Job description

Position Overviewย ย 

Theย Associate Director ofย Monitoring andย Evaluation (ADME)ย is responsible forย designing and implementing an institutional framework forย measuringย the reach and impact ofย The Maritime Aquarium's activities,ย programs,ย and exhibits.ย ย The scopeย will include activities and programs in education,ย accessibility,ย conservation,ย community outreach, and visitorย and memberย engagement, as well asย core operations thatย impactย those activities and programs.ย ย Theย frameworkย for monitoring and evaluation (M&E)ย will include: (1) an overall strategyย forย M&E across the institution; (2)ย appropriate tools and methodologies for M&E, includingย quantitative and qualitativeย data collection, verification,ย and analysis; statistical analysis;ย and relevantย social science research; (3)ย dataย storage,ย management and visualization systems; and (4)ย regularย reporting and communicationsย to various audiences.ย As part of theย design and implementation of an institutional framework forย M&E,ย the ADME works with senior staff and department heads toย identifyย Key Performance Indicatorsย (KPIs)ย to ensure that goals of the Aquarium's strategic plan are being met.ย ย ย ย ย ย ย 

The ADME reports directly to the President & CEO and is a member of the Aquarium's Extended Senior Staff. The ADME is expected to supervise the Manager of Evaluation and Monitoring (a position still to be recruited), as well as part-time data collectors to be hired for specific projects and needs, but for which there is a budget.

The ADMEย worksย directly withย department heads andย other senior staffย in theย design and implementation ofย the institutional frameworkย for M&Eย as it relates to eachย department,ย Theย ADMEย provides trainingย and technical assistance to staffย in delivery of M&Eย goals and objectives, andย stays abreast ofย M&Eย trends and methods throughout the aquarium/zoo/museum industry to ensure that The Maritime Aquarium employs industry best practices in assessing effectiveness and impact.ย ย ย 

This is a full-time, exempt position scheduled Monday-Friday, 9 AM-5 PM, offering a salary range of $73k-$79k per year.

Major Responsibilitiesย ย 

Direction ofย Monitoring and Evaluatingย Activitiesย and Programsย 

  • Oversee theย monitoring andย evaluation ofย Maritime Aquarium activities andย programs, includingย as needed:ย exhibitsย and guest experience, education programs,ย accessibility programs,ย and conservation partnerships.ย 
  • Design methods to answerย monitoring andย evaluation questions based on the goals ofย individualย projects, departments, and theย institutionย as a whole.ย 
  • Developย survey,ย interview,ย observation, andย focusย group instruments to collect qualitative and quantitative data from a variety of audiences (e.g., aquarium visitors, schoolchildren, teachers, families, community members, partners).ย 
  • Analyze quantitative and qualitative data,ย applyย statistical methods and coding as applicable, judge validity and reliability of data, and generate high-quality data visualizations.ย 
  • Compile written reports that present findings toย internalย and external audiences, including interpreting results and providing actionable recommendations.ย 

Monitoring and Evaluationย of Strategic Plan Implementationย 

  • Partner with seniorย staffย toย develop, execute, andย monitorย comprehensive evaluation plans for strategic activities.ย ย 
  • Support department heads withย sourcing and analyzingย data needed to inform strategic decision-making, process development, process outputs, and progress towards KPI achievement.ย 
  • Help departments and teams develop KPIs and monitor progress against them.ย 
  • Participate in developing annual budgets to ensure KPIs are adequately reflected and supported by budgeted activities.ย 
  • Develop strategies,ย methodsย and metrics to assessย the impactย of key strategic plan priorities.ย 

Collaboration and Leadershipย 

  • Provide leadership in development of strategic priorities forย Monitoring andย Evaluation.ย 
  • Help team members to appreciate the role of evaluation and monitoring and to createย Monitoring andย Evaluation plansย tailored toย particular units, such as Education, Exhibits, and Guest Experience.ย 
  • Collaborate with TMA staff inย the creationย of evaluation plans for grant proposals and in evaluation/monitoring aspects of grant reports.ย 
  • Oversee and provideย directionย to Manager ofย Monitoring andย Evaluation andย data collectors.ย 

Capacity Buildingย 

  • Provide training to TMA staff to increase internal capacity building and monitoring.ย 
  • Hold workshopsย onย relevant topics, such as survey creation, dataย collection,ย and data analysis.ย 

Research Dissemination and Professional Practiceย 

  • Share research andย evaluation ofย findings through internal communications, reports to funders, journal articles, and presentations at regional and national meetings and conferences.ย 
  • Remain currentย with trends and best practices of research and evaluation in formal and informal learning environments through literature, professional development, and networking with other professionals.ย 

Job Qualificationsย 

  • Bachelor's degreeย required; advanced degree in relevant fieldย preferred.ย 
  • Five years of experienceย demonstratingย progressive growth in skills andย management responsibility, with priorย experienceย inย managing staffย preferred.ย 
  • Experience with qualitative and quantitative social science research methods.Advanced degree in a related field that includes training in these methods."ย 
  • Five years of experienceย in relatedย experience conducting monitoring and evaluation, such as:ย data collection and analysisย (interviewing, workshops, surveys);ย qualitative andย quantitative social science research methods;ย use of data analysisย platforms/software such as R, Python,ย JMP, SPSS, STATA,ย etc;ย reportingย and presentation of results.ย ย 
  • Exceptional leadership skills andย demonstratedย ability to collaborate and foster teamwork within and across teams, and across multiple disciplines.ย 
  • Exceptionalย written andย verbalย communicationย skills.ย 
  • Experienceย creating evaluation plans for grant proposals.ย 
  • Strong organizationalย skills, and attention to detail.ย 
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.ย
