What does a sensor algorithm engineer do?

A Sensor Algorithm Engineer designs, develops, and tests algorithms that process data from various sensors, such as cameras, accelerometers, gyroscopes, or environmental sensors. Their work involves creating mathematical models and software to interpret sensor data for applications like robotics, autonomous vehicles, mobile devices, or IoT systems. They collaborate with hardware engineers and software developers to ensure accurate and reliable sensor performance. The role often requires expertise in signal processing, machine learning, and embedded systems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a sensor algorithm engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Sensor Algorithm Engineer, you need a strong background in signal processing, sensor physics, and applied mathematics, often supported by a degree in electrical engineering, computer science, or a related field. Familiarity with programming languages such as Python or C++, tools like MATLAB, and experience with sensor data fusion systems are typically required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication skills help you collaborate across multidisciplinary teams and interpret complex data. These skills are essential to develop robust algorithms that ensure accurate sensor performance and drive innovation in fields like automotive, robotics, and consumer electronics.

How does a sensor algorithm engineer typically collaborate with hardware and software teams during product development?

Sensor Algorithm Engineers often serve as a bridge between hardware engineers and software developers. They work closely with hardware teams to understand sensor specifications and limitations while collaborating with software teams to integrate algorithms into embedded systems or applications. Regular cross-disciplinary meetings and iterative testing are common, ensuring that sensor data is accurately interpreted and that the algorithms perform reliably under real-world conditions. This collaborative environment helps drive innovation and ensures that final products meet both technical and user requirements.

What is the difference between Sensor Algorithm Engineer vs Signal Processing Engineer?

AspectSensor Algorithm EngineerSignal Processing Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related fields; knowledge of sensor systemsBachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related fields; expertise in signal processing techniques
Work EnvironmentDevelops algorithms for sensors in automotive, consumer electronics, or industrial applicationsDesigns and implements signal processing algorithms across various industries including communications and audio
Employer & Industry UsageUsed by companies developing sensor-based systems like IoT devices, autonomous vehicles, and roboticsCommon in telecommunications, audio engineering, and image processing sectors

While both roles involve algorithm development and require similar educational backgrounds, Sensor Algorithm Engineers focus on creating algorithms specifically for sensor data interpretation, whereas Signal Processing Engineers work on processing signals from various sources, including sensors, for broader applications.

Job description

About Us

ZeroMark builds AI-driven counter-drone systems that actually work in combat. No PowerPoints. No hype. Just fieldโ€‘proven technology that saves lives. Weโ€™ve doubled year-over-year for two straight years, winning contracts that prove what weโ€™ve always known: real innovation happens in the dirt, not in conference rooms. Our systems transform standard weapons into AIโ€‘powered platforms that detect, track, and neutralize drone threatsโ€”because a $200 drone shouldnโ€™t require a millionโ€‘dollar countermeasure.

Hereโ€™s what makes us different: ZeroMark operators donโ€™t build from behind screens. Youโ€™ll validate tech from Blackhawk helicopters, train alongside Tierโ€‘1 units (who happen to be our coworkers), and test at legendary ranges from White Sands to the cliffs of Hawaii. When we say fieldโ€‘tested, we mean youโ€™ll shoot it, fly with it, and push it to failure. We donโ€™t tweet about changing the worldโ€”weโ€™re too busy actually doing it. Watch us in action here. Dark humor required, thick skin recommended.

If you want to make an actual impactโ€”and have some unforgettable Tuesday afternoons along the wayโ€”letโ€™s talk. Weโ€™re all about delivering practical, fieldโ€‘tested tech, not just theories.

What Youโ€™ll Do

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Mechatronics Engineer with a specialization in robotics to join our dynamic team. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in the design, development, and integration of complex robotic systems, with a proven track record in robotics, electronics, and software. This role will be pivotal in bringing our next generation of defenseโ€‘focused robotic platforms from concept to deployment.

  • Lead the design, development, and testing of advanced robotic systems, focusing on mechanical, electrical, and software integration.

  • Develop robust control algorithms and implement them on embedded systems.

  • Design and prototype custom electronic circuits and PCBs for robotic applications.

  • Conduct thorough systemโ€‘level testing, validation, and verification of robotic platforms.

  • Collaborate closely with crossโ€‘functional teams, including mechanical, electrical, software, and systems engineers.

  • Contribute to all phases of the product development lifecycle, from concept generation to production and deployment.

  • Troubleshoot complex technical issues and implement effective solutions.

  • Stay updated with the latest advancements in robotics, mechatronics, electronics, and software technologies.

  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to a culture of continuous learning and improvement.

What Youโ€™ll Need
  • Bachelorโ€™s or Masterโ€™s degree in Mechatronics Engineering, Robotics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.

  • 8+ years of professional experience in robotics or mechatronics engineering, with a strong focus on handsโ€‘on development.

  • Proven expertise in robotic system design, including kinematics, dynamics, and control.

  • Strong proficiency in embedded systems programming (C/C++, Python) for realโ€‘time applications.

  • Extensive experience with electronic circuit design, simulation, and PCB layout (e.g., Altium Designer, Eagle, KiCad).

  • Solid understanding of sensor integration, signal processing, and data acquisition.

  • Experience with various communication protocols (e.g., CAN, Ethernet, UART, I2C, SPI).

  • Familiarity with robotic operating systems (ROS) or similar middleware.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.

  • Excellent problemโ€‘solving skills and attention to detail.
