Job Description

The Senior Marketing & Communications Writer is a member of the corporate writing team and is responsible for developing clear, engaging content that supports the marketing and communications efforts of both Shriners Children's and Shriners International.

The Senior Writer demonstrates versatility across a range of styles and tones. They manage multiple assignments at once in a fast-paced environment, producing content primarily for print publications, with occasional digital opportunities. Projects include systemwide magazines, fraternal communications, collateral, internal communications, newsletters, speech and script writing, and other duties as assigned. This individual is a skilled editor and proofreader, helping to ensure the quality of all team projects.

The Senior Writer serves as a lead contributor on writing initiatives and demonstrates a high level of independence in managing projects and priorities. They provide strategic input on messaging, storytelling opportunities and communications approaches, while helping guide projects through completion across departments and stakeholders.

The Senior Writer demonstrates leadership by being an active contributor to team discussions, bringing forward ideas informed by audience needs and organizational priorities, continuously looking for ways to improve systemwide communications.

The Senior Writer is highly organized and detail-oriented, they balance short-term deliverables with longer-range projects while maintaining quality and accuracy. In addition to producing original content, the senior writer adheres to established grammar standards and corporate style guidelines and applies strong proofreading and editing skills.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Pitches, develops and writes clear, compelling original content for a wide range of publications and communications.

  • Produces content across multiple formats and tones, including feature, educational, informational, collateral, letters, speeches, scripts and related materials.

  • Leads and manages complex writing projects from concept through completion, including planning, drafting, approvals, revisions and coordination with designers and stakeholders.

  • Proactively identifies and develops newsworthy story ideas across Shriners Children's and Shriners International for use in corporate publications and other approved channels.

  • Conducts thorough research to ensure the accuracy, depth and credibility of all content.

  • Conducts interviews and engages effectively with internal and external stakeholders to develop accurate and engaging content.

  • Assists with the production process for quarterly publications, including planning, writing, editing, review cycles and handoff for design and production.

  • Produces accurate, brand-aligned content by applying editorial standards and style guidelines while integrating feedback to strengthen clarity and quality.

  • Serves as a resource within the writing team by assisting with editing, proofreading and maintaining consistency across communications.

  • Supports cross-departmental communications needs by developing and refining written materials and collateral.

  • Actively participates in team and department meetings and contributes strategic ideas for content development, storytelling opportunities and communications initiatives.

Required Qualifications:

  • 7 or more years of professional writing/editing or related experience

  • Exceptional copywriting skills

  • Pays close attention to accuracy and detail

  • MS Office Suite proficiency

  • Proficiency in grammar and language rules

  • Bachelor's Degree in English, Communications, Journalism or related field

  • Proven experience as a professional writer or in a related role

  • Exceptional copywriting skills

  • Strong commitment to accuracy and thoroughness

  • Communicates effectively across all levels of the organization
