Pepper’s Senior Dog Sanctuary (“PSDS”) Medical Director – Full -Time Position

Pepper’s Senior Dog Sanctuary (PSDS) is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that provides senior dogs a compassionate, FURever home at our veterinarian- supervised sanctuary.

Pepper’s exists to help ease the overcrowding of local shelters, while providing quality lifelong care to dogs who may have otherwise been euthanized. Senior dogs are referred to us by animal welfare organizations who have been unable to place a senior dog for adoption. From there, our dedicated team of volunteers and staff welcome these dogs to our loving sanctuary for the rest of their lives. Accepting dogs from animal welfare organizations, allows them to focus their space and resources on placing as many animals as possible.

Our onsite medical team has special training in rehabilitation and hospice care, allowing them to provide comprehensive medical care for our dogs. Treatments include routine examination, preventative care, acupuncture, physical rehabilitation (hydrotherapy, laser therapy, massage, etc), and surgery. When PSDS seniors reach the end of their life here with us, our team provides round the clock hospice care to ensure a peaceful and dignified passing.

Our community outreach programs allow PSDS and our dogs to give back to the community. Health, wellness, and community is at the heart of everything we do and our dogs enjoy working with these groups to share the love.

Pepper’s Senior Dog Sanctuary (“PSDS”) Medical Director – Full -Time Position

Hours: 8:30-4:30 Monday through Friday in person.

Compensation: $150,000-$190,000 depending on experience. Fully paid healthcare coverage for the employee.

The Medical Director provides comprehensive medical care for the dogs at Peppers Senior Dog Sanctuary, oversees the veterinary team, and contributes to strategic planning and operational efficiency. This role requires a highly skilled veterinarian with strong leadership, communication, and organizational abilities.

Core Responsibilities:

1. Direct Animal Care:
   • Schedule and perform medical care
   • Maintain accurate records
   • Coordinate specialist care
   • Manage medical issues (on call availability required for medical emergencies only)
   • Administer medications
   • Oversee euthanasia procedures

1. Medical Oversight:
   • Conduct intake screenings and make recommendations, subject to approval of,

Executive Director

• Develop and oversee enrichment plans
• Create treatment plans
• Make decisions on euthanasia

1. Medical Resource Management:
   • Manage all medical equipment, review lease agreements and contracts, and work with Executive Director to negotiate pricing
   • Create, maintain and manage inventories of medical equipment, clinic supplies, drugs, and food
2. Create and maintain logs for animal medications; organize weekly medications
3. Set up and oversee practice management software

1. Veterinary Staff Management & Operations:
   • Supervise and mentor members of the veterinary team, care team, and rehabilitation staff
   • Foster a positive and collaborative work environment
2. Manage staff schedules and timekeeping

• Contribute to and participate in veterinary employee performance reviews (to be conducted with Executive Director and/or HR manager)
• Support veterinary staff development through continuing education opportunities, subject to approval by Executive Director
• Be available at least one hour a day for in-person meetings and discussions with team members

1. Strategic Planning
   • Contribute to the development and implementation of veterinary care strategies, spay/neuter clinic planning, vaccine clinic planning, and public-facing clinic initiatives
   • Participate in strategic discussions with Strategic Planning Committee and/or the Leadership Team regarding PSDS’s mission and direction
   • Develop and enforce biosecurity protocols for onsite and offsite events.
   • Oversee intake procedures (medical and behavioral aspects)
   • Oversee and help recruit employees for Pepper’s Crossing

1. Communication and Collaboration:
   • Communicate effectively with staff, volunteers, the Board of Directors, and donors regarding dog-related issues
   • Collaborate with development team to connect with veterinary industry professionals and potential donors
   • Serve as public representative at events upon request
   • Manage relationships with veterinary vendors, public clinics, and animal welfare organizations
2. Provide euthanasia notifications to PSDS staff and others as requested by Executive Director

1. Regulation, Compliance & Reporting:
   • Ensure organizational compliance with PACFA and DEA regulations; provide support to administrative staff to ensure proper documentation and controls
   • Track financial and care statistics
2. Provide data and reports to Board of Directors and be available to answer questions
   • Manage invoices and maintain organized records

1. Content Creation and Review:
   • Develop dog-related content for policies, procedures, training materials, social media, website, and fundraising materials
   • Provide final approval for dog-related content
