Set Design Assistant information

What is a set design assistant?

Set Design Assistants are professionals who support set designers and production teams in creating the physical environments for film, television, theater, or events. Their responsibilities include helping with research, sourcing materials, creating models or sketches, and assisting with the construction and dressing of sets. They play a key role in ensuring sets meet the creative vision and practical needs of a production, often working closely with various departments and under tight deadlines.

What are some common challenges faced by a set design assistant and how can they be effectively managed?

Set Design Assistants often encounter tight deadlines and rapidly changing design requirements, which can make managing tasks and communication challenging. To succeed, it's important to stay highly organized, regularly communicate with the set designer and other team members, and be adaptable to last-minute changes. Proactively seeking clarification on assignments and maintaining detailed notes can help ensure that the designer's vision is accurately realized. Building strong working relationships with the construction and props teams also supports smoother workflow and problem-solving on set.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a set design assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Set Design Assistant, you need a solid grounding in art, design principles, and spatial awareness, often supported by a degree in theatre design or a related field. Familiarity with design software such as AutoCAD, SketchUp, and Adobe Creative Suite, as well as basic model-making and drafting skills, is typically required. Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving abilities help you collaborate effectively with designers, directors, and production crews. These skills ensure that creative visions are translated accurately and efficiently into practical, visually compelling sets that support the production.

What is the difference between Set Design Assistant vs Set Designer?

AspectSet Design AssistantSet Designer
CredentialsRelevant education in theater, design, or architecture; often entry-levelAdvanced education or extensive experience in set design
Work EnvironmentAssist in creating and organizing set elements, working under supervisionLead the design process, responsible for overall concept and execution
Industry UsageCommonly employed in theater, film, and TV productions as support staffPrimary role in designing and planning sets for productions

The Set Design Assistant typically supports the Set Designer by handling tasks like research, sourcing materials, and preparing set pieces. The Set Designer takes the lead in conceptualizing and creating the overall set design. Both roles are essential in production, but the Assistant focuses on execution and support, while the Designer is responsible for the creative vision.

How to get into set design assistant with no experience?

To become a set design assistant, gaining relevant skills such as knowledge of design software like SketchUp or AutoCAD, and understanding of construction and materials, is helpful. Entry-level candidates often start by volunteering or interning on film, theater, or television productions to build experience and industry connections. Developing a portfolio of design ideas and demonstrating strong organizational and communication skills can also improve chances of entry into the field.

Job description

Please read full job description before applying. This is an in-office role.

Revolution Events designs and creates a wide range of engaging displays, environments, and experiential event productions for corporate, social, national nonprofit, and other organizations throughout the DMV and across the nation.

Revolution Events is seeking a well-rounded 3D Rendering & Graphic Design Artist with strong experience in both 3D visualization and 2D graphic design. The ideal candidate is a creative thinker who can take a concept, client vision, or event brief and translate it into compelling visual designs and realistic 3D environments.

This role is ideal for a designer who enjoys working at the intersection of event design, scenic design, graphic design, and physical fabrication. Candidates with backgrounds in corporate event design, experiential design, theatrical scenic/set design, architecture, interior design, or related creative disciplines are encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate will be passionate about design, have a warm and collaborative personality, enjoy learning, and be excited to contribute to a growing creative team. This position reports to the Fabrication Director and will work closely with event producers, fabrication staff, vendors, and other members of the creative team.

Major Responsibilities

  • Create detailed 3D event renderings and visualizations that illustrate the overall event environment, including venue architecture, décor, furniture, stages, scenic elements, set designs, lighting, branding, and other event components.
  • Develop creative concepts and spatial layouts in collaboration with event producers and other members of the design team.
  • Translate client concepts, event briefs, and producer direction into polished, presentation-ready 3D renderings and design concepts.
  • Develop scenic and environmental designs that consider scale, proportion, sightlines, spatial relationships, materials, and real-world construction considerations.
  • Create event graphics, environmental graphics, signage, branding elements, and other visual assets.
  • Prepare accurate, print-ready files for printers and production vendors.
  • Collaborate with the fabrication team to ensure designs can be effectively translated from renderings into physical scenic builds, installations, and event environments.
  • Assist with the development of design presentations and client-facing visual materials.
  • Work within established project timelines and manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Communicate effectively with producers, fabricators, vendors, and other internal team members throughout the design and production process.

The Ideal Candidate Will Excel in the Following Areas

  • Creative Problem Solving: Able to take an initial concept and develop creative, practical, and visually compelling design solutions.
  • Spatial Thinking: Able to visualize how a design will function within a physical environment and understand scale, proportion, sightlines, and spatial relationships.
  • Attention to Detail: Produces polished, accurate work while maintaining awareness of both aesthetic and practical considerations.
  • Collaboration: Comfortable working closely with producers, fabricators, vendors, and other creative professionals.
  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to articulate design concepts and respond constructively to feedback.
  • Organization: Self-motivated, organized, task-oriented, and capable of managing multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Adaptability: Comfortable working in a fast-paced event environment where priorities and project requirements may change.
  • Initiative: Able to work independently with minimal daily direction while knowing when to ask questions, seek feedback, or collaborate with others.
  • Creative Curiosity: Open-minded and willing to explore new ideas, techniques, materials, and approaches to design.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years of professional experience in event design, scenic/set design, experiential design, graphic design, architectural visualization, interior design, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience designing for corporate events, experiential environments, branded activations, social/digital media, and/or theatrical productions.
  • Intermediate proficiency in SketchUp or Vectorworks with the ability to create and modify 3D environments, event layouts, scenic elements, and presentation renderings.
  • Strong 3D modeling and rendering skills, including an understanding of lighting, textures, materials, scale, and realistic spatial visualization.
  • Advanced proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, particularly Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign.
  • Strong understanding of graphic design principles including composition, typography, color, branding, and visual hierarchy.
  • Ability to develop designs that are not only visually compelling but also consider fabrication, construction, materials, installation, and real-world execution.
  • Experience working with or designing scenic elements, sets, stages, branded environments, or physical installations is highly valued.
  • Ability to interpret architectural drawings, floor plans, venue layouts, or other technical documentation is a plus.
  • Experience working in an event production, fabrication, theater, architectural, or experiential design environment is strongly preferred.

What We Are Looking For

We are particularly interested in candidates who can bridge the gap between creative design and physical production. The ideal candidate understands that a great rendering is more than a beautiful image—it should communicate how an environment will actually look, feel, and function when it is built.

Candidates coming from theatrical scenic/set design may be especially well suited to this role, as will candidates with experience in event production, experiential design, architecture, interior design, or environmental graphics.

Portfolio Requirements

Interested candidates should submit a resume along with a portfolio demonstrating both 3D and 2D design capabilities.

Portfolios should include examples of work such as:

  • 3D event or environmental renderings
  • Scenic or set designs
  • Corporate or experiential event designs
  • Spatial layouts or floor plans
  • Graphic design and branding
  • Environmental graphics or signage
  • Presentation graphics
  • Examples demonstrating the progression from concept to final design, when available

All resumes and portfolios will be reviewed, and candidates whose qualifications align with the position will be contacted.
