What does a Senior Slack Software Engineer do?

A Senior Slack Software Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining complex software solutions within the Slack platform. They collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality features, optimize system performance, and ensure the scalability of Slack's infrastructure. In addition to hands-on coding, they often mentor junior engineers, contribute to architectural decisions, and help set technical direction for projects. Their work ensures Slack remains reliable, secure, and user-friendly for millions of users.

What is the difference between Senior Slack Software Engineer vs Slack Software Engineer?

AspectSenior Slack Software EngineerSlack Software Engineer
Required Experience5+ years in software development, leadership experience1-3 years, entry to mid-level
ResponsibilitiesDesigning complex features, mentoring, leading projectsDeveloping features, fixing bugs, collaborating with teams
Work EnvironmentFast-paced, collaborative, cross-functional teamsTeam-oriented, Agile environment
CertificationsOptional, but relevant certifications preferredNot typically required

The main difference between a Senior Slack Software Engineer and a Slack Software Engineer lies in experience, responsibilities, and leadership roles. Senior engineers typically lead projects and mentor others, while Slack Software Engineers focus on developing and maintaining features. Both roles work in collaborative, fast-paced environments within the tech industry.

How does a Senior Slack Software Engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during feature development?

As a Senior Slack Software Engineer, you will frequently collaborate with product managers, designers, and quality assurance teams throughout the product development lifecycle. This collaboration often includes participating in planning meetings, providing technical input during design discussions, and ensuring alignment on feature requirements and timelines. You’ll also mentor junior engineers and facilitate code reviews to maintain high-quality standards. Strong communication skills and a proactive approach are essential, as you’ll often bridge the gap between technical implementation and user-facing features.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior Slack Software Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Slack Software Engineer, you need advanced programming skills (such as Java, Python, or JavaScript), a deep understanding of software architecture, and experience with scalable, distributed systems, typically supported by a bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science or a related field. Expertise in Slack’s API, cloud platforms (like AWS or GCP), CI/CD pipelines, and version control systems (such as Git) is commonly required. Strong problem-solving abilities, leadership, and effective communication help you collaborate across teams and mentor junior engineers. These skills ensure the development of reliable, innovative solutions that enhance Slack's platform while supporting team growth and efficient project delivery.

Job description

SPACE SYSTEMS

At Rocket Lab, we're not just launching rockets - we're building the future of space. Our Space Systems team builds everything from complete spacecraft, precision payloads to the components and subsystems that allow them to thrive in space, like solar panels, flight software, star trackers, optical systems, separation systems, radios, and more.

Our Space Systems team has enabled more than 1,700 missions, ranging from interplanetary exploration, in-space manufacturing to national security and defense initiatives. The team has built spacecraft, payloads, and components for missions to the Moon and Mars, working with partners including NASA, the Space Development Agency, and the U.S. Space Force. Whether it's a single high-performance spacecraft, constellation, or the vertically integrated components that help them get to space - our world class Space Systems team is empowering some of the boldest and most ambitious space missions.

SENIOR SOFTWARE ENGINEER I

Rocket Lab's Optical Systems division solves mission-critical space domain and Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) challenges for Department of Defense (DoD) and Intelligence Community (IC) customers. Our vision is to revolutionize the space-based payload market with innovative and novel designs for space, terrestrial, and airborne environments. Building on more than 20 years of electro-optical and infrared systems innovation from Geost, Optical Systems delivers solutions to the warfighter for responsive, scalable sensing solutions across all orbital domains.

As a Senior Software Engineer I based at our Optical Systems sites in Tucson, AZ, you will have the opportunity to support Tranche 3 of the U.S. Space Development Agency's (SDA) Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture (PWSA) by building deep learning neural networks for advanced Electro-Optical (EO/IR) technology.

WHAT YOU'LL GET TO DO

  • Collaborate with researchers on artificial intelligence, machine learning, and computer vision.
  • Preform rapid prototyping and enhanced development to be integrated into operational systems.
  • Contribute programming ability and experience to develop solutions for real-world problems.
  • Validate, tune, test, and deploy advanced neural networks and algorithms.
  • Perform troubleshooting, bug fixes, and maintenance of existing and new code to ensure stability.
  • Ability to support travel or off-site work, as needed

YOU'LL BRING THESE QUALIFICATIONS AS SENIOR SOFTWARE ENGINEER I:

  • Bachelor's degree in physics, astronomy, mathematics, computer science, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering or equivalent discipline with 5+ years of experience
  • Experience in building deep learning neural network for computer vision, image processing, or video analysis
  • Ability to obtain and maintain an U.S. Government Security Clearance

THESE QUALIFICATIONS WOULD BE NICE TO HAVE:

  • Proficiency in C++ or Python 3
  • Experience with deep learning libraries (PyTorch and TensorFlow)
  • Experience across the deep learning life cycle, including model selection, training, validation, testing, and deployment.
  • Understanding of computer vision approaches, such as object detection, image segmentation, re-Identification, tracking, and super resolution
  • Machine learning experience with 3-D data.
  • Experience curating quality, real-world datasets for training deep learning models

This position may require prolonged periods of sitting, standing, walking, computer work, and occasional exposure to moderate levels of noise, dust, and fumes in production areas.
