What is the difference between Senior Robotics Engineer Localization vs Robotics Software Engineer?

AspectSenior Robotics Engineer LocalizationRobotics Software Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Robotics, Computer Science, or related; experience in localization algorithmsBachelor's or Master's in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related; programming skills
Work EnvironmentRobotics development labs, field testing, autonomous vehicle companiesSoftware development teams, robotics companies, research labs
Industry UsageAutonomous vehicles, mobile robots, dronesRobotics applications across industries, including manufacturing and service robots

While both roles involve robotics software development, Senior Robotics Engineer Localization specializes in developing algorithms for determining a robot's position within its environment, often requiring expertise in sensor fusion and mapping. Robotics Software Engineers focus broadly on creating software for robot control, perception, and navigation. The localization role is more specialized, whereas the software engineer role covers a wider range of robotics software development tasks.

QinetiQ US's dedicated experts in defense, aerospace, security, and related fields all work together to explore new ways of protecting the American Warfighter, Security Forces, and Allies. Being a part of QinetiQ US means being central to the safety and security of the world around us. Partnering with our customers, we help save lives; reduce risks to society; and maintain the global infrastructure on which we all depend.
Why Join QinetiQ US?

In our diverse and inclusive environment, you can be authentic, feel valued, be respected, and realize your full potential. QinetiQ US will support you with workplace flexibility, a commitment to the health and well-being of you and your family and provide opportunities to work with a purpose. We are committed to supporting your success in both your professional and personal lives.
Position Overview
Join us in our support to the US Space Force (HQ USSF) Commercial Satellite Communication (COMSATCOM) Office (CSCO), where you will help shape the future of assured, resilient SATCOM for our warfighters and mission partners. As a key member of a highly collaborative, mission-focused team, you will apply your expertise to help deliver innovative commercial SATCOM capabilities, integrate a transformative COMSATCOM business model into the broader SATCOM enterprise, and translate complex operational needs into effective, affordable solutions. In this role, you will work directly with COMSATCOM customers and stakeholders, providing trusted guidance, insightful analysis, and clear recommendations that drive real-world impact in a rapidly evolving space domain. Job duties include:
Responsibilities
  • Provide subject matter expertise on commercial narrowband SATCOM technologies, including mobile beamforming, push-to-talk services, multi-orbit constellations for mobile connectivity, and advanced waveforms (e.g., MUOS-compatible or commercial equivalents).
  • Support development of narrowband-focused acquisition strategies, delivering technical analysis, service performance modeling, and market insights to senior leadership.
  • Conduct technology assessments and market surveys of narrowband providers, mobile SATCOM terminals, and service models to inform Space Force requirements.
  • Develop and review engineering documentation for narrowband architectures, including service level agreements, interface control documents, and CONOPS for mobile operations.
  • Engineer complex narrowband solutions across the acquisition lifecycle, from mission needs analysis through source selection and award.
  • Participate in government-industry forums, narrowband capability demonstrations, and technical interchange meetings to track emerging mobile SATCOM capabilities.
  • Collaborate with PEOs, program offices, and commercial providers to align narrowband solutions with tactical communications priorities, spectrum management, and interoperability standards.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, electrical engineering, telecommunications, or related technical field.
  • Minimum 8 years of experience in satellite communications, mobile SATCOM systems engineering, or defense acquisition.
  • Secret Clearance required. #qinetiqclearedjob
  • Proven leadership in cross-functional technical teams and high-stakes engineering efforts.
  • Strong analytical skills for complex systems analysis, trade studies, and performance modeling.
  • Excellent executive communication skills for briefing senior leaders and documenting technical recommendations.
  • Ability to operate independently in fast-paced, mission-driven environments with strict deadlines.
  • Ability to support on-site client meetings within the National Capital Region.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Direct experience with narrowband, MUOS, or commercial mobile SATCOM equivalents (e.g., Iridium Certus, Starlink Maritime/Aviation).
  • TS/SCI clearance preferred
  • Knowledge of Department of War (DoW) Information Assurance, RMF implementation, and POA&M development for SATCOM systems.
  • Familiarity with narrowband provider business models, service provisioning, and mobile terminal certification.
  • Experience with SATCOM requirements definition, waveform integration, and tactical communications planning.
  • Master's degree in engineering, systems management, or related discipline.

Pay Transparency
The salary range for this role is $125,000- $175,000 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. QinetiQ US considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate's work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.
