What is a senior test engineer?

Senior Test Engineers are experienced professionals responsible for designing, implementing, and overseeing testing processes to ensure the quality and reliability of software products or systems. They develop test plans, create automated and manual test cases, and collaborate with developers and other stakeholders to identify and resolve issues. Their role often includes mentoring junior team members, improving testing strategies, and ensuring that products meet industry standards and customer requirements.

How does a senior test engineer typically collaborate with development and product teams during the software release cycle?

As a Senior Test Engineer, you will work closely with software developers and product managers throughout the software release cycle. You'll participate in design and requirement reviews to identify potential quality issues early, help define testing strategies, and provide feedback on testability. Regular communication and collaboration are essential, as you'll often coordinate test plans, report on defects, and ensure that issues are resolved before release. This cross-functional teamwork not only helps deliver high-quality software but also broadens your understanding of the product and enhances your problem-solving skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior test engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Test Engineer, you need advanced knowledge of software testing methodologies, test automation, and quality assurance principles, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Expertise with automation tools such as Selenium, JUnit, or TestNG, and familiarity with CI/CD systems like Jenkins are often required, as well as certifications like ISTQB. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills distinguish top performers in this role. These skills are crucial for ensuring software reliability, optimizing testing processes, and collaborating effectively with development teams.

What is the difference between Senior Test Engineer vs QA Analyst?

Job description

Application close date:

Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis until the requisition is closed.

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We're working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

This role is part of the Lunar Permanence business unit, which develops Blue Origin's Blue Moon landers and related products. To further Blue Origin's mission of millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth, we are building sustainable infrastructure for our transport of crew and cargo from Earth to the lunar surface.

As part of a hardworking team of specialists, technicians, and engineers, you will serve as a Test Definition Responsible Engineer (RE) for Blue Origin's Human Landing System (HLS), driving integrated test definition across programs, elements, and partners to help land astronauts on the Moon. You will act as the connective tissue between test groups, systems and vehicle test teams, mission operations, and external partners - bringing stakeholders together, owning integrated and joint test plans, and ensuring that what we test and how we made that decision traces cleanly through to certification. You will own the definition of how HLS elements are tested together, close the gaps between them, and carry an integrated test perspective from planning through production operations. This is a senior, technical integrator role for someone who thrives at the seams between organizations.

Special Mentions

  • Relocation provided
  • Travel expected up to 25% of the time
  • Interviews will include a technical assessment
  • Team scope includes both NASA Joint Test Definition and Blue-to-Blue Integrated Test Definition

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Serve as an HLS test integrator and Responsible Engineer - driving test definition into integrated, joint, and interelement testing, establishing how HLS elements are tested together, and bringing test groups, systems/vehicle test, mission operations, and partners to a single integrated definition
  • Design and implement test planning and definition processes across the organization with a tie to certification products.
  • Create and coordinate integrated and joint test plans across test beds, systems test, vehicle test, and mission operations, including end-to-end, mission-level test solutions
  • Assess interface documents (ICDs/IRDs) against test objectives to confirm requirements are traced appropriately and to identify and close missing or ambiguous requirements
  • Review engineering and design changes, participate in release cycles, and keep test definitions current across all data repositories, ensuring requirements flow correctly to the IPTs
  • Provide integrated master schedule (IMS) inputs and thread schedule and test dependencies across integrated product teams (IPTs), maintaining a top-down and bottom-up integrated HLS test perspective
  • Own test data products end-to-end and drive test definition downstream into production test operations and work execution; identify test gaps - including unique environments and cross-program test resource needs (test sites, ground test articles, specialized facilities) - and represent HLS test in enterprise-level and multi-user test resource discussions
  • Interface with the customer and partner elements on test coordination and test insight, representing HLS in joint and integrated reviews
  • Provide technical mentoring and lead cross-functional test efforts through informal and formal technical leadership

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline (aerospace, mechanical, electrical, systems, or related)
  • 8+ years of relevant experience in test engineering, systems test, integration & test, or verification engineering across the test design and execution lifecycle; an advanced degree may substitute for a portion of the experience requirement
  • Demonstrated experience owning test planning, requirements verification, and integrated or system-level test definition with minimal oversight
  • Working knowledge of interface management (ICDs/IRDs), requirements traceability and verification, and integrated master schedule dependencies
  • Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional technical efforts and coordinate across multiple organizations without direct authority
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in an engineering or technical discipline
  • Human spaceflight, crewed vehicle, launch vehicle, or experience with another safety-critical and regulated industry (medical devices, nuclear, automotive, etc.)
  • Experience integrating with NASA or a major aerospace customer/partner, including working to customer oversight/insight processes and joint test coordination
  • Experience defining or executing integrated, interelement, or joint end-to-end test campaigns across multiple elements or organizations
  • Familiarity with verification and certification processes, hazard analyses/hazard reports, and test compliance/verification-artifact processes
  • Proficiency with requirements management and modeling tools (e.g., DOORS, Jama, Cameo) and scheduling tools (e.g., MS Project, Primavera)
  • Prior experience acting as a test integrator or Responsible Engineer across organizational boundaries
  • Demonstrated technical mentoring and the ability to set technical direction for a test scope
