Job description

BluePath Service Dogs is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to providing autism service dogs that offer safety, companionship, and opportunities for greater independence. Through a mission-driven approach, BluePath trains and places service dogs with children and families affected by autism, helping to ease parents’ safety concerns and empower children to lead fuller, more connected lives.

In this role, the Service Dog Trainer is responsible for developing service dogs for successful placement, while also supporting the broader program through volunteer mentorship, training coordination, and operational support. This position combines hands-on canine training with program involvement, ensuring each dog progresses to meet the highest standards while contributing to the overall success of BluePath’s mission.

Primary Responsibilities

Service Dog Training & Development

  • Prepare assigned dogs for placement with families, ensuring readiness in accordance with ADI standards
  • Train dogs across a variety of environments, including schools, camps, and other settings involving children with special needs
  • Provide guidance and instruction to volunteer puppy raisers and sitters, including regular travel (up to ~25%) to support raisers in remote regions. Travel may include independent trips, overnight stays, and multi-day visits.
  • Evaluate dogs throughout training, develop improvement plans, and recommend career changes when necessary
  • Support routine care, health maintenance, and overall condition of dogs in training

Program Coordination & Support

  • Assist in scheduling veterinary visits and appointments
  • Maintain clear, accurate, and up-to-date records of each dog’s progress and achievements
  • Collaborate with team members to ensure consistency and alignment across training efforts

Additional Responsibilities

  • Represent BluePath in public relations, education, and outreach efforts through presentations and demonstrations
  • Perform additional duties as needed to support the organization’s mission
  • Work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as required

Qualifications & Experience

  • Completion of a formal service dog training apprenticeship or equivalent program
  • At least three years of hands-on experience strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated experience assessing canine health, temperament, and behavior, including training, behavior modification, and placement
  • Experience working with volunteers, with the ability to train, mentor, and foster their development in a supportive environment
  • Must be comfortable traveling independently, including overnight and multi-day trips, and able to drive or fly to remote regions.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Animal Behavior, Psychology, Education, or a related field preferred

Skills & Competencies

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with strong attention to detail
  • Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively
  • Sound judgment and the ability to think critically and respond confidently in dynamic situations
  • Strong team player with the ability to collaborate and build positive working relationships
  • Self-driven, dependable, and adaptable in a fast-paced, evolving environment
  • Professional, approachable, and positive in all interactions

Physical & Technical Requirements

  • Able to safely handle and work with large, active dogs throughout the day
  • Capable of walking several miles daily in a variety of weather conditions
  • Comfortable using Microsoft Office and basic computer systems
  • Valid driver’s license required
  • Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a background check.

This is a full-time, Monday - Friday position based in Carmel, NY. Salary $60,000 - 70,000, commensurate with experience. Competitive benefits and vacation package included.
