What is the difference between Senior Robotics Engineer Localization vs Robotics Software Engineer?

AspectSenior Robotics Engineer LocalizationRobotics Software Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Robotics, Computer Science, or related; experience in localization algorithmsBachelor's or Master's in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related; programming skills
Work EnvironmentRobotics development labs, field testing, autonomous vehicle companiesSoftware development teams, robotics companies, research labs
Industry UsageAutonomous vehicles, mobile robots, dronesRobotics applications across industries, including manufacturing and service robots

While both roles involve robotics software development, Senior Robotics Engineer Localization specializes in developing algorithms for determining a robot's position within its environment, often requiring expertise in sensor fusion and mapping. Robotics Software Engineers focus broadly on creating software for robot control, perception, and navigation. The localization role is more specialized, whereas the software engineer role covers a wider range of robotics software development tasks.

Job description

The Senior Design Engineer will provide technical leadership in the design, development, and sustainment of fractional horsepower electric motors and related motion products. This role is a hands-on technical contributor responsible for executing product designs, supporting manufacturing, and driving continuous improvement across existing and new motor platforms.
The Senior Design Engineer works cross functionally with Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain, Sales, and Customers to deliver reliable, cost-effective motor solutions that meet performance, quality, and regulatory requirements. This position will also provide mentorship of other engineers and technical staff.
About Our Company
ElectroCraft, Inc. provides application-engineered specialty fractional-horsepower motor and motion control products. Under the hood, ElectroCraft motion systems power critical components of some of the world's most innovative products in medical equipment, robotics, industrial automation, agriculture, and lab equipment. Some of our innovative products include DC motors, gear motors, linear actuators, and motor drives. With facilities and customers around the globe, ElectroCraft provides advanced precision solutions with the highest reliability and lowest total cost of ownership, which is why it is trusted by both the largest brands and the newest cutting-edge companies.
Key Responsibilities
  • Product Design & Development
  • Design and develop fractional horsepower electric motors (e.g., BLDC, PMDC, stepper, AC motors) from concept through production release.
  • Generate and review engineering calculations, CAD models, drawings, specifications, and bills of material.
  • Apply sound engineering principles related to magnetics, thermal performance, mechanical integrity, and materials.

Analysis, Testing & Validation
  • Perform and interpret electromagnetic, thermal, and mechanical analyses to optimize motor performance and reliability.
  • Support prototype builds, testing, and validation activities; analyze results and implement design improvements.
  • Assist with product qualification, life testing, and compliance testing.

Manufacturing & Sustaining Support
  • Partner with Manufacturing Engineering to ensure designs are manufacturable, repeatable, and cost effective (DFM/DFA).
  • Provide engineering support for production issues, root cause analysis, and corrective actions.
  • Participate in value engineering and continuous improvement initiatives.

Cross Functional Collaboration
  • Support customer applications by reviewing requirements, evaluating feasibility, and assisting with technical solutions.
  • Collaborate effectively with Quality, Supply Chain, and Sales teams to resolve technical issues and support product launches.
  • Participate in annual budget discussions and cost reduction projects.
  • Mentor and coach junior and mid-level engineers, promoting best practices in design, documentation, and problem solving.

Core Competencies
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Hands on, detail oriented engineering mindset
  • Strong communication with both technical and non technical stakeholders
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities effectively
  • Collaborative and team focused approach balancing results aside mentorship

The above statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to the job. They are not intended to be an all-encompassing list of all responsibilities, duties and skills required of personnel so classified.
Requirements
Education Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
Preferred Experience or Skills
  • 10+ years of engineering experience, with a strong focus on electric motor or rotating machinery design.
  • Experience with Autodesk CAD tools (e.g., Inventor, Fusion) and engineering analysis methods.
  • Working knowledge of electric motor fundamentals: windings, magnets, laminations, bearings, insulation systems.
  • Familiarity with applicable standards (UL, IEC, NEMA, CE, RoHS).
  • Master's degree in engineering.
  • Experience supporting products in production and field environments.
  • Exposure to motor drives, controls, or integrated motion systems.
  • Experience in industrial, medical, robotics, or automation markets.
