Job description

The Opportunity
Roehl Transport is seeking a Senior Data Engineer to help design and deliver modern data solutions that support decision-making across the enterprise. As part of a small, highly trusted data and analytics team, you will build reliable data assets, modernize data platforms, and enable business teams with timely, meaningful information.
This hands-on senior individual contributor role focuses on SQL development, stored procedure design, data modeling, cloud data engineering, and data integration. You will partner closely with teams across Business Intelligence, Data Management, Application Development, Infrastructure, and the business to transform data into trusted information assets that improve business performance, driver success, operational efficiency, and decision-making.
Roehl is a data-rich environment, with operational, customer, driver, logistics, and communications systems generating valuable data every day. The right candidate will bring strong technical judgment, ownership, curiosity, and a desire to help advance Roehl's modern data strategy through SQL Stored Procedures, Microsoft Fabric, Python-enabled engineering, Power BI, and practical AI-assisted ways of working.
What You'll Do
You will help design, build, and mature Roehl's enterprise data ecosystem through scalable, reliable data solutions that support analytics, reporting, and emerging AI use cases. Key responsibilities include:
  • Design, develop, optimize, and support SQL-based data solutions, with a strong emphasis on T-SQL, stored procedures, views, functions, and performance-aware query design.
  • Create and maintain relational and dimensional data models, including ERDs and well-structured operational models.
  • Build and support data pipelines, integrations, and transformation processes across operational systems, reporting platforms, and cloud data environments.
  • Partner with BI Developers, Data Analysts, Data Owners, Application Developers, and business stakeholders to understand requirements and deliver practical, high-value data solutions.
  • Support Roehl's Microsoft Fabric strategy and develop data assets that power Power BI, enterprise reporting, advanced analytics, and future AI-driven use cases.
  • Use Python and AI-enabled tools where appropriate to improve automation, integration, analysis, and engineering productivity.
  • Apply secure data handling, governance, metadata, and development best practices.
  • Provide senior-level technical leadership through design input, code quality, standards, mentoring, and collaboration.

How We Work
At Roehl, our values are Safety, Driver Driven, Do the Right Thing, Innovation, Delivering Success, and Unity in Diversity. We act with purpose, build on strong foundations, value good partnerships, and take pride in doing things the right way.
We value technical depth, ownership, accountability, collaboration, and a commitment to solving meaningful business problems through better data.
The Experience
This is a senior-level opportunity. The ideal candidate will have:
  • Expert-level SQL skills, including advanced T-SQL development.
  • Strong experience designing and optimizing stored procedures, complex queries, views, functions, and SQL-based transformation logic.
  • Strong understanding of relational modeling, ERDs, normalization principles, third normal form design, dimensional modeling, metadata practices, and data governance concepts.
  • Multiple years of experience building and maintaining data warehousing, data integration, or analytical data solutions.
  • Experience developing within a modern Microsoft-centric data stack, including SQL Server, Python, cloud technologies, and modern data platforms.
  • Experience with Docker, Kubernetes or other containerized deployment frameworks
  • Experience with Apache Airflow
  • Experience with Microsoft Fabric, Azure SQL, OneLake, Lakehouse concepts, or similar cloud data technologies.
  • Experience supporting Power BI or other modern analytics and visualization platforms.
  • Understanding of secure data handling, Agile development, source control, deployment practices, and tools such as Azure DevOps or GitHub.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to partner effectively with both technical and business teams.

Preferred and Plus Skills
The following experience is preferred or considered a plus:
  • Microsoft Fabric experience or strong interest in developing Fabric expertise.
  • Experience with Azure data pipelines, cloud data lake implementations, Lakehouse architecture, or modern ELT patterns.
  • Experience using AI-assisted development, AI-enabled analytics, or practical AI tools to improve engineering productivity.
  • Experience with C#, Power BI semantic models, dataflows, data quality, lineage, cataloging, governance, Visio, ERDs, and architecture diagrams.
  • Experience in transportation, logistics, operations, or similarly data-rich environments.

The Fit
You may be a strong fit if you enjoy solving complex data problems, building reliable and maintainable solutions, collaborating across technical and business teams, and taking ownership from design through delivery. You are curious about modern data platforms, cloud technologies, and practical ways AI can improve how teams work.
