Job Summary
Battelle's Advanced Microsystems Solutions (AMS) organization is seeking a Software Engineer to support the development of next-generation Radio Frequency (RF) and Spectrum Operations solutions. This role will focus on designing and developing software applications, signal processing algorithms, and mission systems that enable customers to sense, analyze, exploit, and operate within contested electromagnetic environments.
The successful candidate will work within multidisciplinary teams of software engineers, RF engineers, systems engineers, data scientists, and researchers to develop innovative capabilities supporting spectrum awareness, signal intelligence, communications resilience, electronic attack, and electronic support missions. The engineer will contribute throughout the full lifecycle, from concept development and prototyping through integration, testing, deployment, and customer transition
Responsibilities
Software Development for RF & Spectrum Systems
  • Design, develop, test, and maintain software applications supporting advanced RF, communications, and spectrum operations systems.
  • Develop scalable software architectures for real-time signal processing and mission applications.
  • Design and implement APIs, services, and data-processing pipelines that support sensor integration and spectrum exploitation workflows.
  • Develop software utilizing modern software engineering practices, DevSecOps methodologies, and Agile development frameworks.

Signal Processing & Algorithm Development
  • Develop and optimize digital signal processing algorithms for: Signal detection and classification, Modulation and demodulation, Direction finding and geolocation, Spectrum monitoring and analysis, Waveform processing, Interference mitigation
  • Implement algorithms using C++, Python, and other high-performance programming languages.
  • Evaluate algorithm performance utilizing both simulated and operational datasets.

Software Defined Radio (SDR) & RF Integration
  • Develop software applications supporting software-defined radio platforms and RF sensor systems.
  • Interface software with RF front ends, communications systems, phased-array systems, and embedded processing hardware.
  • Integrate third-party and custom RF technologies into mission systems.
  • Support laboratory and field testing activities to validate system performance.

Spectrum Operations & Electronic Warfare
  • Develop software supporting electromagnetic spectrum awareness and spectrum management capabilities.
  • Contribute to solutions supporting electronic support, electronic attack, and electronic protection missions.
  • Create tools for visualization, analysis, and operational decision support within complex RF environments.
  • Support mission planning, execution, and analysis workflows for spectrum operations.

System Engineering & Technical Leadership
  • Participate in system architecture development, trade studies, and design reviews.
  • Collaborate with customers and program teams to translate operational requirements into technical solutions.
  • Support proposal development, technology roadmaps, and business growth activities.

Key Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related discipline.
  • 5+ years of relevant experience developing software for complex technical systems.
  • Proficiency in one or more of the following: C++, Python, Java, Rust
  • Experience developing software in Linux environments.
  • Understanding of: RF communications systems, Digital signal processing, Wireless networking, Electromagnetic spectrum concepts
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government security clearance.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Active Secret or Top Secret security clearance.
  • Experience with: GNU Radio, Redhawk, MATLAB/Simulink, Kubernetes, Docker, Cloud-native architectures
  • Familiarity with: RF modeling and simulation, Electronic Warfare systems, SIGINT systems, Spectrum monitoring technologies, RF testing and instrumentation
  • Experience with software-defined radio platforms such as: Ettus USRP, NI SDR, Per Vices, Custom SDR hardware
  • Knowledge of phased-array systems, beamforming, and advanced sensing technologies.
  • Experience integrating AI/ML techniques into RF and signal-processing applications.

Compensation Data
Battelle is committed to fair and equitable compensation practices. The salary range for this role is $135,000 - $175,000 per year, in addition to our comprehensive benefits package. A candidate's salary is determined by various factors, including but not limited to education, relevant work experience, skills, and certifications. Salary ranges may vary based on geographic location and market conditions.
