integration patterns, and scalable support models
  • Partner with enterprise business teams to align technical solutions with operational outcomes.
  • Work closely with internal teams, external trading partners, and SaaS vendors to define requirements, shape solution direction, and cultivate durable technical and operational partnerships.
  • Manage and improve end-to-end EDI data flows, monitor, handle exceptions, analyze root cause, and production support.
  • Document specifications, mapping rules, business processes, technical processes, and support procedures.
  • Apply ERP/MRP knowledge to ensure EDI data is correctly integrated into upstream and downstream business workflows.
  • Drive innovation in AI-assisted operations, intelligent mapping, automated issue detection and self-healing, and business process automation.
  • Influence long-term roadmaps, continuous improvement, standardization, and technical mentoring across the team.

What Success Looks Like
  • Reliable and secure movement of business documents across GM's supply chain and commercial ecosystems that enables the building, transporting, delivery and servicing GM vehicles worldwide.
  • Outstanding customer service with every stakeholder interaction.
  • Well-defined, supportable, and scalable EDI and API integration solutions.
  • Faster B2B onboarding and smoother support for suppliers, customers, plants, and business units.
  • Improved business alignment between technical design, transaction standards, and operational outcomes.
  • Fresh thinking that advances GM's B2B and B2C integration capabilities beyond traditional ways of working.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
  • Bachelor's degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Engineering, Supply Chain, Business Technology, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Significant experience in EDI, B2B and/or B2C integration, systems engineering, systems analysis, or enterprise application integration.
  • Experience delivering and supporting production solutions with cross-functional business and technical stakeholders.
  • Deep experience in EDI analysis, design, implementation, and support in complex enterprise environments.
  • Experience with API development, modern integration patterns, and AI-enabled automation opportunities.
  • Strong working knowledge of ANSI X.12, UN/EDIFACT, RND, VDA, and common manufacturing, retail, and financial transaction sets such as DELFOR (830), DELJIT (862), DESADV (856), ORDERS (850), INVOIC (810), REMADV (820), and INVRPT (846).
  • Strong understanding of the business processes and data flows underlying supplier and customer schedules, releases, shipments, orders, invoices, remittance, and inventory reporting.
  • Experience translating business requirements into transaction-set design, mapping rules, integration logic, and supportable technical solutions.
  • High-level understanding of ERP/MRP concepts and how enterprise applications consume, validate, and act on EDI data.
  • Experience with EDI translation platforms, data validation, exception handling, and trading partner implementation practices.
  • Experience partnering with SaaS vendors at a technical level to govern requirements, influence roadmaps, resolve incidents, and build strong working solutions and relationships.
  • Strong systems analysis, troubleshooting, communication, and analytical problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to operate in ambiguity, prototype where needed, and mature solutions into stable enterprise capabilities.

What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)
  • Experience in automotive, manufacturing, supply chain, logistics, purchasing, finance, or retail sales domains.
  • Experience with SAP or other major ERP ecosystems.
  • Experience modernizing legacy B2B platforms through standardization, automation, analytics, and emerging integration approaches.
