What is a Senior RFIC Design Engineer?

A Senior RFIC (Radio Frequency Integrated Circuit) Design Engineer is an experienced professional who designs, develops, and tests high-frequency integrated circuits used in wireless communication devices. They work extensively with analog and mixed-signal circuits, and are responsible for ensuring the performance, reliability, and manufacturability of RFICs for applications such as mobile phones, Wi-Fi, and IoT devices. In addition to technical design tasks, Senior RFIC Design Engineers often mentor junior engineers, collaborate with cross-functional teams, and contribute to the overall architecture of wireless systems.

What are some common challenges faced by Senior RFIC Design Engineers during the chip design and validation process?

Senior RFIC Design Engineers often encounter challenges such as meeting stringent performance specifications within tight power and area constraints, managing electromagnetic interference, and ensuring the design complies with fabrication process limitations. Additionally, integrating RF circuits with digital and analog components on the same chip can introduce complex noise coupling issues that must be mitigated through careful layout and simulation. Close collaboration with layout engineers, validation teams, and system architects is essential to address these challenges and to deliver robust, manufacturable designs on schedule.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior RFIC Design Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior RFIC Design Engineer, you need deep expertise in RF circuit theory, semiconductor physics, and hands-on experience with analog/mixed-signal IC design, usually backed by a master's or PhD in electrical engineering. Mastery of industry-standard EDA tools (such as Cadence Virtuoso, Spectre, and EM simulators) and familiarity with relevant process design kits (PDKs) and lab measurement equipment is essential. Strong analytical thinking, teamwork, and effective communication set outstanding engineers apart. These skills ensure the development of high-performance, reliable RFICs through efficient problem-solving, collaboration, and precise execution in a fast-evolving field.

What is the difference between Senior Rfic Design Engineer vs RFIC Design Engineer?

AspectSenior Rfic Design EngineerRFIC Design Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering, specialized in RFIC designBachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering, with RF focus
Work EnvironmentDesign teams, R&D labs, semiconductor companiesDesign teams, semiconductor firms, integrated circuit companies
Industry UsageUsed in advanced wireless, telecom, and satellite systemsUsed in wireless communication, mobile devices, and RF components

The main difference is that a Senior Rfic Design Engineer typically has more experience and leadership responsibilities in RFIC design projects, whereas an RFIC Design Engineer may be earlier in their career or at a non-senior level. Both roles focus on RF integrated circuit design but differ in seniority and scope of responsibilities.

Overview

Tract Capital adopts a unique approach to digital infrastructure investment. Leveraging experience and strategic insights honed over three decades of creating successful companies in the space, we excel in nurturing and advancing leading-edge digital infrastructure enterprises. Our team of specialized experts are united by a singular purpose: to support the growth of digital infrastructure. Tract Capital goes beyond simple investment by acting as a strategic partner and catalyst for innovation within the sector. We ensure our engagements not only generate strong financial results but also develop essential digital infrastructure to meet growing demands. Tract Capital has introduced two digital infrastructure strategies. The first is a horizontal powered land strategy focused on creating master planned data center campuses called Tract. The second is the mega-campus vertical development strategy called Fleet Data Centers.

Tract Capital is seeking a Senior Electrical Design Engineer who owns the electrical design and power system studies discipline design for Fleetโ€™s behind-the-meter (BTM) power solutions and related campus interfaces. This role develops and maintains the electrical Basis of Design (BOD), leads technical alignment with vendors and electric utilities, and ensures designs meet safety, code, and availability expectations for mission-critical deployments.

How will you make a difference?

Responsibilities
  • Own electrical discipline scope for BTM generation integration, including one-line development, grounding/bonding, protection, controls interfaces, and telemetry requirements.
  • Develop and maintain the electrical Basis of Design (BOD) and design standards; ensure consistency across sites and deployments.
  • Lead coordination with equipment vendors (switchgear, transformers, breakers, relays, metering, controls) and validate compliance to Tract Capital standards and customer requirements.
  • Drive alignment with electric utilities and interconnection requirements where applicable; support technical documentation and utility review processes.
  • Support design reviews and constructability reviews with EPC partners; resolve RFIs and ensure high-quality built and turnover packages.
  • Define commissioning and acceptance requirements for electrical scope; support testing, energization planning, and troubleshooting during start-up.
  • Partner with Operations and Critical Facilities teams to ensure maintainable operating modes, clear procedures, and robust change management.
Qualifications
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline. PE preferred.
  • 8+ years in electrical design for mission-critical facilities, power systems, or industrial generation integration.
Required Qualifications
  • Senior-level experience owning the electrical discipline scope for behind-the-meter (BTM) generation integration.
  • Proven track record developing and maintaining the electrical Basis of Design (BOD) and design standards, driving consistency across multiple sites and deployments.
  • Extensive experience leading coordination with electrical equipment vendors and validating compliance with internal standards and customer requirements.
  • Demonstrated ability to drive alignment with electric utilities and interconnection requirements, including ownership of technical documentation and utility review processes.
  • Senior-level experience supporting and leading design and constructability reviews with EPC partners, resolving RFIs, and ensuring high-quality built and turnover packages.
  • Hands-on experience defining commissioning and acceptance requirements for electrical scope, including testing, energization planning, and troubleshooting during start-up.
  • Proven collaboration with multiple teams to establish maintainable operating modes, clear procedures, and robust change management in mission-critical deployments.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Reciprocating Gas Engine (RICE), Turbines, Fuel Cells, Battery design and deployment experience at 75 MW+ scale highly preferred.
  • Experience with paralleling switchgear, MV/LV distribution, protection coordination, and commissioning in data centers or similar critical environments.
  • Experience working directly with utilities, AHJs, and third-party testing/commissioning providers.
  • Working knowledge of NERC, FERC, NEC, NFPA 70E, IEEE standards relevant to protection and power quality.
  • Familiarity with OT monitoring/SCADA integration and alarm management.
