What does a senior system administrator do?

A Senior System Administrator is responsible for managing, maintaining, and securing an organization's IT infrastructure, including servers, networks, and related systems. They oversee the installation and configuration of hardware and software, troubleshoot complex technical issues, and ensure the reliability and performance of IT services. Senior System Administrators also implement security policies, perform regular system updates, and may supervise junior IT staff. Their expertise is essential for minimizing system downtime and protecting data integrity.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior system administrator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior System Administrator, you need in-depth knowledge of operating systems, networking, security protocols, and significant experience managing IT infrastructure, usually backed by a degree in computer science or related certifications (such as CompTIA, Microsoft, or Cisco). Expertise with tools like VMware, Active Directory, PowerShell, and cloud platforms (AWS, Azure) is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for this role. These abilities ensure reliable system performance, minimize downtime, and support the technology needs of an organization.

You'll partner closely with Finance, Accounting, Procurement, Supply Chain, and IT to ensure our business systems remain stable, compliant, and scalable. While operational support is a core responsibility, you'll also contribute to automation initiatives, system enhancements, and cross-functional projects that improve business processes and user experience.
This role is ideal for someone who enjoys solving complex problems, improving processes, and growing into ownership of increasingly strategic initiatives.
Finance Systems Administration
  • Administer and support NetSuite across Finance modules including GL, ARM, Fixed Assets, Inventory, Lease Accounting, Procurement, and Charted (SquareWorks).
  • Support adjacent Finance Systems including Coupa, Avalara, FloQast, CoStar, Workato, and related enterprise applications.
  • Configure and maintain workflows, saved searches, reports, dashboards, custom records, forms, and user roles.
  • Monitor system and integration health, troubleshoot production issues, perform root cause analysis, and recommend improvements that enhance performance and user experience.
  • Support application upgrades, release management activities, regression testing, and production deployments across the Finance Systems landscape.

Business Systems Support
  • Own day-to-day Finance Systems support operations, including intake, triage, prioritization, and resolution of production issues while meeting established service levels.
  • Partner with Finance, Accounting, Procurement, and Supply Chain to resolve business-critical issues and support month-end and quarter-end close.
  • Manage master data including subsidiaries, vendors, locations, inventory, tax codes, currencies, and GL accounts across a global multi-subsidiary environment.
  • Support inventory operations including RMAs, assembly builds, item fulfillment, inventory adjustments, and warehouse transactions.
  • Partner with business stakeholders to gather requirements, coordinate User Acceptance Testing (UAT), and validate system enhancements prior to production deployment.

Compliance & Operational Excellence
  • Administer user access, roles, approval workflows, and delegated approvals.
  • Support SOX controls including access reviews, Segregation of Duties, change management, and audit evidence using Fastpath.
  • Create and maintain SOPs, process documentation, and system documentation that improve operational consistency and audit readiness.
  • Identify recurring issues and recommend process improvements that reduce manual effort and improve system reliability.

Projects & Automation
  • Partner with the Support Team to deliver business system enhancements, integrations, automation initiatives, and cross-functional projects.
  • Independently own smaller projects from requirements gathering through testing, deployment, documentation, and post-production support.
  • Contribute to automation initiatives by identifying opportunities to streamline processes using workflows, AI tools, and integration technologies.
  • Support testing, release readiness, validation, and post-production monitoring for new releases, enhancements, and enterprise application implementations.
Who You Are:
  • 5-8 years of NetSuite Administration experience.
  • Strong experience administering NetSuite in a multi-subsidiary, multi-currency environment.
  • Hands-on experience with ARM, Fixed Assets, Inventory, Lease Accounting, Procurement, and Workflow configuration.
  • Experience configuring workflows, saved searches, reports, dashboards, custom records, forms, and security roles.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and root cause analysis skills.
  • Experience supporting SOX compliance, access controls, change management, and audit activities.
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills.
Preferred:
  • Experience supporting NetSuite, Charted (SquareWorks), Coupa, Avalara, FloQast, CoStar, Ramp, Workato, or similar Finance applications.
  • SuiteQL or SuiteScript experience.
  • Experience using AI tools such as ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, or similar to improve documentation, troubleshooting, and operational efficiency.
  • NetSuite Administrator Certification.
  • Bachelor's degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or related field.
