What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior Principal RF Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Principal RF Engineer, you need deep expertise in RF circuit design, electromagnetic theory, wireless communications, and typically an advanced degree in electrical engineering. Proficiency with RF simulation tools like ADS or HFSS, network analyzers, and industry certifications such as IEEE or FCC compliance are commonly required. Excellent problem-solving, leadership, and communication skills help in guiding teams and collaborating with cross-functional stakeholders. These skills ensure the reliable design and implementation of complex RF systems essential for cutting-edge telecommunications and electronics projects.

What is the difference between Senior Principal Rf Engineer vs RF Systems Engineer?

AspectSenior Principal Rf EngineerRF Systems Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires advanced degrees (BSc, MSc, PhD) in Electrical Engineering or related fields, with extensive RF certificationsUsually holds a bachelor's or master's degree in Electrical Engineering, with some RF certifications
Work EnvironmentFocuses on high-level RF design, system architecture, and leadership in R&D teamsInvolves RF system integration, testing, and troubleshooting within product development teams
Industry UsageCommonly found in telecommunications, aerospace, and defense industriesUsed across wireless communications, consumer electronics, and network infrastructure sectors

The Senior Principal Rf Engineer typically holds more advanced credentials and leads complex RF projects, focusing on system-level design and strategic development. In contrast, RF Systems Engineers often work on implementing and testing RF systems within project teams. Both roles are essential in RF engineering but differ mainly in seniority, scope, and responsibilities.

What are Senior Principal RF Engineers?

Senior Principal RF Engineers are highly experienced professionals who lead the design, development, and optimization of radio frequency (RF) systems and components. They play a critical role in projects involving wireless communications, radar, satellite, and other RF applications by providing technical guidance, setting design standards, and solving complex engineering challenges. These engineers typically oversee teams, mentor junior engineers, and collaborate with other departments to ensure successful project delivery. Their expertise helps organizations achieve high performance and reliability in RF systems.

How does a Senior Principal RF Engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during the development of new wireless products?

A Senior Principal RF Engineer frequently works alongside hardware designers, software engineers, and product managers to ensure that wireless products meet performance specifications and regulatory requirements. Collaboration often involves participating in design reviews, troubleshooting complex RF issues, and guiding teams through the integration of RF subsystems. Effective communication and leadership skills are essential, as the role often requires translating technical RF concepts for non-specialist stakeholders and mentoring junior engineers. This team-oriented environment helps drive innovation and ensures that the end product is robust and reliable.

Job description

Senior Field Service Engineer

Cheyenne, Wyoming

Must be a U.S. citizen able to obtain and maintain a Secret Clearance (current active or interim Secret Clearance preferred).

@Orchard LLC is supporting a leader in secure communications systems for the most challenging environments. Our client (SEMPRE) believes that life depends on communication. They are a team of engineers and entrepreneurs dedicated to one mission: protecting, connecting, and securing communication so life runs uninterruptedโ€”even on our nation's "worst day." SEMPRE provides the worldโ€™s first EMP-hardened, 5G-enabled, edge micro-data centers. Our technology bridges the gap between commercial innovation and military-grade survivability, ensuring that military units, first responders, and critical infrastructure operators have access to secure, resilient, and autonomous digital infrastructure. When traditional networks fail due to kinetic attack, cyber warfare, or natural disaster, SEMPRE stands.

As a Senior Field Service Engineer (FSE), you are the technical vanguard of SEMPREโ€™s mission. You wonโ€™t just be maintaining equipment; you will be ensuring tactical superiority and operational readiness in high-stakes environments. You will provide on-site technical support, system integration, and operational assistance for a sophisticated ecosystem of Counter-Unmanned Aircraft Systems (C-UAS) sensors and communications platforms. This role requires someone comfortable navigating RF spectrums, EO/IR imaging systems, and complex IP networking, all while serving as the primary bridge between SEMPREโ€™s engineering teams and the warfighters on the ground.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Operational Readiness: Provide expert field-level installation, configuration, and maintenance for C-UAS communications and sensor systems.
  • Multi-Vendor Integration: Support the seamless integration of high-tier platforms, including Dedrone detection systems, Teledyne & FLIR EO/IR imaging, and the AeroVironment Titan C-UAS System.
  • Technical Troubleshooting: Diagnose and resolve hardware, software, and RF communication issues. You will manage the intersection of Linux/Windows environments, IP networking, and hardened field hardware.
  • Sustainment: Conduct preventive maintenance, system health checks, and critical firmware/software updates to ensure 100% mission uptime.
  • Strategic Deployment: Assist with site surveys and communications architecture to optimize sensor coverage and minimize "digital exhaust" in contested environments.
  • Training & Mentorship: Act as a subject matter expert, training operators and customer personnel on system safety, operation, and field-level troubleshooting.
  • Liaison: Coordinate directly with SEMPRE engineering and OEM vendors to escalate complex issues and influence future product hardening.

Your background will include.

  • Citizenship: U.S. Citizenship and the ability to obtain/maintain a Secret Security Clearance.
  • Domain Knowledge: Must have prior active-duty experience supporting Global Strike Command (AFGSC), including experience supporting nuclear capabilities.
  • Technical Experience: 3+ years supporting C-UAS, ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance), RF, or defense communications systems.
  • Field Expertise: Proven ability to troubleshoot IP networking, RF spectrum monitoring, and sensor fusion architectures in austere or military environments.
  • Systems Knowledge: Familiarity with EO/IR imaging, radar systems, and Command-and-Control (C2) software.
  • Adaptability: Comfortable working in dynamic, field-deployed settings supporting government and military customers.
  • Communication: Strong technical documentation skills and the ability to translate complex technical concepts for non-technical operators.

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • OEM Familiarity: Prior experience with systems from Dedrone, Teledyne Technologies, FLIR Systems, or AeroVironment.
  • Military Background: Direct experience in Air Defense, Signals (25 series), ISR, or Electronic Warfare (17/29 series).
  • Security Architecture: Understanding of Zero Trust principles and how they apply to tactical edge computing.
  • Active Clearance: Currently holding an active U.S. Secret clearance.

About SEMPRE

  • Mission-First Culture: Work for a company where "Integrity, Service, and Innovation" aren't just posters on a wallโ€”they are our operating model.
  • Cutting-Edge Tech: Get hands-on with the only EMP-hardened 5G infrastructure in the world.
  • Impact: Your work directly protects American lives and ensures our nation's critical infrastructure remains resilient against any threat.

Compensation:ย The salary for this role is based on experience, qualifications, and location, and is designed to be market-competitive for highly motivated individuals ready to work and grow. The anticipated salary range is between $95K & $120K plus bonus. SEMPRE offers a very competitive benefits package and values internal growth and promotion.

Note: This role requires travel to remote field sites and the ability to work outdoors or in rugged environments as mission requirements dictate. You must be able to lift and carry items weighing up to 50lbs on a routine basis.ย
