What does a Senior QA Associate do?

A Senior QA (Quality Assurance) Associate is responsible for overseeing and executing quality control processes to ensure that products or services meet established standards and regulatory requirements. They design and implement test plans, conduct inspections, analyze data, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify and resolve quality issues. Additionally, Senior QA Associates often mentor junior team members and help improve overall quality systems and procedures within an organization.

What are some typical challenges faced by Senior QA Associates when managing multiple testing projects simultaneously?

Senior QA Associates often juggle several testing projects at once, which requires excellent organizational and prioritization skills. Common challenges include balancing tight deadlines, ensuring thorough test coverage, and coordinating with cross-functional teams such as development, product management, and regulatory affairs. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you identify issues and collaborate across teams. These competencies are crucial to ensure product quality, regulatory adherence, and continuous process improvement in highly regulated environments.

Job description

Turion Space is seeking a Senior Quality Assurance Engineer to join our growing team in Irvine, CA. You'll be joining our Quality organization at a foundational moment, helping define how we do quality, not just operating within a system that's already set in stone. Working closely with our Senior Manager of Quality & Mission Assurance, you'll help build out inspection processes, calibration systems, and QMS procedures as we scale, while also owning the day-to-day quality operations that keep us compliant and running today.

This is a high-impact, high-autonomy role for someone who thrives on solving problems at the source, not just documenting them. You'll have real influence over how our processes, tooling, and documentation take shape as the team grows. It's a great fit for an engineer who can move fluidly between the shop floor and the conference room, someone who can read a CMM report and interpret GD&T callouts in the morning, then negotiate a disposition path with a customer or supplier in the afternoon.

Key Responsibilities

Building & Maturing the Quality Function

  • Help build and continuously improve QMS procedures, inspection processes, and quality infrastructure as our processes and product lines mature

  • Monitor quality systems and perform trend analysis to proactively identify systemic issues and design lasting process improvements

NCR / RCCA

  • Work open Nonconformance Reports (NCRs) end-to-end: containment, root cause investigation, disposition, and closure

  • Research applicable industry specs and technical data to support disposition decisions, and provide resolution guidance to engineering, operations, and program stakeholders

Inspection & Calibration

  • Develop and maintain inspection plans, including reviewing GD&T and CMM inspection reports as part of NCR investigations

  • Establish and monitor the calibration system to ensure measurement equipment remains compliant and audit-ready

Contracts & Suppliers

  • Perform contract review to ensure quality requirements flow correctly from customer to supplier

  • Monitor supplier quality performance

Compliance & Continuous Improvement

  • Keep the company compliant to applicable aerospace quality standards (e.g., AS9100) and customer contractual requirements; support internal and customer audits as needed

Minimum Qualifications

  • B.S. degree (Engineering, STEM, or related technical field)

  • 7+ years of Quality Engineering experience in aerospace/defense manufacturing

  • Comfortable working across mechanical, composite, and electrical product lines (software experience a plus)

  • Strong working knowledge of GD&T, including the ability to read and interpret CMM inspection reports

  • Demonstrated experience with NCR/CAR processes and root cause corrective action methodology

  • Experience with inspection process development and calibration systems

  • Experience with contract review and flow-down of quality requirements

  • Proficient with Microsoft 365 and office tools

  • Eligible to obtain a U.S. Security Clearance

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience building or standing up quality processes at a growing company, not just operating within a mature system

  • Experience with ERP/MRP systems (NetSuite/ION) and PLM tools (Arena), plus Jira and Confluence

  • Prior audit experience (internal or customer/regulatory)

  • Familiarity with supplier quality monitoring and management

Senior Quality Assurance Engineer Salary Range: $120,000 - $160,000

Employees may be asked to support alternate shifts, extended shifts, and/or travel during peak work periods.
ITAR Requirements:

This position may include access to technology and/or software source code that is subject to U.S. export controls. To conform to U.S. Government export regulations, applicant must be a (i) U.S. citizen or national, (ii) U.S. lawful, permanent resident (aka green card holder), (iii) Refugee under 8 U.S.C. § 1157, or (iv) Asylee under 8 U.S.C. § 1158, or be eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
Benefits:
We offer a comprehensive compensation and benefits package designed to support the well-being and professional growth of our employees. In addition to a competitive base salary and company stock, determined by factors such as job-related knowledge, education, skills, experience, and market demand, full-time employees are eligible for:

  • Equity: Receive equity in Turion Space, letting you benefit from the company's success

  • Health Insurance: Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage for employees and their dependents.

  • Retirement Plans: Access to a 401(k) plan with a 3% Employer Direct Contribution to help you plan for your future.

  • Paid Time Off: Generous vacation days, personal days, sick days, and holidays to ensure you have time to recharge.

  • Parental Leave: Paid parental leave following the birth of a newborn or adoption.

  • Emotional Wellbeing: A no-cost Employee Assistance Program (EAP) to support you and your household’s emotional health and wellbeing.

  • Professional Development: Opportunities for ongoing internal training, workshops, and courses to advance your skills and career growth.

  • Team Building Activities: Regular social events, team outings, and company-sponsored activities to foster a positive work environment.

We are dedicated to providing a supportive and enriching environment for our team members, recognizing that our collective success is built upon the well-being and satisfaction of each individual.
