What does a senior validation engineer do?

A Senior Validation Engineer is responsible for ensuring that products, systems, or processes meet regulatory standards and function as intended. They develop and execute validation protocols, analyze test data, and document results to confirm compliance with industry and company standards. Senior Validation Engineers often lead validation projects, collaborate with cross-functional teams, and mentor junior staff. Their work is critical in industries like pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, and manufacturing, where product safety and efficacy are essential.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior validation engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Validation Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering, quality assurance, and regulatory compliance, typically supported by a relevant degree and experience in validation within regulated industries. Familiarity with validation protocols (IQ, OQ, PQ), statistical analysis tools, and systems like FDA 21 CFR Part 11 is crucial. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help ensure successful project outcomes and cross-functional collaboration. These skills and qualifications are essential to maintain product quality, meet regulatory standards, and drive continuous improvement.

What are some typical challenges faced by senior validation engineers when leading validation projects?

Senior Validation Engineers often encounter challenges such as managing tight project timelines, ensuring compliance with evolving regulatory standards, and coordinating cross-functional teams. Balancing the needs of production, quality assurance, and regulatory affairs requires strong communication and project management skills. Additionally, troubleshooting unexpected validation failures and documenting results thoroughly are key aspects that demand both technical expertise and attention to detail.

What is the difference between Senior Validation Engineer vs Validation Specialist?

AspectSenior Validation EngineerValidation Specialist
CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Engineering, Life Sciences, or related fields; often with certifications like GxP or CSVSimilar educational background; certifications like GxP or CSV are common
Work EnvironmentDesigns and oversees validation protocols in manufacturing, biotech, or pharmaceutical settingsExecutes validation tasks, tests, and documentation in similar environments
Employer & IndustryPharmaceutical, biotech, medical device companiesSame industries, often working under validation teams

Description

Based in the Calgary Downtown Office, the Sr. Engineer, Hydraulics reports to the Manager, Systems Planning & Reliability. As a key member of a high-performing team, this role leads steady-state and transient hydraulic modelling activities that support pipeline development, facility design, operations, and system optimization across the business.

The Sr. Engineer, Hydraulics tackles complex hydraulic challenges and provides practical recommendations related to system capacity, operating limits, pump selection, control setpoints, and overall system performance. Working closely with multidisciplinary teams from early-stage development studies through detailed transient analysis and optimization initiatives, this role contributes to critical business decisions while mentoring developing engineers and advancing the team's hydraulic modelling capabilities.

This is an exciting opportunity to help foster a collaborative, growth-oriented culture and make a meaningful impact on Inter Pipelines long-term success.

Key Activities and Responsibilities

Provide senior-level technical expertise in liquid pipeline hydraulics, including steady-state and transient analysis, pump and pipeline design, and operational support.
Conduct hydraulic assessments for pipeline expansions, new facilities, and system modifications, including pipeline sizing, pump station siting, preliminary pump selection, and evaluation of operating configurations.
Work with Commercial, Project Development, and Project teams to develop and compare early-stage design options, applying practical assumptions and fit-for-purpose analysis as requirements evolve.
Develop, maintain, benchmark, and validate hydraulic models using operational SCADA data and considering operating practices, volume requirements, fluid properties, and temperature effects.
Perform transient and surge assessments and develop overpressure protection strategies, including surge relief, high-pressure shutdowns, valve closure times, and control system logic.
Develop and maintain pressure restrictions and pump station shutdown setpoints, including their technical basis and supporting documentation, in coordination with Pipeline Integrity, Operations Engineering, the Control Centre, and Field Operations.
Troubleshoot hydraulic performance and control issues affecting pump stations, terminals, and pipeline operations.
Provide technical expertise related to Drag Reducing Agents, including hydraulic performance, injection requirements, control considerations, and impacts on pipeline capacity.
Review hydraulic work completed by internal team members and consultants, and authenticate engineering work within the individual's area of competency.
Mentor developing engineers and contribute to improvements in hydraulic models, tools, standards, workflows, and documentation practices.

Education, Skills and Experience

Bachelor's degree in Engineering, preferably Chemical, Mechanical, or Process Engineering.
Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) registered, or eligible for registration, with APEGA.
Minimum 8 years of relevant pipeline engineering experience, including significant experience in hydrocarbon liquid pipeline hydraulics.
Experience supporting pipeline and facility project development, including pipeline sizing, system curve development, preliminary pump selection, and evaluation of early-stage design options with Commercial and Project teams.
Strong hydraulic fundamentals and competency with a range of analysis methods, including simulation software, simplified calculations, and pump and system curve analysis.
Experience with SPS (Synergi Pipeline Simulator) is a strong asset. Experience with AFT Fathom/Impulse, PIPESIM, or equivalent hydraulic simulation tools is also considered an asset.
Ability to interpret SCADA and operating data for hydraulic troubleshooting and model validation, combined with working knowledge of CSA Z662, applicable ASME standards, and other relevant pipeline codes and standards.
