Job description

Crawford, Murphy & Tilly is seeking a Sr. Transportation Engineer to join the Surface Transportation team. This is not a remote position.


We are a fast-growing firm with 500+ employees across 25 offices in 10 states, serving clients through our four primary business groups:

As a Senior Transportation Engineer, you'll play a key role in supporting the Springfield, IL Surface Transportation team while working out of CMT's Edwardsville, IL location. This position offers the opportunity to experience new challenges in a dynamic environment. Join us and help shape the future of engineering and consulting.

Hereโ€™s what youโ€™ll do:

  • Lead conventional and moderate to complex transportation projects
  • Coordinate multi-disciplinary project teams and ensure successful delivery
  • Undertake a leadership role in staff development in our Springfield, Illinois operations
  • Project development and pursuit of surface transportation-related work


Here is what youโ€™ll need:

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in civil engineering, or related field
  • 4 years' experience minimum with an emphasis in roadway/highway geometric design, drainage, transportation planning, traffic engineering and corridor studies is desired
  • Registered Professional Engineer in any state, or the ability to gain licensure in Illinois within one year
  • Strong preference will be given to those with not only a technical understanding of delivering highway engineering projects but those that possess a complete understanding of delivering a quality and comprehensive product, program, or solution for our surface transportation clients
  • Demonstrated skills and working knowledge of MicroStation and Open Roads Designer software
  • Strong technical, written, and oral communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal and active listening skills
  • Strong attention to detail and thoroughness in completing tasks
  • Ability to work and lead in a team environment while mentoring staff
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments on a variety of projects, work in an environment to learn quickly, take initiative and interact with a variety of people located in northern Illinois and other CMT offices
  • Strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills to identify issues, evaluate options, and implement solutions
  • Demonstrated responsiveness, professionalism, and teamwork

Ideally, you will also have:

  • Previous leadership experience
  • Geometric design, drainage, transportation planning, traffic engineering/corridor studies, project management with IDOT is desired
  • Experience in business development and staff supervision
  • Willingness to travel as needed
  • Valid driverโ€™s license and acceptable driving record

The expected compensation range for this position is $80,000 - $110,000 annually. The final agreed-upon compensation is based on numerous factors, including but not limited to individual education, qualifications, prior work experience, and geographic location.
