What is a senior software developer apprenticeship?

A Senior Software Developer Apprenticeship is a structured training program that allows individuals to gain advanced skills in software development while working on real projects. Apprentices typically learn from experienced developers and gradually take on more complex tasks, with a focus on leadership, architecture, and mentoring. This role is ideal for those who already have foundational programming knowledge and are looking to accelerate their career towards senior-level positions. The apprenticeship blends hands-on experience with formal education, often leading to recognized qualifications and potential job offers upon completion.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior software developer apprentice?

To excel as a Senior Software Developer Apprentice, you need a strong understanding of programming languages, software development methodologies, and a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with tools like Git, integrated development environments (IDEs), and frameworks such as React or .NET is commonly expected, along with an interest in obtaining industry certifications. Effective problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills help apprentices collaborate with senior developers and adapt to complex project environments. These skills and qualities ensure you can contribute meaningfully while learning advanced concepts and best practices essential for career growth in software development.

These programs often include structured learning sessions, access to industry-standard tools, and opportunities to collaborate with cross-functional teams, which accelerates your professional growth. Apprenticeships are designed to bridge the gap between theory and practice, helping you build a strong foundation for advanced roles in software development.

Job description

McKesson is an impact-driven, Fortune 10 company that touches virtually every aspect of healthcare. We are known for delivering insights, products, and services that make quality care more accessible and affordable. Here, we focus on the health, happiness, and well-being of you and those we serve - we care.

What you do at McKesson matters. We foster a culture where you can grow, make an impact, and are empowered to bring new ideas. Together, we thrive as we shape the future of health for patients, our communities, and our people. If you want to be part of tomorrow's health today, we want to hear from you.

The Specialty Access & Affordability value stream is seeking a Senior Full Stack Developer to join theFastAuthteam. In this role you will build and scale the applications that move specialty prescriptions through prior authorization faster, reducing the time between a prescription being written and a patient starting therapy.

You will work alongside a collaborative group of skilled engineers who take pride in consistent delivery and technical excellence, spanning React front ends, .NET services, and event-driven integrations running on Azure. This is a hands-on role on a team that ships continuously and owns what it builds.

What You'll Do

  • Design and develop robust, scalable web applications using TypeScript, React, and/or .NET

  • Partner with engineers and architects to design and implement Azure cloud solutions

  • Lead and coach team members through difficult problems

  • Help build and maintain our event-driven architecture

  • Turn complex business requirements into elegant, simple technical solutions

  • Raise the bar on the team through code review, pairing, and mentoring less experienced developers

  • Deliver high-quality work at a predictable cadence and help the team sustain it

  • Support what you build in production, including monitoring, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement

  • Participate in agile ceremonies, technical planning, and design reviews

Priority will be given to candidates who reside in the Columbus, OH metropolitan area.

We are unable to provide sponsorship for this role presently or in the future

Minimum Requirement

Degree or equivalent experience, plus typically 8+ years of relevant professional experience.

  • Experience with Azure cloud services and infrastructure

  • Working knowledge of event-driven architecture, ideally including Kafka

  • A track record of using AI tools effectively in your day-to-day development workflow

  • Ability to take a feature from ambiguous requirement to production with limited direction

  • Consistent follow-through on commitments and a bias toward finishing work

  • Collaborative approach to software development and problem solving

  • Comfort working in a fast-moving environment where priorities evolve as the product does

Additional Skills (Preferred)

  • Healthcare applications, particularly EHR integrations

  • RPA technology

  • FHIR standard, SMART on FHIR integrations, and healthcare data exchange

  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and automated testing

  • Contributions to open source projects or developer communities

Education

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
