What is the difference between Senior Robotics Engineer Localization vs Robotics Software Engineer?

AspectSenior Robotics Engineer LocalizationRobotics Software Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Robotics, Computer Science, or related; experience in localization algorithmsBachelor's or Master's in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related; programming skills
Work EnvironmentRobotics development labs, field testing, autonomous vehicle companiesSoftware development teams, robotics companies, research labs
Industry UsageAutonomous vehicles, mobile robots, dronesRobotics applications across industries, including manufacturing and service robots

While both roles involve robotics software development, Senior Robotics Engineer Localization specializes in developing algorithms for determining a robot's position within its environment, often requiring expertise in sensor fusion and mapping. Robotics Software Engineers focus broadly on creating software for robot control, perception, and navigation. The localization role is more specialized, whereas the software engineer role covers a wider range of robotics software development tasks.

About the job

We are seeking a proactive and responsible Robotics Software Engineer to join our SLAM team. This junior to mid-level position is responsible for developing advanced SLAM systems that enable AGV autonomy in complex environments by delivering high-accuracy positioning and high-definition mapping, and this role focuses on building those systems hands-on from sensor selection to deployment in collaboration with researchers and engineers in the Atlanta lab.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or higher, in Robotics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Vision or a related field
  • Hands-on experience in SLAM, sensor fusion, or robotics.
  • Strong coding skills in one or more programming languages (C++ is strongly preferred).
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, including testing and hardware
  • Responsible, and eager to learn, with a strong ability to absorb new technical concepts quickly and contribute in a hands-on, collaborative environment.
  • Basic PLC knowledge or experience (development, troubleshooting or integration).
  • Bilingual in English and Mandarin Chinese

Preferred Qualifications

  • Hands-on experience in developing SLAM algorithms for pose estimation and mapping using camera, LiDAR-Inertial odometry or Visual-Inertial odometry, and IMU data
  • Hands-on experience with filter-based and graph-based optimization
  • Familiar with filter-based and graph-based optimization
  • Experience with multi-sensor fusion algorithms to improve localization accuracy and efficiency
