Wunderlich-Malec has a Sr. Project Engineer position available in our St. Louis, MO office. This person will provide project management and hardware engineering leadership in delivering automation and packaging systems for a wide variety of industries.

This position requires demonstrated technical proficiency in implementing mechanical material and product handling solutions. The Project Engineer will interact directly with the customer and lead a team of Wunderlich-Malec engineers in identifying requirements, developing specifications, and shepherding packaging and material handling solutions through the production process. This position is a leadership role within the business unit and requires strong problem-solving ability, well-balanced people skills, an aptitude for business efficiency, and an interest in creating partnerships. The Sr. Project Engineer demonstrates success by securing repeat work with both new and existing customers.

Major Responsibilities
  • This position requires the ability to deliver innovative solutions and design standards either self-directed or as a leader of a team. The candidate must have the ability to conceptualize, detail and implement conveyor and packaging systems for industrial processes and machinery that meet our customers’ requirements. This involves the development of a full system layout, selecting the components to be used, detailing process flow diagrams and system documentation, and functional knowledge of packaging systems
  • This position requires in-depth knowledge of AutoCAD, 3D development software and a vast system knowledge of packaging and material handling systems components
  • The ideal candidate must have a diverse engineering skillset with the ability to work independently. Will act as technical lead on projects and guide lower-level engineers and technicians
  • This position also requires performing the Project management role on some projects, instead of hardware engineering or in addition to. This will involve:
    • Developing project execution plans, work breakdown structures and associated budgets
    • Task prioritization and scheduling, task ordering, time tracking and reporting
    • Financial tracking and reporting, early problem identification
    • Conflict management/resolution, leading and supporting a team, and attending project status meetings
  • Overseeing daily operations and activities of projects up to $1.5M
  • This position is often responsible for ensuring the overall profitability of the project
Education

Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical systems or Associates Degree with relevant hands‑on experience.

Experience

Greater than 10 years with capabilities in below areas is preferred:

  • Extensive experience in design of mechanical conveyor systems, material handling systems and complex manufacturing solutions for the food/beverage/HPC/chemicals field
  • Background understanding of relevant safety systems and safety controls for all equipment center types
  • Experience working with Mechanical installers, electrical installers and all trade skills
  • Ability to design full turn‑key solutions for our clients based on specific client needs
  • In-depth understanding of conveyor systems and types of material handling solutions
  • Experience in industries such as Food, Beverage, Advanced Manufacturing, Automotive and Health and Personal Care products
  • Experience leading a team of engineers/technicians to material handling solutions
  • Experience mentoring less experienced engineers
  • Professional references, preferably one from each of the following: a subordinate, a peer, and a manager
  • Ability to travel up to 30% – 50%
