POSITION SUMMARY
The Corporal supervises the performance of police personnel under their command as assigned by the Sergeant. They are responsible for overseeing, organizing, training, and directing the activities of assigned SROs (School Resource Officers), AROs (Alarm Response Officers), and equipment as instructed by the Sergeant. The Police Corporal is distinguished from the Police Officer by its focus on shift leadership, coordination, and oversight of officers. It acts in the stead of a supervisor as needed and performs internal inquiries/investigations as directed.
 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Associate degree in criminal justice, public safety, or related field required
Bachelor's or Master's degree in criminal justice, public safety, or related field preferred
*Additional years of equivalent professional experience may be considered in lieu of the degree requirement

Certifications/Licenses:
Valid Georgia driver's license is required.
Meet and maintain Georgia Police Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) certification
Georgia Crime Information Center (GCIC) certification preferred
POST Certified General, Senior or Master Instructor preferred
Supervision/Management, Intermediate and Advanced Certification preferred
Must acquire Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council Field Training Officer (FTO) certification within 12 months of appointment

Experience:
4 years of experience in law enforcement required
2 years experience with Atlanta Public Schools Police Department (APSPD) or another school police department preferred

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Must be able to perform all duties and responsibilities of a School Resource Officer (SRO) or Alarm Response Officer (ARO)
Acts as a role model, mentor, trainer, and provides direct supervision of assigned School Resource Officers
Prepares annual performance appraisals and performance work plans outlining goals and expected outcomes for assigned SROs
Serves on the School Safety and Security leadership team
Serves as an advisor to Sergeants and assists with staff training opportunities
Oversees compliance with strategies, goals, and directives established by the Office of Safety and Security
Reports all complaints, issues, or concerns to the Chief of Police or designee
Works with principals, administrators, and other school personnel regarding juvenile and adult offenses and uses restorative practices when appropriate
Enforces Board policies and rules, state and local laws, and departmental standard operating procedures, taking appropriate action when violations are reported or observed
Completes reports and required documentation in a clear, concise, and timely manner
Maintains assigned equipment and professional appearance and complies with departmental and district rules and regulations
Serves in the absence of the Sergeant when no Sergeant is on duty or assigned to a shift, assuming the responsibilities and authority of the Sergeant as required
Required to have prompt, regular attendance in person and be available to work on-site during regular business hours and as needed
Performs other duties as assigned by the appropriate administrator or their representative

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
Knowledge of supervisory principles, responsibilities, and practices
Knowledge of current computer systems, software applications, and law enforcement technology relevant to assigned responsibilities
Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws; constitutional guidelines; Board policies; departmental directives; and law enforcement policies, procedures, and standard operating practices
Knowledge of criminal and civil law, the Georgia Criminal Code, Juvenile Court Code, and basic law enforcement principles
Knowledge of safety, security, emergency response, and behavior management practices
Skill in conducting interviews and interrogations
Skill in the safe and effective use of firearms and other law enforcement equipment
Ability to respond rapidly and effectively in emergency situations while exercising sound judgment
Ability to investigate suspicious activities, persons, vehicles, incidents, and criminal offenses
Ability to exercise independent judgment and make sound decisions in routine and emergency situations
Ability to plan, organize, prioritize, and manage multiple assignments effectively
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with administrators, staff, students, parents, law enforcement agencies, and community partners
Strong critical thinking, interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism when handling sensitive information
Ability to maintain all certifications required by departmental procedures and state law
Ability to work flexible schedules, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and emergency call-outs

Salary Range:  Salary Schedules - Atlanta Public Schools

Work Year: 261-DAY (ANNUAL)
