Job description

We are hiring Technical Telecommunication Migration Specialist for a Contract position in irvine, CA
Role Overview
Our client is seeking an experienced Telecom Lead with 10+ years of industry experience to take ownership of a major Voice Mitel migration initiative.
About the Role
A large university is undergoing a major telecommunications modernization initiative, migrating approximately 4,500 remaining phone numbers from a legacy Mitel PBX platform to Microsoft Teams Phone and AudioCodes analog gateways, with a parallel track moving Health Sciences numbers to Avaya. We're looking for a hands-on technical contractor to help drive the remaining phases of this migration to completion.
This is a project-based engagement focused on technical delivery not a day-to-day operations or helpdesk role. You'll work under the direction of the university's Project Manager and Telecommunications Manager, partnering closely with Network Engineering, Field Technicians, Health Sciences, vendors, and campus stakeholders.
What You'll Do
Execute migration of ~4,500 phone numbers from Mitel PBX to Microsoft Teams Phone, AudioCodes analog gateways, and Avaya (for Health Sciences) including configuration, testing, cutovers, and post-migration validation.
Configure, install, and maintain Mitel PBX, Teams Phone, and AudioCodes gateway systems, including converting Mitel Hunt Groups into Teams Phone Call Queues.
Validate unclear or "unknown" phone numbers with departmental contacts to confirm ownership and determine the right migration path, especially where existing records are incomplete.
Identify technical risks in complex or non-standard migration scenarios and recommend mitigations.
Maintain and update telecom inventory and equipment records throughout the migration.
Provide technical input on the evolving Avaya migration approach for Health Sciences as the design matures.
Analyze telecom data across multiple non-integrated systems (PBX, Teams, LDAP, billing, inventory) to reconcile ownership and support planning.
Build reports, spreadsheets, and dashboards in Excel to track migration progress and support decision-making.
Use AI-assisted tools (e.g., Claude, ChatGPT, Copilot) to improve documentation, analysis, and process efficiency.
Produce migration documentation, configuration standards, and knowledge transfer materials so university staff can sustain the work going forward.
Provide periodic project status updates to the Project Manager.
What We're Looking For
Required:
Hands-on administration/configuration of Microsoft Teams Phone, including Direct Routing, Auto Attendants, Call Queues, and related VoIP/SIP technologies.
Administration of enterprise Mitel PBX systems, including Hunt Group (HTG) and call routing configuration.
Configuration, installation, and maintenance of AudioCodes analog gateways or similar voice gateway technology.
Prior enterprise telecom migration/modernization project experience, including developing and documenting technical migration solutions and standards.
Strong analytical skills, particularly Microsoft Excel, for organizing and validating technical/inventory data.
Experience using AI-assisted tools to support documentation, analysis, or process improvement.
Nice to Have:
Experience with AWS Connect Contact Center.
Background supporting telecom environments in higher education, healthcare, or other large enterprise organizations.
Experience with specialized or clinical environment migrations (e.g., health sciences).
Soft Skills:
Strong written and verbal communication you'll be working directly with technical staff, vendors, and non-technical business stakeholders.
Comfortable operating independently while collaborating well within a small project team.
Able to navigate ambiguity this role involves resolving non-standard migration scenarios where records may be incomplete or inconsistent, not just configuring known systems.
Engagement Details
Duration: 18 months
Schedule: Monday Friday, 8:00 AM 5:00 PM
Location: Primarily onsite; hybrid arrangements may be considered after an initial onboarding period
Reporting: Works under the university's Project Manager, in coordination with the Telecommunications Manager
Dress Code: Business casual
Estimated Pay Range: 70-80/hr
