What is a Senior RFIC Design Engineer?

A Senior RFIC (Radio Frequency Integrated Circuit) Design Engineer is an experienced professional who designs, develops, and tests high-frequency integrated circuits used in wireless communication devices. They work extensively with analog and mixed-signal circuits, and are responsible for ensuring the performance, reliability, and manufacturability of RFICs for applications such as mobile phones, Wi-Fi, and IoT devices. In addition to technical design tasks, Senior RFIC Design Engineers often mentor junior engineers, collaborate with cross-functional teams, and contribute to the overall architecture of wireless systems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior RFIC Design Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior RFIC Design Engineer, you need deep expertise in RF circuit theory, semiconductor physics, and hands-on experience with analog/mixed-signal IC design, usually backed by a master's or PhD in electrical engineering. Mastery of industry-standard EDA tools (such as Cadence Virtuoso, Spectre, and EM simulators) and familiarity with relevant process design kits (PDKs) and lab measurement equipment is essential. Strong analytical thinking, teamwork, and effective communication set outstanding engineers apart. These skills ensure the development of high-performance, reliable RFICs through efficient problem-solving, collaboration, and precise execution in a fast-evolving field.

What is the difference between Senior Rfic Design Engineer vs RFIC Design Engineer?

AspectSenior Rfic Design EngineerRFIC Design Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering, specialized in RFIC designBachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering, with RF focus
Work EnvironmentDesign teams, R&D labs, semiconductor companiesDesign teams, semiconductor firms, integrated circuit companies
Industry UsageUsed in advanced wireless, telecom, and satellite systemsUsed in wireless communication, mobile devices, and RF components

The main difference is that a Senior Rfic Design Engineer typically has more experience and leadership responsibilities in RFIC design projects, whereas an RFIC Design Engineer may be earlier in their career or at a non-senior level. Both roles focus on RF integrated circuit design but differ in seniority and scope of responsibilities.

What are some common challenges faced by Senior RFIC Design Engineers during the chip design and validation process?

Senior RFIC Design Engineers often encounter challenges such as meeting stringent performance specifications within tight power and area constraints, managing electromagnetic interference, and ensuring the design complies with fabrication process limitations. Additionally, integrating RF circuits with digital and analog components on the same chip can introduce complex noise coupling issues that must be mitigated through careful layout and simulation. Close collaboration with layout engineers, validation teams, and system architects is essential to address these challenges and to deliver robust, manufacturable designs on schedule.

Job description

Application close date:

Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis until the requisition is closed.

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We're working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

Blue Origin is pioneering the future of space-based communications with TeraWave, a revolutionary satellite communications network designed to deliver symmetrical data speeds of up to 6 Tbps anywhere on Earth. This multi-orbit constellation will consist of optically interconnected satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO) and medium Earth orbit (MEO), providing enterprise-grade connectivity for critical operations worldwide.

We are seeking a Senior Phased-Array Antenna Design Engineer. You will design the physical hardware that forms the backbone of our in-space communications network. As a foundational member of a new in-house team, you will help create the next generation of high-frequency antennas for Blue Origin's TeraWave global network. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to antenna system design from the ground up.

You will lead the design, analysis, simulation, testing, and integration of high-performance antenna systems for our next-generation Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite constellation. In this role, you will own the resolution of complex technical challenges related to reflector geometries, feeds, RF performance, and phased-array architectures, ensuring reliable, high-throughput connectivity for users worldwide.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Lead the design and development of antenna systems, including reflectors, feeds, radiating elements, and sub-reflectors for Q-, V-, and E-band applications.

  • Own electromagnetic (EM) simulations using tools such as HFSS, CST, and TICRA to optimize antenna performance and drive key design decisions.

  • Collaborate closely with RFIC/MMIC, T/R module, DSP, mechanical, and thermal engineers to define requirements and ensure a cohesive system architecture.

  • Lead prototype fabrication, assembly, and RF testing activities, including near-field, far-field, and environmental testing.

  • Own the full antenna hardware lifecycle, from concept and design through fabrication, characterization, and environmental qualification (e.g., thermal vacuum, vibration, and radiation testing).

  • Develop and maintain technical documentation, including design analyses, test reports, requirements, and design review materials.

Minimum Qualifications

  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering and 7+ years of experience in RF antenna design, or an M.S. in Electrical Engineering or a related field and 5+ years of experience in RF antenna design.

  • Experience designing antenna elements and antenna-in-package solutions for microwave and mmWave phased-array applications.

  • Solid understanding of electromagnetic theory and its application to antenna design, particularly phased arrays.

  • Proven experience leading the design and development of antennas and associated hardware from concept through validation.

  • Proficiency with at least one major 3D electromagnetic simulation tool (e.g., TICRA, HFSS, or CST).

  • Understanding of the trade-offs among analog, digital, and hybrid beamforming architectures.

  • Familiarity with antenna measurement techniques and anechoic chamber testing.

Preferred Qualifications

  • M.S. or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering with a focus on Electromagnetics or Antennas.

  • Proven track record of taking a complex antenna system from initial concept through production and successful deployment, ideally for space applications.

  • Experience designing and developing high-frequency antennas operating in the mmWave spectrum, including Q-, V-, and E-bands.

  • Familiarity with RFIC/MMIC technologies and T/R module design considerations.

  • Knowledge of array calibration techniques and algorithms.

  • Experience with aerospace, defense, or wireless communications systems.

  • An active top secret clearance or eligibility to obtain and maintain a top secret clearance.
