Sensor Scientist information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a sensor scientist, and why are they important?

A Sensor Scientist typically needs a solid background in physics, chemistry, or engineering, along with experience in sensor design, data analysis, and a relevant advanced degree. Familiarity with analytical tools, simulation software, and laboratory instrumentation is crucial, and certifications in areas like instrumentation or materials science can be advantageous. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills for excelling in this field. These competencies enable Sensor Scientists to innovate, accurately interpret sensor data, and collaborate effectively across multidisciplinary teams.

What are some common challenges sensor scientists face when developing new sensor technologies?

Sensor Scientists often encounter challenges such as ensuring sensitivity and accuracy of new sensors while maintaining cost-effectiveness and scalability for manufacturing. Integrating sensors with existing hardware and software platforms can also be complex, requiring close collaboration with engineers and data scientists. Additionally, staying up-to-date with rapidly evolving materials and technology standards is crucial, as is navigating regulatory requirements for safety and environmental impact.

What is a sensor scientist?

Sensor Scientists are professionals who research, design, develop, and test sensors used to detect and measure physical properties such as temperature, pressure, motion, light, or chemical composition. They work in a variety of industries including electronics, automotive, environmental monitoring, healthcare, and manufacturing. Sensor Scientists often collaborate with engineers to improve existing sensor technology or create new types of sensors for specialized applications. Their work involves both theoretical analysis and hands-on experimentation to enhance sensor performance, reliability, and integration into systems.

What is the difference between Sensor Scientist vs Sensor Engineer?

AspectSensor ScientistSensor Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires a master's or Ph.D. in physics, chemistry, or materials scienceUsually holds a bachelor's or master's in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or related fields
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, academic institutions, or R&D departmentsManufacturing facilities, product development teams, or engineering firms
Primary FocusDeveloping new sensor materials and understanding sensor phenomenaDesigning, testing, and implementing sensor systems for practical applications
Industry UsageResearch and development, academia, specialized industriesElectronics, automotive, aerospace, consumer devices

Sensor Scientists focus on researching and developing new sensor materials and understanding sensor behavior, often working in labs or academic settings. Sensor Engineers apply this knowledge to design and implement sensor systems in real-world products and applications. While both roles require technical expertise, their work environments and primary objectives differ.

ABOUT THE TEAM
Anduril Atlanta Supply Chain team is seeking a Business Process Engineer to join our team. The Supply Chain Team is responsible for leading complex end-to-end initiatives, managing cross-functional projects, establishing and optimizing cutting-edge processes.
The right person for this role can demonstrate holistic ownership on documenting and solving technical challenges paired with deploying actionable initiatives and a creative set of solutions to drive an end-to-end operating structure built to stick in a fast-paced, resource-limited environment that enables the Atlanta site teams to produce at scale. Socialize the business process and accompanying resources with cross-functional teams, including Manufacturing Engineering, Manufacturing Operations, Supply Chain, Program Management, Configuration Management, Quality, and more.
  • Guide teams through the rollout process and implementation for their specific area of responsibility, establish and document current workflows, identify process execution bottlenecks, track progress, and design/facilitate future-state operational models.
  • Communicate the importance of business process design and how it contributes to production success to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. Identify and support tailored communication strategies to match stakeholder interests.
  • Articulate process flow readiness to cross-functional audiences. Create and maintain Lucid/Visio visualizations that synthesize information to highlight risks and escalate them to leadership.
  • Facilitate process phase gate evaluations alongside teams. Shape presentation/process flow content and guide messaging to cross-functional stakeholders. Provide feedback on best practices and lessons learned to help define what good looks like.
  • Foster adoption and make business processes and frameworks actionable by recommending tactical resources to implement them.
  • Build relationships and influence change. Collaborate closely with engineers, technicians, and program managers to deeply understand their pain points, needs, and workflows. Be a business process engineering support pillar, advocating for decisions and actions in the best interest of the team.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelors Degree in fields such as business, engineering, math, or sciences.
  • 3+ years of experience in manufacturing engineering, manufacturing operations, industrial engineering, change management, project management, program management, or engineering transformation
  • Strong business acumen together with knowledge of hardware and manufacturing domains.
  • Ability to collaborate and influence across all levels and disciplines (individual contributor to senior leadership, Program Management to Supply Chain to Design Engineering, etc.).
  • Process thinker with a business impact mindset. A desire to learn new things without fear of jumping in.
  • U.S. Person status is required as this position needs to access export controlled data.
  • Eligible to obtain and maintain an active U.S. Secret security clearance
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Proven ability to guide cross-functional teams through structural upgrades and coaching teams on continuous improvement.
  • Experience with large scale organizational change and process adoption.
