Job description

At Freddie Mac, our mission of Making Home Possible is what motivates us, and it's at the core of everything we do. Since our charter in 1970, we have made home possible for more than 90 million families across the country. Join an organization where your work contributes to a greater purpose.
Position Overview:
The Senior Software Engineer provides strategic technical leadership, championing architectural excellence and driving innovation across the development lifecycle. This role balances visionary thinking with hands-on execution, fostering a culture of simplicity while constructively challenging technical constraints to deliver scalable, maintainable solutions.
Our Impact:
The BTO amplifies IT delivery effectiveness across Modern Delivery Digital teams by seamlessly integrating development, testing, and operations capabilities. This unified approach leverages diverse skills, proven processes, modern practices, and integrated tooling to enable large-scale service delivery with exceptional speed, reliability, and quality.
Your Impact:
As a Senior Software Engineer, you will guide a high-performing team in designing and delivering data-driven components and applications that power Modern Delivery initiatives. Your responsibilities span three critical areas:
Technical Leadership & Architecture Lead critical technical and architectural decisions that shape system design, infrastructure strategy, and configuration optimization. Analyze business requirements, propose design alternatives aligned with the technical roadmap, and architect microservices-based solutions leveraging Java/JEE frameworks, modern UI technologies, Docker, and OpenShift. Direct technical upgrades and migrations-including middleware modernization, cloud database transitions, and performance optimization-while ensuring alignment with enterprise standards.
DevOps & Infrastructure Excellence Design and implement scaling strategies, develop automation frameworks, and mentor teams in build automation using containerization (Docker) and orchestration platforms (OpenShift, Kubernetes, EKS). Establish CI/CD best practices using the Atlassian tool suite and related technologies, enabling rapid, reliable deployments at scale.
Quality, Security & Team Development Provide proactive technical guidance throughout the development lifecycle to identify and resolve quality issues early. Develop reference implementations and microservices using Java web services frameworks, conduct rigorous design and code reviews, and drive security remediation for vulnerabilities identified through SAST and FOSS scanning. Mentor and develop junior engineers, document architectural decisions and lessons learned, and maintain comprehensive technical knowledge resources.
Qualifications:
Required Experience:
  • 5-7 years of professional software engineering experience designing and delivering enterprise solutions
  • 5+ years of hands-on development with modern Java tech stack in agile, distributed teams
  • 5+ years of demonstrated expertise developing front-end and orchestration layer technologies: Java, Spring Boot, RESTful APIs, Angular, Node.js, JavaScript, TypeScript, HTML5, and CSS
  • 3+ years of specialized experience with relational and NoSQL databases (PostgreSQL, MongoDB, etc.)
  • 3+ years designing and implementing large-scale microservices architectures with container orchestration frameworks
  • 3+ years of DevOps and CI/CD pipeline experience (Jenkins, GitHub, Bitbucket, Spinnaker, JUnit, Cypress, Cucumber)
  • 2+ years of hands-on cloud platform experience (AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud)

Education & Credentials:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent professional experience
  • Advanced degree or specialized certifications in software architecture, cloud technologies, or DevOps practices strongly preferred

Professional Attributes:
  • Exceptional communication and stakeholder management skills, with ability to influence across business and IT organizations
  • Collaborative mindset with a passion for innovation and continuous improvement
  • Strong organizational and time management capabilities with demonstrated ability to prioritize competing demands
  • Proven capacity to rapidly master new technologies, tools, and frameworks
  • Proactive problem-solver with unwavering commitment to customer satisfaction and operational excellence
  • Natural mentor and leader who inspires and develops high-performing teams

Keys to Success in this Role:
The ideal candidate possesses a collaborative attitude and aims to be innovative, demonstrating thoughtfulness and the ability to inspire others.
