What is set design?

Set design is the process of creating the physical surroundings in which a film, television show, theater production, or other performance takes place. Set designers are responsible for conceptualizing and building the scenery, backdrops, and props that help bring a script to life and establish the mood and setting. Their work involves collaborating with directors, producers, and other designers to ensure the visual environment supports the story and artistic vision. Set design combines creativity, technical skills, and a strong understanding of architecture and spatial planning.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Set Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Set Designer, you need a solid background in art, architecture, or theater design, often supported by a relevant degree or portfolio of work. Expertise with design software such as AutoCAD, SketchUp, and Adobe Creative Suite, as well as familiarity with construction methods and materials, is crucial. Creativity, collaboration, and strong communication skills help Set Designers interpret scripts and work effectively with directors and production teams. These abilities ensure that visual environments enhance storytelling and meet both aesthetic and practical production needs.

What is the difference between Set Design vs Scenic Painting?

AspectSet DesignScenic Painting
Primary RoleConceptualizing and designing the overall look of a setApplying paint and finishes to create textures and visual effects on set pieces
Skills NeededDesign, drafting, spatial planning, creativityPainting techniques, color theory, craftsmanship
Work EnvironmentDesign studios, theaters, film setsWorkshop, on-location, studio
Common CredentialsDesign degree or related experienceArt or scenic painting experience, portfolio

Set Design involves creating the overall visual concept and layout of a scene, while Scenic Painting focuses on bringing that vision to life through painting and finishing techniques. Both roles are essential in production, often working closely together, but they require different skill sets and responsibilities.

How does a Set Designer typically collaborate with directors and other creative departments during a production?

Set Designers work closely with directors to understand the vision and mood of the production, ensuring the set supports storytelling and character development. They also coordinate with departments such as lighting, props, and costume to ensure all design elements are cohesive and technically feasible. Regular meetings and design presentations help align everyone’s efforts and resolve any logistical challenges early in the process. This collaborative approach is crucial for creating immersive and functional environments on stage or screen.

Job description

Do you want to make your mark on a new and exciting brand developing clean, reliable, and abundant fusion energy that will revolutionize how we power the future? We're looking for a talented Graphic Design Intern with the skills and passion for crafting exciting and visually stunning designs. This internship offers hands-on opportunities to work on real projects while further developing your design skills in a professional environment.

About the Role

As a Graphic Design Intern, you'll work directly with our Head of External Affairs and CEO to help us think through our existing visual identify and how we present ourselves to our audiences, stress-test what's working and what's not, advocate for necessary and impactful design changes that push our identity forward, and develop compelling visual products across multiple platforms that better reflect our identity and scale as we grow as a business.

What You'll Do

You'll design and iterate on brand identity elements including logos, color palettes, typography systems, and visual guidelines. You'll create marketing materials such as social media graphics, presentations, print collateral, and digital assets that align with established brand standards. You'll assist in developing mood boards, design concepts, and presentations for client or stakeholder meetings. You'll also help maintain and organize our digital asset library and contribute to team brainstorming sessions and creative critiques.

What We're Looking For

You should have demonstrated experience developing branding and visual identity projects, whether through coursework, freelance work, or previous internships. Expert-level proficiency in the Adobe Creative Cloud suite of products is essential, particularly Illustrator, Photoshop, Lightroom, and InDesign, as well as experience in generative AI tools and workflows (eg. Midjourney, Magic Studio, Firefly). Familiarity with additional Adobe tools like Premiere and After Effects is a plus. You should have a strong portfolio showcasing your branding work and visual identity projects, with a keen eye for typography, color theory, and composition. We're looking for someone who can work both independently and collaboratively, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and communicate design concepts clearly. You should be receptive to feedback and eager to learn and grow as a designer.

Logistics

  • Immediate availability.
  • This is a paid, part-time position with no set end date. Duration will be based on the balance of our continued business needs and your availability and goals.
  • 1-2 days per week expected during the semester, with the opportunity to expand to additional hours during the summer as needed.
  • In-office work requirement. Duties will be performed at Realta Fusion offices in Madison, WI.

Application Requirements

  • Resume
  • Cover letter
  • Portfolio/work samples

Applicants who do not meet the entire job specification are encouraged to apply.
