What is a senior QA software tester?

Senior QA Software Testers are experienced professionals responsible for ensuring the quality and functionality of software applications. They design, implement, and oversee testing processes to identify bugs and ensure products meet requirements and standards. In addition to executing tests, they often mentor junior testers, collaborate with developers, and contribute to test automation strategies. Their expertise is crucial for delivering reliable and user-friendly software. Senior QA Software Testers play a key role in improving overall software development efficiency and product quality.

How does a senior QA software tester typically collaborate with developers and other team members during the software development lifecycle?

As a Senior QA Software Tester, you will work closely with developers, product managers, and other QA team members to ensure software quality throughout the development process. This often involves participating in requirement reviews, designing and executing test plans, and providing feedback on potential issues early on. You may also lead defect triage meetings, advocate for best testing practices, and help mentor junior testers. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as you'll regularly coordinate with cross-functional teams to resolve defects and improve product quality.

  • Own the automation strategy and framework architecture for UI, API, and services testing to increase automation coverage and reduce manual testing efforts.

Job description

We are a leading national consumer finance company with a strong legacy of stability and performance. Following our recent acquisition and the appointment of a new CEO, we are entering an exciting period of transformation, shifting toward a high-growth, tech-forward, and entrepreneurial future.

We are seeking a Sr. QA/SDET Manager to lead our quality engineering organization, owning test strategy across manual testing, automation, and application security testing while managing a globally distributed team across onsite, offshore, and nearshore locations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Builds, leads, and mentors a QA/SDET organization spanning onsite, offshore, and nearshore team members and third-party vendor/partner resources.
  • Defines and evolves the quality engineering strategy, test methodology, and QA maturity roadmap.
  • Establishes test planning, entry/exit criteria, defect management, and release-readiness (go/no-go) processes.
  • Owns the automation strategy and framework architecture across UI, API, and services layers, increasing automated regression coverage and reducing manual test effort.
  • Oversees functional, regression, exploratory, UAT, and end-to-end manual testing across web, mobile, and backend/API systems.
  • Owns or coordinates application security testing activities, including SAST, DAST, software composition analysis (SCA), and periodic penetration testing, in partnership with InfoSec.
  • Drives quality metrics and reporting - test coverage, defect density/escape rate, automation ROI, and MTTR - for engineering and business leadership.
  • Manages performance, career development, hiring, and staffing plans for direct reports and matrixed offshore/nearshore resources.
  • Partners with Engineering, Product, DevOps, and InfoSec to align on release schedules, quality gates, and risk-acceptance decisions.
Who You Are
  • The Global Team Leader: Builds trust and accountability across onsite, offshore, and nearshore teams, ensuring seamless follow-the-sun coverage and consistent quality outcomes.
  • The Technical Expert: Maintains hands‑on fluency in test automation frameworks and architecture, guiding SDETs and evaluating the right tools for the job.
  • The Strategic Quality Partner: Translates business risk and release goals into clear test standards, metrics, and go/no-go criteria.
  • The Cross-Functional Collaborator: Partners effectively with Engineering, Product, DevOps, and InfoSec to embed quality and security throughout the SDLC.
Qualifications
  • 8+ years of experience in software quality assurance/engineering, including both manual testing and test automation, with 5+ years directly managing QA/SDET teams.
  • Experience managing globally distributed teams across onsite, offshore, and nearshore models, including matrixed and third‑party vendor/outsourced resources.
  • Experience in financial services, lending, or fintech environments preferred, with familiarity with relevant regulatory and compliance considerations.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • QA/testing certifications such as ISTQB (Foundation/Advanced) or Certified Agile Tester are a plus.
  • Hands‑on experience designing and building test automation frameworks (e.g., Selenium, Cypress, Playwright, Appium, RestAssured, or similar) for web, API, and/or mobile testing.
  • Strong understanding of QA methodologies, Agile/Scrum SDLC practices, and CI/CD pipelines (e.g., Jenkins, GitLab CI, Azure DevOps).
  • Experience with test management and defect tracking tools (e.g., JIRA, Zephyr, TestRail, qTest, Azure Test Plans).
  • Experience with performance/load testing tools (e.g., JMeter, k6, Gatling).
  • Proven experience managing vendor/outsourcing relationships for offshore/nearshore QA delivery.
  • Excellent communication, stakeholder management, and cross‑time‑zone collaboration skills.
Location & Work Schedule
  • Location: This role is based in our Tempe, AZ office and leads a globally distributed QA/SDET team across onsite, offshore, and nearshore locations. We are open to considering candidates located near Coppell, TX and Chadds Ford, PA.
  • Schedule: Standard business hours with flexibility required to coordinate across global time zones and support release schedules as business needs dictate.
